Waiting 5 weeks for ESD approval - facing eviction soon, need urgent help!
I'm seriously at my breaking point with this ESD waiting game. Applied for unemployment benefits 5 weeks ago and STILL nothing! My online account just says "processing" with no updates or explanation. Meanwhile, my landlord is threatening eviction over just $60 I'm short on rent (which is crazy considering I owe $1,875 total). I've tried calling ESD like 30+ times but either get disconnected or told the wait is 4+ hours. Honestly how long is this supposed to take?? I thought benefits were supposed to help people NOT become homeless? The stress is making me physically sick - can't sleep, barely eating. Has anyone else had their claim take this long? Is there ANYTHING I can do to speed this up before I'm literally out on the street? ðŸ˜

Unfortunately, 5 weeks isn't unusual these days. ESD is seriously backlogged with claims, especially if yours got flagged for adjudication for any reason. Did you get any notifications about identity verification or work history questions? Those typically cause longer delays. Have you checked your spam folder for emails from ESD?

•No notifications at all! That's what's so frustrating. I checked spam, nothing there either. My account just shows "processing" with no explanation. How am I supposed to know what's going on???

•This is exactly why the system is broken. They make us wait weeks with no income while bills pile up, then expect us to somehow still be job searching without transportation or internet when those bills don't get paid. It's designed to fail people.

I know this is stressful, but there are a few things you can try: 1. For your immediate eviction concern - contact your local housing authority or 211 for emergency rental assistance. Most counties have funds specifically for preventing eviction, especially if you're only $60 short. 2. For your ESD claim - You need to speak with an actual adjudicator. The regular representatives usually can't help much with stuck claims. Try contacting your state representative's office - they often have dedicated ESD liaisons who can escalate your case. 3. Check your account for any "Alert" or "Action Needed" indicators. Sometimes they're easy to miss but indicate why your claim is delayed. 4. Make sure you're still filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial determination. Hang in there - once approved, you'll get back pay for all eligible weeks.

•Thank you for these ideas! I had no idea about the state rep option - I'll definitely try that tomorrow. And yes, I've been filing weekly claims religiously even though nothing's happening. Will call 211 today about the rent situation. Really appreciate the actual helpful advice.

When I was waiting for weeks like you, I finally got through to ESD using Claimyr. It's this service that basically waits on hold for you then calls when an agent is available. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 I was skeptical at first, but I was desperate after 3 weeks of trying to call myself. They got me through to an actual person who could see my claim was stuck because of an employer response issue. The agent fixed it on the spot and my payments started the next week. Worth checking out at claimyr.com if you're as desperate as I was!

•is this legit tho?? sounds too good to be true tbh

•It's definitely legit - I wouldn't have recommended it otherwise. The service just navigates ESD's phone system and waits on hold so you don't have to. When they get an agent, they connect you. Saved me hours of frustration and probably my apartment too.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but my claim took NINE WEEKS to process last year. The system is completely overwhelmed and understaffed. ESD doesn't care that we have bills to pay - they just hide behind their "processing times vary" excuse while people lose their homes. The only thing that finally worked for me was showing up IN PERSON at the WorkSource office and refusing to leave until someone helped me. Even then, it took another week after that. The phone system is designed to be a black hole.

•Going to WorkSource is actually good advice, but I'd recommend making an appointment rather than just showing up. They can sometimes see notes on your claim that aren't visible to you online, and they might be able to put in an escalation request if there's no clear reason for the delay.

•OMG thank you! I just checked and there WAS a letter from 3 weeks ago asking for additional employment verification!!! They never notified me it was there! Going to upload those docs right now. You may have just saved me!

Great catch on the correspondence folder! That's so common - ESD often sends important notices there without any email notification. Now that you've found what they need: 1. Upload the requested documents ASAP 2. Call ESD tomorrow (using whatever method works) and specifically tell them you just found and responded to their request 3. Ask them to note your account that you didn't receive notification and to expedite review of your documents When you do get through, politely request they check if your claim qualifies for hardship escalation due to your eviction risk. They don't advertise this option, but agents can flag accounts for expedited processing in dire circumstances.

•Thank you! Documents uploaded and I'll definitely mention the hardship escalation when I call tomorrow. This forum has been more helpful than anything on the official ESD site. Will update once I hear anything!

•I've only worked in WA, so that's not it for me. But good info for others reading this thread who might have multi-state work history!

UPDATE: Finally got through to ESD this morning! The agent confirmed they were waiting on those documents I just uploaded. She said once they review them (1-2 business days) my claim should process and I should see payments for all back weeks within 48 hours after that. I also called 211 and they're helping with emergency rent assistance for this month! Thank you all SO MUCH for your help - especially checking that correspondence folder, which was the key to everything!

•That's excellent news! So glad things are moving forward for you. This is a great reminder for everyone to check their correspondence folder regularly, even when there's no notification. Please update us when your payments come through!
