ESD claim stuck for months - single mom of 5 desperate for resources before holidays

I'm at my wit's end with ESD. My claim has been "in progress" for over 3 months now! I've called dozens of times but either get disconnected or told "it's still processing" with zero actual help. Meanwhile, I'm a single mom with 5 kids, and everything is falling apart. My car just got repossessed last week, every single bill is in collections, and I foolishly thought MAYBE the claim would process in time for the holidays so my kids could have something. Nope. Nothing. Just more automated emails saying "we're working on it." Has anyone been through this nightmare and actually gotten their benefits? Are there ANY emergency resources for families while ESD takes their sweet time? I'm trying everything but food banks can only help so much when you're about to be evicted. Any advice at all would be appreciated.

OMG I know exactly how you feel!!! I waited 4 months last year and was ready to lose my MIND. Do you know why your claim is delayed? Is it in adjudication or just general processing? Have you tried contacting your state representative? That's what finally worked for me.

It says "adjudication in progress" but nobody can tell me why or what's wrong. I didn't even think about contacting a state rep - how do I find out who mine is?

Call 211 immediately! They can connect you with emergency assistance programs while you wait for ESD to get their act together. They might be able to help with emergency rent assistance and holiday programs for your kids. Also, if you're in adjudication for months, something is seriously wrong - you need to escalate this ASAP.

Thank you! I'll call 211 today. I've been so focused on ESD I didn't think about other resources.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. ESD adjudication should NOT take 3+ months - something's definitely wrong. Here's what you need to do: 1. Find your district's state representative at leg.wa.gov and email AND call their office. Explain your situation and ask for help with your ESD claim. 2. File a formal complaint with the governor's office about the delay. 3. Check if you accidentally answered something on your application that triggered an investigation (previous job termination issues, availability questions, etc). 4. Make sure you're still filing weekly claims even while waiting for the main claim decision. If you do all of these, you should see movement within 2 weeks. The system is overwhelmed but these steps usually break through the logjam.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I've been filing weekly claims but didn't know about the other steps. I'm going to do all of this today.

i had smiliar isue and tried for WEEKS to get thru to esd. nothing worked. finally used a service called claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me past the busy signals. they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 but basically they get u in the call queue and call u when an agent is ready. i thought it wouldn't work but i talked to a real person finally and got my adjudication issue fixed in 20 mins!!! worth checking out since nothng else is working for u

Thank you, I'll look into this! At this point I'd try anything to talk to a real person at ESD.

In addition to the excellent advice already shared, please contact your local WorkSource office directly. They sometimes have special channels to ESD for urgent cases, especially when there are children involved. Also, many WorkSource locations partner with community organizations offering holiday assistance programs. The deadline for most holiday assistance programs is typically around December 15th, so you'll want to act quickly. For the adjudication issue specifically - this typically happens when there's conflicting information between what you reported and what your employer reported, or if there are questions about your job separation. Did you receive any letters or messages in your ESD account requesting additional information? Sometimes these notifications get buried in the portal.

You're right! I just checked my portal again and found a message from weeks ago asking for documentation about my last day of work. It was hidden in a submenu I didn't even know existed. I'm uploading the info right now - thank you so much!

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU GIVE UP!!!!! i waited SIX MONTHS last year and when i finally got approved they claimed i "didnt respond to requests for info" THAT THEY NEVER SENT ME!!!! its all a scam to save money by denying legitimate claims. evry1 here giving advice means well but THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN ON PURPOSE!!!!

While I understand your frustration, this isn't helpful for someone in an emergency situation. There are legitimate ways to navigate the system, even with its flaws. OP needs practical solutions right now, not discouragement.

Just following up - were you able to connect with any resources through 211? Also, now that you found that hidden message in your portal, you should call ESD directly and tell them you just found it and submitted the required info. That might speed things up. When claims are in adjudication because of missing information, they can sometimes resolve quickly once you provide what they need.

Yes! 211 connected me with an emergency assistance program that's helping with next month's rent. And I finally got through to ESD after using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. The agent saw I uploaded the missing docs and pushed my claim to be reviewed this week! She said I should have a decision by Friday. I can't believe after months of nothing, things might actually be resolved before Christmas. Thank you all so much for your help!
