How can you file for unemployment - Washington ESD first time filing help needed
I just got laid off from my restaurant job yesterday and I have no idea how to start the unemployment process. I've never filed before and honestly feeling pretty overwhelmed. Can someone walk me through how you actually file for unemployment with Washington ESD? Do I need to go somewhere in person or can I do it online? What documents do I need to have ready?

You can file completely online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your SSN, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. The process takes about 30-45 minutes if you have everything ready.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic info about where I worked?

Everett Tutum
•Just the basic employment info is fine for filing. Washington ESD will verify everything with your employers directly.

Make sure you file as soon as possible! Your benefit year starts the week you file, not when you lost your job. I made that mistake and lost a week of benefits.

•Oh wow I didn't know that! I'll file today then. Does it matter what time of day?

Sunny Wang
•Nope, time doesn't matter. Just get it done ASAP.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone for questions, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com. They help you get connected to actual ESD agents without waiting on hold forever. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Might be helpful if you run into issues during the filing process.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at ESD.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked for me when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Much better than dialing for hours.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems. Hopefully the online filing goes smoothly though.

The online system is pretty straightforward but make sure you answer all the questions honestly. They ask about why you lost your job and if you were fired vs laid off makes a difference.

Aria Khan
•It was definitely a layoff - the restaurant is cutting staff due to slow business. Should be straightforward then.

•Perfect, layoffs are usually approved without issues as long as you meet the work history requirements.

ugh the washington esd website is SO SLOW sometimes. took me like 2 hours to file because it kept timing out. just be patient and dont give up if it crashes

Aria Khan
•Oh no, that sounds frustrating. Is there a better time to try filing?

•maybe try early morning or late evening when fewer people are online? idk the site just sucks sometimes

Once you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. This is separate from the initial application. You can file weekly claims online or by phone starting the Sunday after you file your initial claim.

•So I have to do something every single week? What happens if I forget?

Everett Tutum
•Yes, you must file weekly to get benefits. If you miss a week you can usually file it late but you might need to call ESD to explain why.

•I missed filing one week and it was a nightmare trying to get it fixed. Don't forget!

Also heads up - you'll need to register for WorkSource and start looking for work right away. Washington has job search requirements you have to meet each week.

Aria Khan
•How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?
0 coins
Sunny Wang
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week but check the requirements when you file. Could be applications, interviews, networking events, etc.

The whole system is a joke. I filed 3 weeks ago and my claim is still pending adjudication with no explanation. Good luck getting any real help from their customer service.

Aria Khan
•That's exactly what I'm worried about. What does adjudication mean?
0 coins
Everett Tutum
•Adjudication just means they're reviewing your claim to make sure you qualify. It can take a few weeks but most get approved eventually.

•If your claim does get stuck in adjudication like mine did, that's when Claimyr really helped me get through to someone who could explain what was happening.

Make sure you have your bank account info ready for direct deposit. Getting checks by mail takes forever.

•Good tip, thanks! Is there anything else I should set up ahead of time?

•Just make sure your address is current and you have a reliable email since they send important notices electronically.

i remember when i first filed i was so confused about the waiting week thing. washington doesnt have a waiting week anymore so you can get paid for your first week if approved

Aria Khan
•Oh that's good to know! So I could potentially get benefits for this week if I file today?
0 coins
Clarissa Flair
•yep as long as your claim gets approved. the waiting week thing was eliminated a few years ago

Restaurant workers usually qualify easily since you were probably laid off due to business reasons. Just be honest about everything and you should be fine.

Aria Khan
•That's reassuring. I've been working there for almost 2 years so hopefully that helps.

Caden Turner
•Yeah 2 years of work history should definitely meet the requirements. You'll be approved.

The hardest part is just getting started. Once you file the initial claim everything else is pretty routine - just filing those weekly claims and doing your job search.

•Thanks everyone for all the help! I'm going to file online right now.

Pro tip: screenshot everything during the filing process in case the system glitches. I had to refile once because my application disappeared.

Aria Khan
•Wow that would be so frustrating! Definitely will take screenshots.

•Better safe than sorry with their buggy system.

Don't stress too much about the process. Thousands of people file every week and most go through without problems. The horror stories you hear online are usually the exceptions.

•That's what I needed to hear. I was getting pretty anxious reading about all the potential issues.

•Most claims are straightforward, especially layoffs from established employers.

I filed last month and got approved in about 10 days. The key is having all your employment info accurate - they verify everything with your previous employers.
0 coins
Aria Khan
•10 days isn't too bad. Were you able to backdate to your first week unemployed?
0 coins
Harmony Love
•Yes, as long as you file within a reasonable time frame they'll backdate to when you actually became unemployed.

Make sure you understand the difference between your initial claim and weekly claims. The initial claim is what determines if you qualify and how much you'll get. Weekly claims are what you file each week to actually receive the money.
0 coins
Aria Khan
•So the initial claim is like the application and weekly claims are like checking in each week?
0 coins
Romeo Quest
•Exactly! Initial claim = application. Weekly claims = getting paid each week.

The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely terrible if you need help. I spent days trying to get through before someone told me about that Claimyr service. Saved me so much time and frustration.

Aria Khan
•I keep hearing about that service. Good to know it actually works.

Rudy Cenizo
•Yeah it's legit. Much better than listening to busy signals all day.

Whatever you do, don't wait! File today if possible. Every day you wait is potentially money lost.

UPDATE: Just finished filing online! It took about 40 minutes like someone mentioned. The website was slow but didn't crash. Now I just wait to hear back. Thanks everyone for pushing me to do it today instead of putting it off!
