Suddenly disqualified after 7 weeks of ESD benefits with no pending issues - why?
I'm so confused and starting to panic. I've been receiving unemployment benefits for about 7 weeks without any problems. I still have plenty of benefit balance left, but when I filed my weekly claim this Sunday, it suddenly shows as "disqualified"! What's worse is that I checked my eServices account and there's NOTHING under "pending issues" or anything requiring my attention. No messages, no alerts, nothing explaining why this is happening. Has anyone else experienced this? One week you're fine and the next you're randomly disqualified with zero explanation? I'm freaking out because I need this money for rent next week. Do I need to call ESD? File an appeal? Wait it out? I'm completely in the dark here!

This happened to me last month! In my case, it was because I accidentally entered my work hours wrong (I put 5 instead of 0.5). Check your weekly claim entries carefully - even small errors can trigger an automatic disqualification. When you look at your weekly claim details, can you see what specific question/answer might have caused the issue?

•I just double-checked and I don't see anything wrong with my entries. I reported no earnings, was available for work all days, and did my three job search activities. Nothing different from previous weeks that were approved. This is so frustrating!

There's been a glitch in the ESD system lately. Several people in my workplace had the same issue last pay period. It could be a technical problem on their end rather than something you did wrong. You'll need to contact ESD directly to get it fixed though - it won't resolve itself automatically.

•yep sounds like the quarterly review glitch. happens every 3 months when they do their system maintenance. call them they'll fix it.

THEY'RE DOING THIS ON PURPOSE!!! ESD randomly disqualifies people hoping they won't fight back. I've seen it happen to DOZENS of people. They're trying to save money by denying legitimate claims. You HAVE TO call them and fight this or they'll just keep your money. The system is designed to be confusing and frustrating so people give up.

•That's a bit extreme. While ESD definitely has problems, random disqualifications are usually system errors or miscommunications, not malicious intent. The unemployment system is overwhelmed and understaffed, which causes these issues.

I had something similar happen in February! They disqualified me for "not being available for work" even though I answered all the questions the same way I always did. Turned out there was a quarterly earnings verification that got flagged in their system but didn't show up in my pending issues. Had to call them to get it sorted. The frustrating part was trying to get through on the phone - it took me THREE DAYS of constant redialing before I could talk to someone. Once I did get through, they fixed it in like 5 minutes.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about! I can't afford to spend days trying to get through just to fix their mistake. Did they backpay you for the missed week once it was fixed?

Yes, they did backpay me once it was fixed, but it took about 10 days for the payment to come through after they resolved the issue. Super stressful when you're counting on that money for bills. I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to ESD much faster. Instead of redialing for days, they got me connected with an agent in about 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The website is claimyr.com. Definitely made the process less nightmarish.

I used Claimyr when I had an adjudication issue that wasn't resolving. It actually did work - got me through to an agent after about 45 minutes. Not instant, but WAY better than the days of calling I was doing before. Worth it when you're desperate.

•Thanks for the tip - I might try that if I can't get through tomorrow. I'll start with traditional calling first thing in the morning, but it's good to know there's a backup option.

One other thing to check - did you recently work any temporary jobs or have any earnings during those 7 weeks? Sometimes there's a delay in employer reporting, and when ESD finally gets the info, they can retroactively disqualify you if there's a discrepancy between what you reported and what the employer reported. Also, look at your monetary determination letter - sometimes benefits can stop if you reach the end of a benefit year or exhaust a specific tier of benefits, even if your account shows a remaining balance.

•No, I haven't worked at all during this period. And my benefit year just started 7 weeks ago, so that shouldn't be the issue. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced it must be some kind of system error. I'll call them first thing tomorrow morning!

•Yes! Finally got it resolved yesterday. Turns out there was a flag on my account because my former employer submitted some information about my separation that conflicted with what I reported. The weird thing was it didn't show up in my pending issues! The ESD agent was able to clear it up after I explained the situation. My status changed back to paid within a few hours after the call. Definitely call them - it won't resolve itself!

For anyone else encountering this issue, I recommend documenting everything when you call. Get the agent's ID number or name, ask for a reference number for the call, and request they send you an email confirmation of any changes they make. ESD can be disorganized, and having documentation has saved me multiple times when issues weren't properly resolved the first time. Also, if calling doesn't work, remember you can submit a secure message through your eServices account. It takes longer to get a response, but creates a paper trail and sometimes works when the phone lines are impossible.

•That's great advice, thank you! I did get the agent's name and a confirmation number. They also told me that sometimes these flags happen during quarterly reviews when they're double-checking everyone's eligibility. Apparently it's fairly common but doesn't always show up properly in the claimant's portal. Just sharing in case it helps someone else!
