ESD suddenly disqualified my approved UI claim with no explanation - help!
I'm seriously freaking out right now. I filed for unemployment after my restaurant closed permanently last month. My claim was APPROVED two weeks ago, I got the monetary determination letter, and everything seemed fine. I've been doing my weekly claims as required. Today I logged into my eServices account to check on my payment and saw 'disqualified' next to this week's claim with $0.00 payment! There's literally NO explanation anywhere. No messages, no letters in my inbox, nothing under 'decisions' explaining why. Has this happened to anyone else? How am I supposed to know what went wrong if they don't tell me? I've tried calling ESD about 30 times today and can't get through. Bills are due next week and I was counting on this money. What do I do now???

This exact thing happened to me in March! It's super frustrating. Check your correspondence tab - sometimes they send you a letter that doesn't show up in alerts. Mine was because I answered a weekly certification question wrong (the one about being able and available). They never actually called it a disqualification letter though, it was called an 'eligibility determination' which is why I missed it at first.

•Thanks, I just checked all my correspondence again and there's nothing new since the initial approval. No eligibility determination or anything! Is there some other tab or section I should be looking at? I don't understand how they can just disqualify me without telling me why???

•Just checked - nothing there either. Just the original approval notices from two weeks ago. So frustrating!

This is fairly common with ESD unfortunately. There are a few possibilities: 1. There might be an identity verification issue that got flagged automatically 2. Your employer might have contested the claim 3. There could be an adjudication issue pending (even though it doesn't show that status) 4. Sometimes there's a system glitch where the disqualification shows before the actual notice is generated You NEED to talk to an actual ESD agent. The issue won't resolve itself and the online system won't tell you what's happening. Keep calling first thing in the morning (right when they open at 8am) and use all the phone lines including the general questions line.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation. I can't imagine my employer contested it - they went out of business completely and the owner even helped us all file for unemployment. I'll try calling right at 8am tomorrow. Is there a specific number that's better to try first? I've been using the main claims center number.

I had this same issue back in February. After trying for WEEKS to get through on the phone, I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an ESD agent in about 25 minutes instead of having to redial for days. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 When I finally spoke with someone, turns out they had flagged my claim because I had worked in two states in the past 18 months, so they needed to verify my wages with the other state. The agent fixed it immediately and my payment was processed the next day. The weird thing is they never sent me ANY notification about it.

•Thank you so much for this suggestion! I'll check out that service if I can't get through tomorrow morning. I've only worked in WA state, but maybe they're confused because I worked at two different restaurants? At this point I just need to talk to a human who can tell me what's going on!

•does that service actually work? seems sketchy to me...

•It worked for me. After 2 weeks of getting nowhere I was desperate enough to try anything. I was connected in like 20-ish minutes when I'd been trying on my own for days.

THE ESD SYSTEM IS HORRIBLE!!!! I got disqualified THREE TIMES for "failure to provide information" even though I NEVER received any requests for information!!! The whole system is designed to deny claims and make you give up. My advice: FILE AN APPEAL IMMEDIATELY even if you don't know what you're appealing. You only have 30 days to appeal from the disqualification date, and waiting for them to explain could burn through your appeal window.

•This is actually good advice. File the appeal online through your eServices account under the "Decisions" tab. Just state that you were disqualified without explanation and would like to know the reason so you can properly respond. That at least preserves your appeal rights.

•Thank you both! I just looked and there's nothing under the Decisions tab either (which seems weird if I'm disqualified?). But I'll definitely file an appeal tomorrow if I can't get through by phone. Good point about the 30-day window.

Something similar happened to me last year. In my case, I had accidentally checked the wrong box on my weekly claim (said I wasn't available for work when I meant to say I was). Is it possible you made an error on your weekly certification? Look carefully at how you answered the questions about: - Being able and available for work - Work search activities (you need 3 per week) - Any earnings or hours reported - Refusing any work If you made a mistake on any of these, you can sometimes self-correct through the weekly claim system, or you'll need to explain to an agent when you get through.

•I just double-checked my weekly claim and I'm pretty sure I answered everything correctly. I said I was available for work, reported my 3 job search activities, and had no earnings to report. I definitely didn't refuse any work offers. I'll try to check again to see if I can spot any mistakes, but I'm normally really careful with those questions.

Quick follow-up question - did you switch to a different browser or device when doing your most recent weekly claim? Sometimes the ESD website has compatibility issues with certain browsers or autocomplete settings that can cause problems. Also, check if the status says "disqualified" or "denied" - they mean different things in the ESD system.

•That's a good thought - I did use my phone for this week's claim instead of my laptop like I usually do. It definitely says "disqualified" not "denied" - I'm looking at it right now. Would that browser change really cause a disqualification though? And wouldn't they still have to tell me why?

my sister works for esd (not in claims tho) and she says sometimes theres just a random flag on ur acct that needs to be removed by a person. could be identity verification or something with ur previous employer. keep calling is my advice!!!!

Any update on your situation? Were you able to get through to ESD and find out what happened?

•Finally got through today! Turns out there was a system error where my claim got flagged for "work separation issues" even though I already provided that information when I first applied. The agent was able to see there was no actual issue and cleared the flag. Payment should be processed in 48 hours. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions! I'm definitely keeping those state rep contact details in case this happens again.
