How do you know if you got accepted for unemployment Washington ESD?

Filed my Washington ESD claim about 10 days ago and I'm starting to panic because I haven't heard anything definitive. My secure access washington account shows the claim was submitted but the status just says 'pending' with no other details. I've been filing my weekly claims like they told me to but I'm not sure if that means I'm approved or not. How long does it usually take to find out if your unemployment claim got accepted? What should I be looking for in my account to know for sure?

You'll get a monetary determination letter in the mail within 2-3 weeks that tells you your weekly benefit amount and how much you can collect total. That's your official approval. In your online account, look for the 'Claim Summary' section - it should show your benefit year dates and weekly amount once approved.

Thank you! I'll keep checking my mail then. The waiting is killing me.

0 coins

The online account updates faster than mail usually. Check every few days.

0 coins

Usually takes 7-10 business days for regular claims. If there are no issues with your application, you should see your weekly benefit amount appear in your account summary. Keep filing those weekly claims even while it's pending - that's important.

0 coins

Ok good, I've been doing the weekly claims. Was worried I was doing something wrong.

0 coins

Yeah definitely keep filing even if it says pending. I made that mistake once and had to backdate later.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check your status, I found this service called Claimyr that actually helps you get connected to agents. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

0 coins

Interesting, I'll check that out. The phone lines are impossible to get through on.

0 coins

Never heard of that but anything is better than sitting on hold for 3 hours.

0 coins

Look for these signs in your account: 1) Benefit year start/end dates appear 2) Weekly benefit amount shows up 3) You can see your claim balance. If you see all three, you're approved. If it says 'adjudication' anywhere, that means they need more info.

0 coins

I don't see adjudication anywhere, just pending. Hopefully that's good news.

0 coins

Pending is normal at this stage. Adjudication would be if they flagged something specific.

0 coins

What does adjudication even mean? I keep seeing that word but nobody explains it.

0 coins

Adjudication means they need to investigate something about your claim - like if you quit vs got laid off, or if there's a question about your work history. It can add weeks to the process unfortunately.

0 coins

Oh man that sounds scary. Hope that doesn't happen to me.

0 coins

Yeah I'm definitely not seeing that word anywhere in my account so fingers crossed.

0 coins

I was approved but it took like 3 weeks because of some issue with my employer not responding to them fast enough. The waiting is the worst part honestly. Just keep checking your account and filing weekly claims.

0 coins

3 weeks?? I'm already stressing at 10 days. How did you survive financially?

0 coins

Had to borrow from family. It sucks but once it's approved you get all the back pay for the weeks you filed.

0 coins

Same thing happened to me. Got all the back pay in one lump sum which was actually nice.

0 coins

The whole system is so confusing. They should just send you an email saying YES or NO instead of making you guess from cryptic status messages.

0 coins

Right? Like how hard is it to send a simple confirmation email.

0 coins

I keep refreshing my account like it's going to magically change.

0 coins

Pro tip: if you can log in and file weekly claims without error messages, that's usually a good sign. The system typically blocks you from filing if there's a major issue with your claim.

0 coins

That's reassuring! I've been able to file two weekly claims with no problems.

0 coins

This is true. When I had an issue last year it wouldn't let me file at all.

0 coins

Check your mail every day. Sometimes the online account doesn't update right away but you'll get the monetary determination letter in the mail first. That letter has all the details about your weekly amount and how long you can collect.

0 coins

I've been checking mail religiously. Nothing yet but I'll keep watching.

0 coins

The mail can be slow sometimes. Online usually updates first in my experience.

0 coins

Ugh the waiting game is brutal. I was so anxious when I first applied. But like everyone said, if you can file weekly claims and don't see any red flags, you're probably fine. The approval will come.

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement. The anxiety is real when you're waiting on money you need.

0 coins

I know that feeling. Bills don't wait for Washington ESD unfortunately.

0 coins

If you really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD to check your status, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it connected me to an agent in like 10 minutes instead of the usual 2-3 hour wait.

0 coins

How much does it cost though? I'm already broke waiting for unemployment.

0 coins

It's worth it if you really need answers. Way better than wasting hours on hold.

0 coins

I got my approval letter exactly 14 days after filing. It came in a plain white envelope so don't miss it. The letter will have your weekly benefit amount and the dates of your benefit year.

0 coins

Good to know about the envelope. I'll make sure to check everything carefully.

0 coins

Same here, got mine in 2 weeks. The letter is pretty straightforward when it comes.

0 coins

One thing to watch for - if your employer contests your claim, that can delay things. But most employers don't bother if you were legitimately laid off. Only if they think you quit or were fired for cause.

0 coins

I was laid off due to downsizing so hopefully my employer won't contest it.

0 coins

Layoffs are usually pretty straightforward. Shouldn't be any issues there.

0 coins

The key things to look for: 1) Can you file weekly claims without errors? 2) Do you see benefit year dates? 3) Is there a weekly benefit amount listed? If yes to all three, you're good. If it says adjudication anywhere, that means delay.

0 coins

I can file weekly claims fine and I think I see benefit year dates. Still waiting on the weekly amount to show up.

0 coins

The weekly amount usually appears last in my experience. Sounds like you're on track.

0 coins

Try not to stress too much. I know it's hard when you need the money but 10 days is still pretty normal. Most people get approved within 2-3 weeks unless there's an issue.

0 coins

Trying to stay positive. This thread has been really helpful honestly.

Mei Lin

Yeah this community is great for unemployment questions. We've all been there.

0 coins

Once you get approved, make sure you understand the job search requirements. You'll need to log your job search activities in WorkSourceWA. Don't wait until the last minute to figure that out.

0 coins

Good point. I should probably start looking into that now.

0 coins

Yeah the job search thing catches a lot of people off guard. Better to be prepared.

0 coins

The first payment usually takes the longest. After that, if you file your weekly claims on time, payments come pretty regularly. Usually within 2-3 days of filing.

0 coins

That's good to know. I was wondering about the payment timing too.

0 coins

Yeah the first one is slow but after that it's pretty consistent.

0 coins

Just wanted to add - if you used Claimyr or any service to get through to Washington ESD, they can actually tell you the exact status of your claim. The agents have more detailed info than what shows up online.

0 coins

That's good to know. Might be worth it for peace of mind.

0 coins

The agents definitely have more info. Sometimes worth the call just to know for sure.

0 coins

Hang in there OP. I remember that anxious feeling waiting for approval. But if you were legitimately laid off and filed everything correctly, you should be fine. The system just moves slowly.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the advice and encouragement. This has been really helpful.

0 coins

Hope you get your approval letter soon! Keep us posted.

0 coins

Good luck! The waiting is the hardest part but it'll work out.

0 coins

One last thing - when you do get approved, take a screenshot of your claim summary page. It's good to have for your records in case there are any issues later.

0 coins

Great tip! I'll definitely do that when the time comes.

0 coins

Always good to keep records with Washington ESD. They lose stuff sometimes.
