How do I register for unemployment in Washington - complete beginner needs help
I just got laid off from my job last week and I have no idea how to register for unemployment benefits. I've never filed for unemployment before and I'm completely lost. I know I need to go through Washington ESD but I don't even know where to start. Do I need to create an account somewhere? What information do I need to have ready? I'm really stressed about this whole process and could use some guidance on the basic steps to get started.

First thing you need to do is go to the Washington ESD website and create an account. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license or state ID, and employment information for the last 18 months. The process is pretty straightforward once you get started.

•Thank you! Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after being laid off or can I apply right away?

Leeann Blackstein
•You can apply right away. Actually, you should apply as soon as possible because there's a waiting period before benefits start.

The website is esd.wa.gov and you'll want to look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. Make sure you have your employer information ready including dates of employment and reason for separation.

•What if I don't remember exact dates? I worked there for like 3 years but can't remember the exact start date.

•Get as close as you can. You can also check old pay stubs or tax documents if you have them.

I went through this process last year and it was actually easier than I expected. The online application walks you through everything step by step. Just make sure you answer all the questions accurately about why you're unemployed.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved? I'm worried about the waiting time.

•Mine took about 2 weeks but I had a pretty straightforward case. If there are any issues it can take longer.

One thing nobody mentions is that you might have trouble getting through to Washington ESD if you need help. I spent hours on hold trying to get answers. If you run into issues, there's actually a service called Claimyr that helps people get through to ESD agents faster. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? I'm hesitant to use third-party services for government stuff.

•Yeah it's legitimate. They just help you get through the phone queue faster. I used it when my claim got stuck and it saved me hours of waiting.

•I used Claimyr too when I had questions about my job search requirements. Way better than sitting on hold forever.

DON'T WAIT TO APPLY! I made the mistake of waiting a week thinking I might get called back to work and it just delayed everything. Apply immediately even if you think you might get your job back.

•Good point. I was actually thinking about waiting to see if they call me back but sounds like that's a bad idea.

Leeann Blackstein
•Exactly right. You can always stop claiming if you get called back, but you can't get back that week you waited to apply.

Make sure you have your bank account information ready if you want direct deposit. It's way faster than waiting for a check in the mail.

Liv Park
•Do they still do the debit card thing or is direct deposit the only option now?

Theodore Nelson
•They still do both. I think direct deposit is just faster and more convenient.

also make sure you save all your paperwork from your employer about the layoff. they might ask for it later during the process

•What kind of paperwork specifically? I got a separation notice but that's about it.

Raúl Mora
•that separation notice is exactly what you need. keep any emails or documents about the layoff too

One more thing - once you apply, you'll need to file weekly claims to keep getting benefits. Don't forget to do this every week or you'll miss payments. The system will remind you but it's your responsibility to stay on top of it.

•How does the weekly claim thing work? Do I have to report if I looked for jobs?
0 coins
Leeann Blackstein
•Yes, you'll need to report your job search activities. Keep track of where you apply and when. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week.

•Actually I think it's changed recently. Better to check the current requirements on their website.

The whole system is a mess tbh. I filed in January and still had issues with my claim getting held up in adjudication for weeks. But you gotta do what you gotta do.

Liv Park
•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

Evelyn Kim
•It's when they have to review your case for some reason. Usually takes longer than they say it will.

Carmella Fromis
•Most claims don't go to adjudication. Don't worry about it unless it happens to you.

Quick tip: if you're having trouble with the website, try different browsers or clear your cache. The ESD site can be glitchy sometimes.

•Good to know. I'll probably try it on my laptop instead of my phone to be safe.

When I registered last year, the hardest part was remembering all my previous employers. Make sure you have a list ready with addresses and phone numbers going back 18 months.

Liv Park
•18 months? I've only had this one job for the past 3 years. Do I still need to go back 18 months?
0 coins
Ellie Simpson
•If you've only had one job then that's all you need to report. The 18 months is just in case you had multiple jobs.

I remember being confused about the waiting week thing. Just to clarify for others reading this - there's no waiting week anymore in Washington. You can get benefits for your first week of unemployment if you're eligible.

•That's right, they eliminated the waiting week a few years ago. Good catch.

One thing that helped me was watching some YouTube videos about the Washington ESD application process before I started. There are some good walkthroughs that show you exactly what screens you'll see.

•That's a great idea! I learn better when I can see what I'm supposed to do.

Just finished helping my sister apply last month. The whole process took about 30 minutes online. Not as bad as we thought it would be.

Liv Park
•That's reassuring. I was expecting it to take hours.

•The application itself is pretty quick. It's the waiting for approval that takes time.

If you run into any problems or have questions after you apply, don't be afraid to call. I know everyone complains about the phone lines but I actually got through after about 45 minutes and the person was really helpful.

•45 minutes isn't too bad. I was expecting to wait for hours based on what I've heard.

•Times vary a lot. I've waited 2+ hours before. That's when I started using Claimyr to skip the wait.

Make sure you keep your confirmation number from when you submit your application. You'll need it if you have to call about your claim.

•Should I screenshot it or write it down?

Olivia Garcia
•Both! I always screenshot and then write it down somewhere safe.

The job search requirements can be confusing at first but they're not too bad once you get used to them. You basically need to apply for jobs, attend job fairs, or do other approved activities.

•Do I need to start looking for jobs right away or can I wait until my claim is approved?

Noah Lee
•You should start looking right away. The requirements kick in immediately when you start claiming benefits.

Good luck with your application! The process isn't as scary as it seems. Just take it one step at a time and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.

One last thing - make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week. I think you have until Saturday night each week but don't wait until the last minute in case the website is down.

Liv Park
•Good point. I'll set a reminder on my phone so I don't forget.

Isabella Martin
•Smart idea. Missing a weekly claim can cause delays in your payments.
