Approved for ESD benefits but suddenly in adjudication again - will I get paid?

After nearly 2 months of radio silence, I received an approval letter for my unemployment claim yesterday (woohoo!). But when I logged into my eServices account this morning, I noticed my claim status shows 'adjudication in progress' with today's date. I'm totally confused - I thought the approval letter meant everything was finalized? Does this new adjudication mean more delays before I get paid? My rent is already 3 weeks late and my landlord is running out of patience. Anyone experienced this weird approval-then-adjudication situation and know what happens next?

congrats on the approval! the same thing happened to me back in january. the adjudication after approval is usually for a specific week or issue, not your whole claim. you should still get paid for the weeks not under review. check under your 'pending issues' tab to see what they're looking at

Thanks! I just checked and there's something about 'able and available' listed under pending issues for my most recent week. Do you remember how long yours took to resolve?

The approval letter means your claim is established, but individual weeks can still be held for review. This typically happens when there's a question about a specific week you claimed. The good news is that ESD will usually release payment for all weeks NOT in adjudication, so you should receive at least partial payment soon. Check your 'pending issues' section to see which specific week(s) are affected and what the issue is. Common reasons include questions about your job search activities, working part-time during a claimed week, or reporting availability issues.

That's a huge relief! So I might still get paid for the previous 6 weeks while they sort out this latest week? That would literally save me from eviction.

this is correct! when i had adjudication last year they paid me for 8 weeks all at once while week 9 was in review. took another month for that last week to clear but at least i got most of my money!!!

ESD IS THE WORST!!! This exact thing happened to me and I ended up waiting ANOTHER 5 WEEKS after my so-called "approval" letter before seeing a penny! Their system is completely broken and they don't care how many people suffer. I called 47 times in one day and either got hung up on or was on hold until the office closed. They should all be FIRED!!!

Yikes that sounds terrible! Did you eventually get all your back pay though? I'm worried they'll deny some weeks after making me wait so long.

I finally got paid but only after I contacted my state representative's office and filed a complaint. Suddenly ESD could fix everything in 48 hours when government officials started asking questions! Try that if you don't see movement in a week.

I went through this exact scenario in February! The adjudication after approval is super common but confusing. Here's what happened to me: 1. Got approval letter 2. Saw new adjudication for most recent week 3. Called ESD continously for 3 days (impossible to get through) 4. Used Claimyr service (claimyr.com) to get connected to an ESD agent in about 25 minutes - there's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 5. Agent explained it was just reviewing my job search activities for that one week 6. Got paid for all previous weeks within 48 hours 7. The week in adjudication cleared about 10 days later Don't panic! This is normal, though obviously super stressful when you're waiting for money.

Thank you so much for the detailed breakdown! That's really reassuring to hear. Did you have to provide any additional documentation for the week under review?

What exactly does the approval letter say? There's a difference between an "approval" that just means your claim is established versus an actual payment authorization. Check if there's a monetary determination included in that letter - that tells you what your weekly benefit amount should be. Also, typically the adjudication process is only for specific weeks, not your entire claim, as others have mentioned.

The letter says "Your claim for unemployment benefits has been approved" and lists my weekly benefit amount as $847. There's a section about my base year wages and then instructions for filing weekly claims. Nothing specifically about payment timing though.

don't be surprised if u get a bunch of payments all at once! when my claim was finally processed after being stuck for weeks, i woke up to $5,200 in my account one morning!!! nearly fell out of my chair lol. the esd system is weird about how it processes backpay sometimes

That would be amazing! Fingers crossed I have a similar experience. Did you get any notification before the money showed up or did it just appear?

no warning at all just BOOM money in my account! but be careful about spending it all right away cuz sometimes they can say there was an error and want some back. i waited 3 days before paying my bills just to be safe

My sister went thru this last month and ESD told her that the adjudication was because she answered a weekly certification question differently than usual. Did you maybe say you weren't available for work on your most recent certification or that you didn't complete your job search requirements? That can trigger automatic review even after approval.

Now that you mention it, I did have a doctor's appointment and marked that I was unavailable for work for half a day that week. That must be what triggered it!

Update for everyone: I just called ESD (finally got through after about 90 minutes) and they confirmed that when you receive an approval letter, they will process payment for all weeks NOT under adjudication, typically within 48-72 business hours. The specific week with an issue will be held separately until that issue is resolved. OP should see payment for the majority of their weeks very soon, with the most recent week paying once the 'able and available' issue is resolved. The agent said these typically take 7-10 days to clear when it's a simple availability question.

Thank you so much for taking the time to call and report back! This community has been incredibly helpful. I'll update once I actually see any payments hit my account.
