Mysterious overpayment waiver option in ESD account with no actual overpayment notice - glitch?

So I logged into my ESD account yesterday to check on something completely unrelated, and I noticed there's now a "apply for overpayment waiver" option in my dashboard. The weird thing is, I haven't received ANY notification about an overpayment - no letters in the mail, no messages in my ESD inbox, nothing showing in my payment history indicating I owe money back. My claim ended about 4 months ago and everything seemed fine. Is this just a new tab they've added to everyone's account as a standard feature? Or should I be worried that they're planning to hit me with an overpayment notice soon? I'm getting really anxious about this because I can't afford to pay anything back right now. Has anyone else noticed this appearing in their account without any actual overpayment being assessed?

this happened to me too! i freaked out for like 3 days thinking they were gonna make me repay everything. turns out it was just a system update where they added that option to everyone's dashboard. if u dont have an actual overpayment notice or letter you should be fine

Oh thank god! That's a relief to hear. Did you confirm this with ESD directly or did you just wait and see if anything happened?

I work with UI claimants regularly, and I can confirm this is just a recent system update. ESD has added several new self-service options to everyone's accounts regardless of whether you need them or not. If you actually had an overpayment, you would receive: 1. A written determination in your ESD message center 2. A physical letter mailed to your address 3. A clear indication in your payment history showing the overpayment amount 4. Usually a phone call from an ESD agent Without any of these, you're fine. It's just poor interface design that's causing unnecessary anxiety for many claimants. They should have made these options only appear when relevant to your specific claim situation.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! It's so helpful to get insight from someone who understands the system. I really wish ESD would consider how these interface choices affect people emotionally - seeing "overpayment" anywhere is enough to send someone into a panic attack!

DONT TRUST IT!!! my cousin had the same thing happen and 2 weeks later BAM they hit him with a $6700 overpayment notice! he had no idea it was coming. they're slowly processing all the claims from the pandemic and finding "mistakes" everywhere. start saving money NOW just in case

This is misleading information. An overpayment option appearing in the interface is not predictive of future overpayments. ESD processes overpayments based on claim audits, not based on UI interface features. If your cousin received an overpayment notice, it was coincidental timing with the system update, not caused by it. Please be careful about causing unnecessary panic.

I've been dealing with this exact same situation! I called ESD last week about it (took me 3 days of trying to get through) and the agent confirmed it's just a system-wide update to their portal. She said something about wanting to make all potential options available to users even if they don't apply to everyone's situation. If you want peace of mind, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual ESD agent. It helped me get through after days of failed attempts. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Totally worth it to stop worrying about potentially owing thousands of dollars!

Thanks for the suggestion! I might do that just for peace of mind. Did the agent give you any documentation or confirmation in writing that there's no overpayment on your account? I'd like to have something official just in case.

No problem! The agent didn't provide anything in writing specifically about the overpayment waiver button, but she did send me an account statement showing my claim was closed with no outstanding issues or balance. I'd recommend asking for that. It shows up in your ESD message center within a day or two after they send it.

my friend works at esd (not supposed to tell anyone lol) but she said they added a bunch of new options to everyone's accounts last month. something about "streamlining the user experience" whatever that means. if u dont have an actual notice u should be fine

This is correct. ESD implemented a UI update in February 2025 that standardized the dashboard options across all user accounts. It's part of their new "comprehensive self-service portal" initiative. The standardization means all users see the same options regardless of whether they apply to their specific situation. It's confusing many claimants, but if there's no actual overpayment notice or determination, there's no overpayment to be concerned about.

I just want to clarify something important about overpayments with ESD, since there seems to be some confusion in this thread: 1. Overpayments are NEVER a surprise - they are always accompanied by a formal written determination that explains why the overpayment occurred, how much you owe, and your appeal rights 2. You would have a specific timeframe (30 days) to appeal the determination 3. The waiver application option is separate from an actual overpayment determination 4. ESD has 3 years from the date of payment to establish an overpayment The system update adding this option to everyone's dashboard is unfortunately causing unnecessary anxiety for many claimants. For future reference, always check your ESD message center and mail for official determinations before worrying about dashboard options.

This is incredibly helpful information, thank you! The 3-year timeframe is longer than I realized, but it's good to know they can't just spring it on you without proper notification. I'll keep an eye on my message center and mail. Really appreciate everyone's help with this!
