ESD flagged my account for workers comp when I've never filed L&I claim - system error?
I'm completely confused right now. Just checked my ESD account and there's a notification saying they've received information that I'm receiving or have applied for workers compensation benefits. This makes absolutely no sense - I was laid off from my construction job due to project completion, but I've NEVER filed any L&I claim or had any workplace injury. When I googled this issue, it seems to be related to workers comp conflicts, but that doesn't apply to me at all! Has anyone else had this random flag appear on their account? Is this just another ESD system glitch? I'm worried this will delay my benefits, but I know for certain I haven't applied for anything besides regular unemployment after my layoff in March 2025.

•Ugh, 3 weeks?? Did they eventually fix it on their own or did you have to keep calling them? I really can't wait that long without payment.

This is a relatively common issue that happens when there's a data match error in the system. ESD automatically cross-references with L&I databases, and sometimes there are false matches with similar names or SSNs. You need to call ESD directly to get this resolved - they'll need to verify your identity and manually clear the flag. Make sure you have your claim ID, SSN, and employment history ready when you call. This won't resolve itself automatically.

•Thanks for explaining! I've been trying to call for two days straight but can't get through - just disconnects after the automated message about high call volume.

•The same EXACT thing happened to my brother-in-law! They put a workers comp flag on his account and he was like WTF I work remotely as a software developer and haven't left my house in months lol. ESD system is SO broken it's not even funny anymore.

I went through this exact situation in January. The cross-matching system between ESD and L&I sometimes flags accounts incorrectly when there's someone with a similar name or SSN who actually did file for workers comp. You have two options: 1. Keep calling ESD (which is nearly impossible) 2. Submit documentation through your eServices portal showing you haven't received L&I benefits I tried option 2 first by uploading a signed statement explaining the error, but ultimately had to get through to an agent to fix it. The issue is that if you're receiving workers comp, you can't typically receive full unemployment benefits simultaneously - that's why they flag it.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! I tried uploading a statement yesterday but my account still shows the issue. I'll keep trying to call, but it's so frustrating to be stuck in this limbo.

After dealing with the EXACT same issue last month, I finally got through to ESD using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They connect you with ESD agents by essentially waiting on hold for you - you just watch their video demo (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3) to see how it works. The agent I spoke with said these workers comp flags are happening a lot lately due to some database integration issues they're having with the L&I system. Took the agent about 5 minutes to clear the flag once I explained I'd never filed for workers comp. My payments resumed the next day!

•Does that service actually work? I tried calling ESD for 2 weeks straight about my benefits being cut off and never got through. Might try this if it actually helps.

•It worked for me! I was skeptical too but after wasting 3 days trying to call them myself, I was desperate. Got connected to an agent in about 40 minutes.

This happened to me last year. It's a fairly common data-matching error in their system. What's happening is that ESD and L&I have an automated information-sharing process to prevent people from double-dipping benefits. When there's a match (or in your case, a false match), your unemployment benefits get flagged for review. You ABSOLUTELY need to address this or your claim will remain in limbo. Unfortunately, uploading documents rarely resolves this specific issue because it requires a manual review by an adjudicator. The system won't auto-clear this type of flag. While waiting to connect with ESD, make sure you continue filing your weekly claims even if you're not getting paid. Once the issue is resolved, they'll process backpay for any eligible weeks.

•Thanks for the warning - I definitely don't want this to drag on. I'll keep filing my weekly claims and focus on trying to reach someone at ESD asap.

ESD is SUCH a mess right now!!!! I swear they just make up new problems every month. My cousin had something similar where they said he was getting paid by some employer he never worked for. Took him like 7 weeks to fix and he almost got EVICTED waiting for his benefits!!!!!

•While that's frustrating, these cross-matching systems are actually designed to prevent fraud. The problem is they're set to be overly cautious, so they generate a lot of false positives. It's better to have your legitimate claim temporarily delayed than to allow fraudulent claims to be paid out unchecked. Though I agree the resolution process should be much faster.

Update: Finally got through to ESD this morning after 3 days of trying! The agent confirmed it was a system error - apparently someone with a similar name (not even the same last name, just similar) had applied for L&I in my county. She cleared the flag while I was on the phone and said my payments should resume with next week's claim. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

•Great to hear you got it resolved! Just be sure to keep an eye on your account for the next couple of weeks to make sure the flag doesn't mysteriously reappear. Sometimes these system errors can be persistent.

@user6 I ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Honestly didn't think it would work, but I was desperate and it actually connected me to an ESD agent in about 30 minutes. Worth it to get this resolved so quickly!

•Thanks for letting me know! Might have to try that tomorrow if I still can't get through.
