How long before you get unemployment benefits approved in Washington?
Filed my Washington ESD claim about 10 days ago and still haven't received any payments. My claim status shows 'pending' but I'm not sure what that means exactly. I've been doing my weekly claims like I'm supposed to but getting anxious about when I'll actually see money. How long does it typically take before you get unemployment benefits? I need to know if I should be worried or if this is normal timing.

Usually takes 2-3 weeks if everything goes smoothly. Have you checked if your claim is in adjudication? That can add extra time.

•How do I check if it's in adjudication? I don't see that word anywhere on my account.

•Log into your Washington ESD account and look under claim status. If it says 'adjudication in progress' that means they're reviewing something.

The waiting period can vary a lot depending on your situation. If you quit your job or got fired, expect longer processing times. Regular layoffs are usually faster to approve.

•I was laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully that helps speed things up.

•That should be straightforward then. Layoffs are usually approved without much delay once they verify your employer info.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check your status, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an agent. They have a system that gets you connected faster than trying to call yourself. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - I was skeptical too but got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. Really saved me time when I needed to check on my adjudication status.

•Interesting, might have to try that if my claim keeps dragging on.

Washington ESD is so slow with everything. I waited 5 weeks for my first payment and they never explained why it took so long.

•5 weeks?! That's terrifying. Did you eventually get all your back pay?

•Yeah I got everything I was owed but it was stressful not knowing what was happening. The lack of communication is the worst part.

Make sure you're doing your weekly claims every week even if you haven't been paid yet. Missing those can mess up your payments later.

•Yes I've been doing them religiously every Sunday. At least that part seems to be working okay.

Also check that your direct deposit info is correct. I know someone who waited weeks only to find out their bank account number was wrong.

•Good point, I'll double check that. Would hate for it to be something that simple.

•This happened to my cousin too. The payment got rejected by the bank and it took another week to sort out.

The general timeline is: initial claim processing (1-2 weeks), then first payment if approved (another 3-5 business days). But adjudication, missing documents, or employer disputes can extend this significantly.

•That's helpful to know the typical timeline. Sounds like I'm still within normal range then.

•Yeah don't panic yet. Two weeks is pretty standard especially if you filed right after a weekend.

I'm in the same boat - filed 12 days ago and still waiting. The uncertainty is killing me.

•At least we're not alone! Maybe we'll both hear something this week.

•Fingers crossed. I might try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned if I don't hear anything by Friday.

Have you gotten any correspondence from Washington ESD? Sometimes they send requests for additional info that people miss.

•I check my account daily but haven't seen any requests. Should I be looking somewhere specific?

•Check both your online account inbox and your physical mail. Sometimes they send stuff both ways.

Washington ESD is understaffed and overworked. 10 days isn't that long in the grand scheme of things, even though it feels like forever when you need the money.

•You're right, I'm probably just being impatient because I'm stressed about bills.

•The stress is totally understandable though. Waiting for unemployment when you have no income is nerve-wracking.

Update on the Claimyr service I mentioned earlier - I used it again yesterday to ask about my job search requirements and got through in about 20 minutes. Much better than the 2+ hours I usually spend trying to call Washington ESD directly.

•How much does it cost? Might be worth it if it actually saves time.

•It's worth checking out their site for details. For me the time savings alone made it worthwhile since I couldn't afford to spend whole days trying to get through.

If you're really concerned, you can try calling the Washington ESD customer service line early in the morning around 8am. That's usually when wait times are shortest.

Abigail Spencer
•I've tried calling a few times but always get disconnected after being on hold forever.

•Same here, their phone system is awful. That's probably why people are using services like Claimyr.

Don't forget that there's usually a one-week waiting period for unemployment benefits even after you're approved. So your first payment might cover week 2 onwards.

Abigail Spencer
•Oh I didn't know about the waiting period. That explains some of the delay then.

Logan Chiang
•Yeah the waiting week is standard in Washington. It's not paid but it counts toward your benefit year.

I work at a nonprofit that helps people with unemployment issues. Two weeks is completely normal for initial processing. The system is backed up but not unusually so right now.

Just be patient and keep doing your weekly claims. I know it's easier said than done when you're worried about money.

My sister waited 4 weeks but that was because her former employer contested the claim. If you were laid off it should be faster.

Abigail Spencer
•My company was pretty good about the layoffs so I don't think they'll contest it. Hopefully that helps.

•Yeah employer contests can really slow things down. Sounds like you should be fine.

Final update - if anyone else is struggling to get through to Washington ESD, that Claimyr service I mentioned has been a game changer. Used it three times now and always got connected to an agent quickly. Definitely recommend checking it out if you're stuck.
