ESD claim status changed from 'adjudication in progress' to 'waiting for information' but received US Bank card - Am I approved?
First time filer here and totally confused about what's happening with my claim. I was let go from my construction job on November 12th and immediately filed for unemployment on the 13th. On the 14th, my eServices portal showed 'adjudication in progress' which made me nervous since I'd heard that could take forever. Then yesterday (Nov 21st) it changed to 'waiting for information' but when I check 'online activity' there's absolutely nothing that needs my attention. No emails, no messages, nothing to upload. What's weird is I just got a ReliaCard from US Bank in today's mail. Does receiving the debit card mean I'm already approved? Or is this just part of the setup process while they're still deciding? I'm getting really anxious because rent is due soon and I have no idea if/when money will actually show up. Anyone been through this recently?

Getting the card doesn't necessarily mean ur approved yet. They just send those out automatically when u first apply. My claim was stuck in 'waiting for information' for like 3 weeks before anything happened. Have u checked ur spam folder for emails from ESD?

•Just checked spam and nothing there either. Do you remember what finally got your claim unstuck? Did they end up needing something from you or did it just randomly start processing?

The US Bank ReliaCard is sent out automatically when you first file a claim - it doesn't indicate approval status. The status change from "adjudication in progress" to "waiting for information" typically means one of two things: 1. ESD is waiting for information from your employer about your separation 2. There's something they need from you, but it's not showing up in your online portal Have you been filing your weekly claims during this time? Even while your initial claim is pending, you MUST file weekly claims to eventually receive payment for those weeks. Also, check if your former employer is contesting the claim - that often causes delays.

•Yes, I've been filing my weekly claims religiously every Sunday! My former employer did mention they might contest since technically I was fired for "performance issues" (though I think I was meeting all reasonable standards). Maybe that's the holdup?

LOL welcome to ESD hell!!! Got my card weeks before my claim was approved. Their system is a JOKE! Sometimes "waiting for information" means THEY are waiting, not YOU. But u never know with them!!!! 🤬

•Not helpful. Not everyone has a negative experience with ESD. My claim was processed smoothly earlier this year.

This is actually a pretty common situation. The "waiting for information" status usually means they're waiting for your employer to respond to their questionnaire about why you were separated. If your employer contests the claim (which sounds likely based on your comment about performance issues), it will go to adjudication. A few tips: 1. Keep filing your weekly claims without fail 2. Check your online portal at least every other day 3. Answer your phone even if you don't recognize the number (ESD often calls from blocked numbers) 4. Document everything from your former job related to your performance Since your employer mentioned contesting, you might need to provide documentation showing you were meeting standards. Start gathering emails, performance reviews, etc. now rather than scrambling later.

•Thank you! That makes sense. If it goes to adjudication, is there a way to speed up the process? I'm getting worried about bills piling up. I have some emails that show my boss was actually pleased with my work just a few weeks before firing me, so hopefully that helps.

same thing happened to my brother in law last month! he got the card and was all excited thinking he was approved but then nothing happened for like 2 weeks. turns out his boss said he quit but he was actually laid off. took forever to sort out and he couldn't even talk to anyone at esd. super stressful. hope yours goes faster!

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did your brother-in-law ever manage to get through to an actual person at ESD? The wait is killing me.

Since your employer is planning to contest the claim citing performance issues, you'll likely go through a more thorough adjudication process. ESD will need to determine if the performance issues constituted "misconduct" (which would disqualify you) or simply being fired for not meeting expectations (which usually doesn't disqualify you). The difference is important - misconduct requires a deliberate violation of reasonable employer policies, while just not being good enough at your job typically doesn't prevent you from receiving benefits. Be prepared to explain your side clearly when they contact you.

•That's really helpful to understand. I definitely wasn't fired for misconduct - there was no warning, write-up, or anything like that. They just said I wasn't meeting their expectations, but never gave me specific metrics I was failing at. Hopefully that works in my favor.

I had EXACTLY the same situation in January! Was going crazy trying to figure out what 'waiting for information' meant when nothing showed up in my account. Finally found out my employer was fighting it. I wasted WEEKS trying to call ESD but could never get through - their phone system is absolutely horrible. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an ESD agent who explained everything and helped move my claim forward. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 It was the only way I could actually talk to a human being at ESD. The agent told me exactly what was happening with my claim and what documents I needed to submit. Saved me weeks of waiting in the dark.

•Thanks for the tip! I hadn't heard of Claimyr before. Might give that a try if I don't see any movement in the next few days. Did you end up getting approved even though your employer was fighting it?

•Yes, I did get approved eventually! The ESD agent helped me understand exactly what information they needed from me to counter my employer's claims. I had to submit some additional documentation, but once I did that (and the agent noted it in my file), my claim was approved within about 10 days. Just make sure you have good documentation ready to explain your side of the story.

Just to clear up some confusion here - the status sequence you're seeing is actually quite normal. When you first file, it goes to "adjudication in progress" while they do the initial review. Then it changes to "waiting for information" when they've sent the questionnaire to your employer. The ReliaCard is sent automatically when you file, regardless of approval status. They do this so once you are approved (if you are), they can deposit funds immediately rather than making you wait even longer for the card to arrive. Regarding the "performance issues" - Washington state generally considers this a valid reason for benefits UNLESS your employer can prove willful misconduct. Simple inability to meet job requirements usually isn't disqualifying. You should receive a determination letter once they make a decision.

•Thanks for the clear explanation. That makes the process make more sense. Any idea how long it typically takes from "waiting for information" to a decision being made? Just trying to plan my finances accordingly.

•It varies quite a bit, unfortunately. If your employer responds quickly and doesn't contest, it might be 1-2 weeks. If they contest or don't respond promptly, it could be 3-6 weeks. The current average for contested claims is about 4 weeks based on what I've seen in other posts. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims during this time - if approved, you'll get paid for all weeks properly filed.

•That's good to know! I'll make sure to check my mail every day. So far I've only received the ReliaCard, but I'll keep an eye out for anything from ESD. Thanks for the heads up!

I went through something very similar earlier this year! The "waiting for information" status with nothing showing in your portal is frustrating but totally normal - it usually means they're waiting for your employer to respond to their separation questionnaire, not waiting for you to do anything. Since you mentioned your employer might contest due to "performance issues," here's what helped me prepare: I gathered every email, text, or document that showed I was trying to do my job properly. Even small things like emails asking clarifying questions about tasks or positive feedback from coworkers can help show you weren't being willfully negligent. The ReliaCard arriving is just standard procedure - they send it automatically so payments can start immediately once you're approved. Keep filing those weekly claims no matter what! That's the most important thing you can do right now. One more tip: if your employer does contest and it goes to a phone interview, they'll usually give you several days notice. Make sure to answer unknown numbers during business hours and check your mail daily. Good luck!

•Thank you so much for the detailed advice! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing. I'm definitely going to start gathering all my work emails and any positive feedback I received. You're right about the phone interview - I've been nervous about missing an important call. Did they call from a number that showed up as "Washington State" or was it completely blocked? Just want to make sure I don't accidentally ignore the call when it comes.
