Mysterious ESD payment received - no documentation on portal - overpayment waiver related?

I'm totally confused about what's happening with my ESD account. Back in 2020 I filed for unemployment, but later got declined for some weeks. Ended up having to make overpayment payments throughout 2021 (about $4,800 total) which I eventually paid off completely. When those overpayment waivers became available, I filed for one right away. Fast forward to last week (11/05/2025), I suddenly got a payment of $2,340 deposited directly to my bank account from ESD! There's absolutely NOTHING in my eServices portal explaining this money. No messages, no notices, nothing showing in my payment history. I have no idea if this is from my waiver being approved or what? I've tried calling ESD literally 14 times over the past three days but either get the "all lines are busy" message or get disconnected. Has anyone else received random payments years after filing? Should I be worried about spending this money? What if they want it back again?

That sounds like your overpayment waiver was approved! The same thing happened to me in January - random deposit with zero explanation on the portal. It took about 2 weeks for any documentation to show up. The system is super backed up right now with all the layoffs happening in tech.

Thank you! Did you end up calling them to confirm before spending the money? I'm nervous about using it without official documentation.

DONT SPEND IT!!!!! ESD makes mistakes ALL THE TIME and will demand that money back if they screwed up! happened to my cousin last year and they froze his acct when he cudnt pay it all back!

This is incorrect information. If ESD approves an overpayment waiver, they are required to return any money you already paid toward that debt. The payment is likely legitimate if OP filed a waiver, but it's always good to confirm before spending. Check your Notices tab in eServices - sometimes documents appear there before they show in the main portal.

Here's what's likely happening: When an overpayment waiver is approved, ESD is required to refund any amounts you already paid toward that debt. The $2,340 is probably a partial refund of your $4,800 overpayment. A few things to check: 1. Look in the Notices section of eServices, not just the main dashboard 2. Check your postal mail - ESD still sends some decisions by regular mail 3. Check your email spam folder for notifications The documentation lag is frustrating but normal. Their system processes payments before updating the documentation in many cases.

This makes SO much sense! I just checked my mail pile (I'm terrible about opening it promptly) and found a letter from ESD dated 10/28. It says my waiver was approved for about half the amount I paid back. Thank you!

When I was on unemployment back in 2021 I got this random payment too and freaked out. Turns out it was back pay for weeks they originally denied but then reversed on appeal. Totally different situation from yours but just shows how ESD NEVER explains anything clearly lol. I had applied for retail jobs during my waiting week and ended up getting hired at Target but then they gave me unemployment for that week anyway even though I was already working?? The system is so broken.

The waiting week thing isn't a mistake - during certain periods they waived the waiting week requirement. That's completely different from an overpayment waiver situation though.

I'd recommend using Claimyr to get through to an ESD agent. I was in a similar situation last month (different issue but same impossible phone situation). I tried for days with no luck, then used claimyr.com and got through to a real person in about 25 minutes. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 It worked great for me, and the agent confirmed my payment was legit and explained exactly why I received it. Much better than stressing for weeks!

Thanks for this tip! I'm going to try it tomorrow. I need to get this sorted out before I make any financial decisions based on this payment.

Another thing to note: if your waiver was only partially approved (which seems likely based on the payment amount being less than your total overpayment), you should receive detailed documentation explaining which weeks were waived and which weren't. This is important for your tax records, as waived overpayments may have different tax implications than refunded payments you made with post-tax dollars. When you do connect with ESD, ask specifically for a breakdown of the waiver decision by week. This will help clarify exactly what the payment represents.

I didn't even think about the tax implications! I'm definitely going to ask for that breakdown. The letter I found was pretty general - just said partial approval but didn't list specific weeks.

No kidding! The lack of communication is the worst part of dealing with ESD. Even a simple automated email would help so much.

Update for anyone finding this thread later: I spoke with an ESD representative about this exact situation recently. For overpayment waivers processed in 2025, there is currently a system issue where the payment processes correctly but the documentation is delayed by 2-3 weeks in appearing on the portal. They're aware of the problem and working on a fix. In the meantime, they recommend: 1. Keep checking your physical mail and the Notices section of eServices 2. Don't spend the money until you have official confirmation 3. If you need immediate clarification, calling is unfortunately the only option The good news is that these refunds from approved waivers are legitimate and you will eventually receive documentation.

Thank you for sharing this! I was able to get through today (used that Claimyr service someone mentioned) and they confirmed exactly what you said - system issue with documentation but the payment is legitimate. Such a relief!
