7 weeks of 'pending' ESD claims despite submitting termination letter - why the delay?
I'm at my wit's end with ESD right now. I filed my initial unemployment claim on February 25th (almost 2 months ago!) and EVERY SINGLE weekly claim since then still shows as 'pending'. I've uploaded all the required documentation including my termination letter from my previous employer where I worked in healthcare admin for 3+ years. I've answered all the fact-finding questions honestly. My previous employer shouldn't be contesting this since I was laid off due to budget cuts. I check eServices obsessively every day hoping to see movement but nothing changes. I've tried calling dozens of times but either get disconnected or wait on hold for hours only to have the call drop. Has anyone else experienced such a long pending period? What could be causing this delay? My savings are almost gone and I'm starting to panic about making rent next month...

•10 weeks?! That's horrifying. Did you ever find out what was causing the delay in your case?

This is unfortunately common with ESD claims right now. Several things could be happening: 1) Your claim is likely in adjudication, which means they're investigating something. This could be triggered by how you answered questions about your separation or availability for work. 2) ESD might be waiting for your former employer to respond, and they have up to 10 business days to do so. 3) The system might have flagged your claim for identity verification, which is creating a backlog. What you should do: - Check your ESD account for any alerts or messages in your correspondence folder - Look for any letters they may have mailed you requesting additional information - Try calling right when they open (usually 8am) for slightly better chances of getting through - Make sure you continue filing your weekly claims even while pending

•Thank you for the detailed response. I've checked my correspondence folder obsessively and there's nothing there requesting additional info. I don't understand why this is happening when I have a clear-cut layoff case with documentation. I'll try calling right at 8am tomorrow.

Have you tried reaching out to your previous employer to make sure they actually responded to ESD? Sometimes they forget or ignore the request and that can hold everything up. Also make sure you keep filling your weekly claims even though they're pending!

•That's a good idea. I was on good terms with HR, so I could reach out and ask if they've responded to ESD. And yes, I'm definitely still filing every week, just frustrating to see them all stuck in pending.

This exact same thing happened to me!! My claims were stuck in pending for 6 weeks and I was about to be evicted. I finally got through to ESD after trying Claimyr.com - it connected me to an agent within 25 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own with no luck. They found out my employer had contested my claim even though I was laid off! The ESD agent fixed it on the spot and my payments started processing the next day. There's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 - seriously was worth it to finally get answers.

•Thank you for the recommendation! At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything. Did the agent tell you why your claim was held up for so long without any notification?

I work as a career counselor and see this frequently with clients. When claims stay pending for this long (7+ weeks), it's usually due to one of three things: 1. Identity verification issues in the background that don't always generate a notice 2. An employer contest that's being processed through adjudication 3. A system flag related to your work history or availability The most effective approach is to speak directly with an ESD claims specialist who can look at your specific file. Unfortunately, their phone system is overwhelmed. Consider reaching out to your state representative's office as well - they often have dedicated contacts at ESD who can expedite stuck claims. Also, request a formal determination in writing if you do get through - this gives you something to appeal if needed.

•I hadn't thought about contacting my state rep - that's a great suggestion. I'll try that approach in parallel with continuing to call ESD directly. Thank you for the expert advice!

My pending status turned out to be becuz i answered ONE question wrong on my weekly claim. I said "no" to being able and available for work the week I had a medical procedure, and that triggered the whole claim to get stuck!!! Check your weekly claim answers carefully, sometimes its the smallest thing that causes problems. When I finally got through to ESD they fixed it in 5 minutes. So frustrating.

•I've double-checked all my weekly claims and I'm 99% sure I answered everything correctly. I haven't had any medical issues or anything that would make me unavailable for work. It's so frustrating not knowing what's causing the hold-up!

This is EXACTLY why people give up on claiming benefits they DESERVE! The system is DESIGNED to be difficult and frustrating so fewer people get their money. I waited 12 weeks last year with zero communication from ESD despite calling 100+ times. When I finally got through they said "oh we were missing one piece of info" that they NEVER TOLD ME ABOUT!!! They hope you'll just give up. DON'T STOP FIGHTING FOR YOUR MONEY!!!

•That's what I'm afraid of - that there's some mysterious missing information they need but haven't bothered to tell me about. I definitely won't give up, but it's so stressful living in limbo like this.

One update based on your situation - make sure you check both your ESD account messages AND your personal email account. Some notices don't show up in the ESD portal but get sent to your email. Also, check your spam/junk folders. I've seen cases where critical ESD communications ended up filtered out.

•I just checked all my email folders including spam and there's nothing from ESD except the initial account creation confirmation. It really seems like they haven't tried to contact me at all, which is the most frustrating part.

I finally got through to an agent today! Turns out my claim was flagged for adjudication because my former employer reported a different reason for separation than I did. I said I was laid off (which I was), but they categorized it as a "position elimination" which apparently is treated differently in the system. The agent updated my claim and said I should see payment within 3-5 business days for all my pending weeks! Keep trying to get through - sometimes it really is just a simple misunderstanding that's causing the delay.

•That's great news! That makes me wonder if something similar is happening with my claim. My position was eliminated due to budget cuts, but I classified it as a layoff. Maybe that's causing the confusion. This gives me hope - I'll keep trying to reach someone.

Don't forget to document EVERYTHING. Each time you call, write down the date, time, and what happened (even if you couldn't get through). If you eventually need to escalate this or file an appeal, having this documentation really helps. Also, if you do get through, ask for a direct number or extension to reach that same person again if possible!

•That's smart advice. I'll start keeping a detailed log of all my attempts. Hopefully it won't come to needing an appeal, but better to be prepared.
