How to sign up unemployment benefits with Washington ESD - need step by step help
Just got laid off yesterday and I'm completely lost on how to sign up unemployment with Washington ESD. I've never had to file for benefits before and honestly have no idea where to even start. Do I need to create an account somewhere? What documents do I need? How long does it take to get approved? I'm really stressed about making rent next month so any guidance would be super helpful.

First thing you need to do is go to esd.wa.gov and create an account through SecureAccess Washington (SAW). You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. Don't wait - file as soon as possible because there's a waiting week.

•Thank you! Do I need to have my W-2 forms or just the basic employment info?

Freya Thomsen
•Just the basic info is fine for the initial application. Washington ESD will verify your wages with employers directly. Keep your W-2s handy in case they ask for additional documentation later.

The whole process is pretty straightforward once you get started. Make sure you file your initial claim within the first week after your last day of work. You'll answer questions about why you're unemployed and your work history. After that you have to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits.

•What happens if I mess up something on the application? Can I go back and fix it?

•You can make some corrections online but for major changes you might need to call Washington ESD. Just be as accurate as possible the first time.

If you run into issues getting through to Washington ESD by phone, I recently discovered Claimyr.com which helps you actually reach a live agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made a huge difference when I needed to resolve an issue with my claim status.

•Is that some kind of paid service? I'm already broke and can't afford extra fees right now.

•It's worth checking out their site for the details. For me it was way better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected constantly.

Don't forget you'll need to do job search activities once you start receiving benefits. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you have to log them. This includes applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking, etc.

•Wait, I have to start looking for work immediately? I thought I'd have some time to figure things out.

•You don't have to start the job search requirement until after your waiting week, but it's good to get a head start. Keep track of everything you do in WorkSourceWA.

•Same here! I kept getting lost in all the different pages and links.

•Look for the 'Apply for Benefits' button on the main page. It should take you right to the SecureAccess Washington login.

Pro tip: when you create your SAW account, write down your username and password somewhere safe. I forgot mine and it was a nightmare trying to recover it. Also make sure you have a good phone number because they'll send verification codes.

•Good advice! I'll make sure to save everything in a secure place.

How long does it usually take to get approved? I'm really worried about paying my bills.

•If everything goes smoothly, you could see your first payment in 2-3 weeks. But if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason, it can take much longer.

•What causes adjudication? I'm scared I'll mess something up.

•Adjudication happens when there are questions about your eligibility - like if you quit vs were laid off, or if there are discrepancies in your employment dates. Just be honest and accurate on your application.

Also make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your maximum benefit amount. Your weekly amount is what you get each week, but there's a total cap on how much you can receive during your benefit year.

•How do they calculate how much I'll get per week?

Omar Zaki
•It's based on your wages during your base period, which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed. Washington ESD has a calculator on their website.

Make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week, even if you haven't heard back about your initial claim yet. Missing a weekly claim can cause problems with your benefits.

•When are weekly claims due?

•You can file them starting Sunday for the previous week. I always do mine Sunday morning so I don't forget.

The system crashed on me twice while I was trying to complete my application. Super frustrating but I just kept trying and eventually got through.

Ravi Sharma
•Oh no, did you lose all your information when it crashed?

Luca Esposito
•Some of it yeah. I learned to save frequently as I went through each section after that.

If you worked in multiple states recently, make sure you apply in the state where you worked the most or earned the most wages. For Washington residents that's usually Washington ESD but not always.

•I only worked in Washington so I should be good there.

been unemployed for 2 months now and still waiting for my first payment, this whole system is broken

•Have you tried calling them? I had luck using Claimyr to get through when my claim was stuck. Sometimes they need additional information and don't tell you clearly.

•I've called like 50 times and either get disconnected or they say they can't help me over the phone

One thing that helped me was reading through all the FAQ sections on the Washington ESD website before calling. That way I understood the terminology and could ask more specific questions when I finally got through to someone.

•That's a good idea. I'll spend some time reading through everything first.

Don't panic if your claim status shows 'pending' for a while. Mine said pending for almost 2 weeks before it got approved. As long as you keep filing your weekly claims you should be fine.

Ravi Sharma
•That's reassuring, thank you. I was worried that pending meant something was wrong.

Make sure you have direct deposit set up so you don't have to wait for a debit card or check in the mail. It's much faster.

Ravi Sharma
•Can I set that up during the initial application or do I have to wait?

Aisha Abdullah
•You can set it up right away. Just have your bank routing and account numbers ready.

If you're getting anxiety about the whole process (I sure did), just take it one step at a time. File the initial claim first, then worry about the weekly claims after that. Don't try to figure everything out at once.

•Thank you, I needed to hear that. It does feel overwhelming trying to understand everything at once.

One last tip - keep copies of everything. Screenshot your confirmation numbers, save emails from Washington ESD, and keep records of all your job search activities. Documentation is your friend if any issues come up later.

•Great advice! I'll start a folder right now to keep everything organized.

Good luck with your claim! The first time is always scary but once you get through the initial setup it gets easier. Most people don't have major problems if they're eligible and file everything correctly.

Just wanted to add that if you have issues reaching Washington ESD customer service, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it saved me hours of calling.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind if I run into problems. Hopefully I won't need it!

The whole process took me about 30 minutes to complete the initial application once I had all my information gathered. The hardest part was just getting started and knowing what I needed.

•That doesn't sound too bad! I was expecting it to take hours.
