Unexpected ESD overpayment waiver email with no prior notification - what does this mean?

Got the weirdest email from ESD yesterday about qualifying for an 'overpayment waiver' and I'm totally confused. They've NEVER told me I was overpaid or that I owe them money - not by mail, not in eServices, nothing! The email says they 'may be able to waive it' but didn't say how much or why. I checked my ESD account and there's zero indication of any issues. Throughout my entire claim last year (laid off from restaurant management), I had zero problems with my benefits. No pending issues, no adjudication, payments were always on time. Now out of nowhere this email?? Has anyone else gotten something like this recently? Is it some kind of scam? Should I be worried about my bank account?

check ur esrvices account under notices. they probably sent u something there but didn't mail it. happened to me last month, suddenly got hit with $4200 overpayment from 2025 that i knew nothing about. they said i didnt report some income but i reported everything!!

Thanks for the info. I never even knew there was an "Overpayments" tab! Just found it and you're right - there's a notice from 3 weeks ago saying I was overpaid $2,850 because of "unreported earnings" during weeks in October. But I wasn't even working then! I reported every single dollar I made when I started my new job in December. This makes no sense.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS RIGGED TO GENERATE THESE FAKE OVERPAYMENTS!!! I've been fighting one for 3 months. They make it IMPOSSIBLE to prove your innocence. No matter what documentation you provide, they say it's not enough. Then they start garnishing your wages without warning!!! They're trying to claw back money because the state budget is tight. DON'T TRUST THEM!!

UPDATE: Finally managed to speak with an ESD agent! Turns out this was exactly what someone mentioned above - they were counting my final paycheck + vacation payout as "unreported earnings" even though I DID report it. The agent found my original reports and has submitted a correction to remove the overpayment completely. She said the system sometimes flags these automatically during audits and human review is needed to fix it. Such a relief!
