ESD approved 16 weeks then suddenly DISQUALIFIED ALL - no warning!?
I'm completely stunned by what just happened to my brother's unemployment claim. After being stuck in adjudication for 14 weeks (!!), he finally got a determination letter last week approving benefits from October through mid-February. He had basically given up and stopped filing weekly claims because it seemed hopeless. I helped him go back and file for all those approved weeks (9 total since he started working again about 5 weeks ago). The system seemed fine - each week processed and opened to the next one. That was Friday. Then it showed 'processing' all weekend and through Wednesday. Today we logged in and EVERY SINGLE WEEK shows DISQUALIFIED!!! All 9 weeks he was explicitly approved for in the determination letter! No explanation, no new letters in his account, nothing! Has this happened to anyone? We're trying to call ESD today but we all know how that goes... I'm furious for him. How can they approve 16 weeks then suddenly disqualify everything with no explanation???

I had something similar happen last month. ESD approved my benefits after adjudication, then a week later everything was disqualified. Turns out there was a second adjudication issue that wasn't resolved yet - something about availability for work. Check if there are any other issues listed under 'Notices & Letters' or 'Decisions' in his eServices account. There might be a disqualification letter that explains why.

•We checked every tab in his eServices account - nothing new there at all! The only letter is the approval from last week. That's what makes this so infuriating. Did you ever get through to them to fix your situation?

This happened to my wife in January. The system had approved her, then systematically disqualified everything. The issue turned out to be that her employer had contested the claim AFTER the initial approval (they have 30 days to respond). When we finally reached an agent, they explained this had triggered an automatic disqualification pending review of the employer's new information. She had to wait another 3 weeks for a determination interview, but ultimately got approved again and received all back payments. Did your brother's employer possibly contest the claim after the approval?

•That could be it! His employer was going through a restructuring and was super disorganized about everything. They might have finally responded to ESD. But shouldn't there be SOMETHING in his account explaining this? It just seems crazy to go from approved to disqualified with zero explanation.

•This kind of thing is happening too frequently. The ESD system is failing people when they need help most. I see these issues daily on this forum - missing documents even when properly submitted, mysterious disqualifications, no explanations provided. It's a system designed to frustrate people into giving up their rightful benefits.

When ESD does a mass disqualification like this after an approval, it's usually for one of four reasons: 1. Employer contested the claim after initial approval 2. A new eligibility issue was detected during payment processing 3. Your brother's backfiled claims triggered an automated fraud review 4. There was a system error The most important thing is to get through to an actual agent who can see what's happened on their end. Since it's 9 weeks of benefits, I'm guessing that's around $5,800-$7,000 worth of payments, so it's definitely worth pursuing. If you can't get through via the regular ESD phone number, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that connects you with an ESD agent usually within 1-2 hours instead of days of calling. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The key is getting someone on the inside to look at the claim - they can often resolve these mass disqualifications quickly once they see what triggered it.

•Thank you for explaining those possibilities - that makes sense. I've never heard of Claimyr before, but we're going to check it out right now. You're right about the amount - it's over $6,200 and he really needs that money after being out of work so long. At this point, I just want someone at ESD to actually explain what happened!

Did your brother answer NO to the job search requirements for those backfiled weeks? That's what got me. I was approved after adjudication, then when I backfiled and honestly answered that I hadn't done job searches during some weeks (because I didn't know I'd be approved), they disqualified all those weeks. ESD expects you to do job searches even when your claim is pending and you have no idea if you'll ever get approved.

•He did all his job searches every week and documented everything, even when it seemed hopeless. That's what makes this extra frustrating - he followed every rule to the letter. Thanks for the suggestion though!

check if theres anything in his spam folder? sometimes esd emails go there. my husband got disqualified and the notice went to spam. he only had 30 days to appeal it.

•Great point! Just checked and nothing there either. It's like they made this decision without telling him anything. So frustrating!

Have your brother log into his eServices account and check the "Decisions" tab specifically, not just Notices & Letters. Sometimes disqualification explanations only appear there. Also, look at the "Upload a Document" section - if there's a document request that wasn't fulfilled, it might show there. Finally, did he report any earnings during any of those weeks? Sometimes even small differences between what he reported and what his employer reported can trigger automatic disqualifications.

•We checked everywhere - Decisions, Notices, Upload sections... nothing indicating why this happened. He didn't have any earnings for most of those weeks. For the last two weeks, he reported exactly what he earned at his new job (which was under the threshold). I'm starting to think this must be a system glitch!

Any update on this? Were you able to reach ESD? I'm dealing with a similar issue now and wondering if you found a solution.

•Yes! Finally got through using that Claimyr service someone mentioned above. Turns out his former employer had contested the claim 29 days after the initial approval (right under the 30-day wire). That automatically disqualified everything pending review. The ESD agent said this happens a lot and they should've sent a notice but their notification system has been glitchy. She escalated it and said he'll either get a new determination letter or a call for a fact-finding interview within 10 days. At least we know what happened now!

This is why I always tell people to keep filing their weekly claims even if they think they'll be denied or are waiting forever in adjudication. The system is extremely unpredictable. Glad you found out what happened - the employer contesting at the last minute is exactly what happened to my wife too. Hope your brother gets his benefits soon!

•Thanks! The agent actually said his chances are good since he has documentation showing he was laid off due to the company restructuring. The employer is apparently claiming he could have taken a different position (at 60% less pay and in a different city!). I'll post an update when we hear the final decision.
