ESD claim stuck in tax department review - how long until resolution?

So frustrating! After waiting 7 weeks for my regular UI claim to process, I finally got hold of someone at ESD yesterday who told me my claim is being reviewed by their 'tax department' to verify my paystubs and employment history. The agent couldn't give me any timeline and said they literally can't even REQUEST an update for 20 business days! Has anyone gone through this tax department review before? How long did it take in your experience? I'm going on 2 months without income and my savings are nearly gone. This feels like another endless black hole in the ESD system.

same happened to me in Feb... tax dept review took 31 days total. No updates no communication nothing. Then one day just got approved. hang in there

31 days?! That's insane. Did you do anything during that time or just wait it out?

The tax department review is one of the more thorough verification processes at ESD. They're cross-checking your reported wages against what your employer(s) reported to the state. If there are any discrepancies, they need to investigate. Unfortunately, the 20 business days timeline is pretty standard - they don't even allow internal status checks before that period ends.\n\nMake sure you've uploaded all your paystubs and W-2s to your eServices account. If you worked for multiple employers during your base year, having documentation for all of them can speed things up.

You can try requesting a hardship expedition, but you'll need to document your financial emergency. Call and specifically request to speak with a claims center specialist about a hardship expedition for your tax department review. Be prepared to provide evidence of potential eviction, utility shutoffs, or other immediate financial crises.

I've been through this tax department review twice in the past three years. The first time took about 25 calendar days, the second time nearly 45 days. I think it depends on how complicated your work history is and whether your employers respond quickly to ESD's information requests.

Did they tell you what specifically they were reviewing or checking? The agent I spoke with was super vague.

I'm actually having the exact same issue right now! My claim has been in tax department review for 16 business days. I've tried calling ESD at least twice a day every day for the past week and can never get through. The automated system just disconnects me after saying they're experiencing high call volume.\n\nHas anyone found a reliable way to actually reach a human being at ESD? I'm desperate to get some kind of update or timeline.

I was in the same boat last month and found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an ESD agent in about 30 minutes. They basically keep dialing for you until they get through, then connect you. Saved me days of frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. It worked great for my tax department review situation - the agent I finally spoke with was able to see exactly what was missing and I got it resolved the same day.

wait whats the difference between the tax dept review and adjudication?? my claim says adjudciation in progress for 3 weeks is that the same thing??

They're actually different processes. Tax department review is specifically checking your wage history and employment verification. Adjudication is reviewing potential eligibility issues like job separation reason (quit vs. fired), availability for work, etc. You can be in either or sometimes both at the same time.
