ESD approved my benefits but weekly claims show 'disqualified' - what's going on?
I'm totally confused and getting anxious about my unemployment situation. I received an official letter from ESD dated January, 2025 stating I was approved for UI benefits starting January 3rd with a weekly benefit amount of $850. Great news, right? But when I log into my eServices account and check my weekly claims, they're ALL showing 'disqualified' with no explanation! I've filed for 3 weeks now and every single one says the same thing. My monetary determination letter clearly says I'm eligible, so why are my weeks disqualified? I've tried calling ESD about 20 times this week but can't get through to anyone. Has anyone else experienced this disconnect between their approval letter and what shows online? What should I do?

sounds like u might have answerd something wrong on ur weekly claim forms. they ask those tricky questions about being able and available for work, did u look for work, etc. if u say NO to any of those or forget to log ur job searches it auto disqualifies u

•I double-checked all my responses and I definitely answered YES to being able and available. I've been doing my 3 job search activities every week and logging them. Nothing obvious that would cause a disqualification... that's why I'm so confused!

This is actually fairly common. The approval letter is just confirming you're monetarily eligible (meaning you earned enough in your base year to qualify for benefits). However, there are non-monetary eligibility factors that can cause weekly claims to be disqualified. The most common reasons are: 1. Not being able and available for full-time work 2. Not completing required job search activities (3 per week) 3. Reporting earnings incorrectly 4. Having separation issues from your employer that still need adjudication My guess is your claim might be in adjudication for separation issues. Check if there's an "Issues and Decisions" tab in your eServices account that shows any pending issues.

•Thank you, I found the Issues tab and it says "Adjudication in Progress - Voluntary Quit" even though I was laid off! My employer must have reported incorrect information. Now I understand why the weeks are disqualified, but I wish ESD had made that clearer somewhere instead of just approving me then disqualifying everything.

SAME EXACT THING happened to me last month!!! Its SO FRUSTRATING!! They send you a nice letter saying congrats ur approved, then BAM everything is disqualified online. The ESD system is a total mess and nobody tells you whats happening. I spent like 2 weeks trying to get through on the phone.

•Did you ever get it resolved? I'm worried this will drag on for months while bills are piling up.

•Yeah but it took FOREVER. Had to wait for an adjudicator to call me which took like 3 weeks. Then they fixed it and I got backpay for all the weeks. Just keep filing your weekly claims even though they say disqualified!!

I work with unemployment claims frequently, and I can explain what's happening. There are two separate parts to unemployment eligibility: 1. Monetary eligibility - This is what your approval letter confirms. It means you earned enough in your base year to qualify for benefits and establishes your weekly benefit amount. 2. Non-monetary eligibility - This includes things like job separation reason, being able and available for work, and doing job searches. Your claim is likely in adjudication regarding your job separation. If your employer contested your claim or reported you quit (rather than being laid off), ESD must investigate before paying benefits. Your weekly claims will show as "disqualified" until adjudication is complete, but if the decision is in your favor, you'll receive back payments for all weeks claimed. My advice: - Continue filing weekly claims - Check your "Issues and Decisions" section in eServices regularly - Prepare documentation showing you were laid off - Try to contact ESD to explain your situation

After struggling to reach ESD for WEEKS about my adjudication issue, I finally found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes. I was about to give up after trying for days on my own. They have a system that waits on hold for you then calls when an agent is available. It really worked for me when I had a similar issue with my claim showing disqualified despite being approved. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3

•Thanks for the recommendation! At this point I'm willing to try anything to get this resolved. Did the ESD agent you spoke with actually fix your issue right away or did you still have to wait for adjudication?

•The agent was able to see exactly what was happening with my claim and explained the timeline. She also added notes to my file with my side of the story. I still had to wait for adjudication to complete, but at least I understood what was happening and had peace of mind knowing my information was properly documented in the system.

I had this issue in 2024 and found out it was because my former employer contested my claim saying I was fired for misconduct when I was actually laid off due to lack of work. You should check if your employer is contesting your claim. You can also login to your SAW account and look for any letters or notices that might explain the disqualification reason. Sometimes they send letters that don't arrive in the mail but are in your online inbox.

•You're right! I just checked my online inbox and there's a letter there from 5 days ago that never came in the mail. It says they need to determine if I quit voluntarily or was laid off. I need to call them ASAP to explain what happened.

•While the system can be frustrating, adjudication is actually an important legal process to ensure benefits go to eligible claimants. The best approach is to be persistent, keep good records, and continue filing weekly claims while issues are being resolved.

Update: I finally managed to get through to ESD! The agent confirmed what several of you suggested - my employer reported that I quit voluntarily when I was actually laid off in a department restructuring. The agent added detailed notes to my file with my explanation and said an adjudicator will contact me within 2-3 weeks. They recommended I continue filing weekly claims and said if the decision is in my favor, I'll receive back payments for all weeks. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!
