Claim shows 'disqualified' immediately after filing ESD application - can't reach anyone
Super frustrated right now. I just applied for unemployment benefits yesterday after getting laid off from my construction job, and when I logged back in today to check my status, it already says 'DISQUALIFIED' with no explanation! I didn't even get a chance to file my first weekly claim or anything. There's no messages in my ESD inbox explaining why, and I've been calling the customer service number for 3 hours straight but either get disconnected or told the wait time is over 2 hours. Has anyone else had their claim immediately disqualified like this? What could cause this to happen so fast? I worked steadily for the past 18 months and definitely qualify based on their eligibility quiz. Starting to panic since rent is due in 2 weeks...

•Did they send you anything in the mail explaining? I'm checking my online inbox every hour but nothing shows up explaining why I was disqualified.

There are several common reasons why a claim might show 'disqualified' immediately: 1. You might have answered a question that triggered an automatic disqualification (like saying you're not able and available for work) 2. If you have a previous overpayment or penalty on your record 3. If you've already filed a claim in another state 4. If your employer has already contested your eligibility 5. If there's a mismatch between the wages/employers you reported and what's in their system You should receive a letter within 5-7 business days explaining the specific reason. Unfortunately, you'll need to speak with an agent to get this resolved. The disqualification doesn't necessarily mean you won't qualify - it could just be something that needs to be sorted out.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation. I definitely said I was able and available for work, and I've never filed before in any state. My employer actually told me to apply and didn't contest anything. It's probably the wage verification issue then. But waiting 5-7 days for a letter seems crazy when I need to pay rent soon!

the esd system is COMPLETELY BROKEN!!! ive been dealing with them for months and they constantly mess up claims for no reason. they probably flagged your account for "identity verification" like they did to me and 4 of my coworkers when our company downsized. good luck getting through to anyone there - the whole department is understaffed on purpose so they dont have to pay benefits to hardworking people!!!

•I don't think it's quite that conspiratorial. ESD is definitely understaffed, but I've found that most issues can get resolved once you actually reach someone. It's the getting through part that's nearly impossible.

After struggling to reach ESD for two weeks about my disqualification (which was due to a simple birthdate error), I finally used Claimyr to get through to an agent. Literally got connected in 15 minutes after trying for days on my own. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 and their website is claimyr.com. The agent was able to tell me exactly why I was disqualified and fixed it on the spot. Might be worth trying instead of waiting for a letter that might not explain everything.

Check your spam folder for emails from ESD. They often send a disqualification reason via email that can end up filtered. Also, have you verified your identity through ID.me? If not, that's a common reason for automatic disqualification. The system requires identity verification before processing claims further. If it's an identity issue, you'll need to complete that process before your claim can be reconsidered. For wage verification issues, prepare your paystubs from the last 18 months just in case.

•Just checked spam and nothing there. And yes, I did the ID.me verification during the application process - that part showed completed. I have all my paystubs ready to go... just need to actually talk to someone who can tell me what's wrong! This is so stressful.

Since you're facing an urgent situation with rent due soon, I recommend trying these steps: 1. Submit a message through your eServices account specifically asking about the disqualification reason 2. Call right when they open at 8:00 AM (typically lower wait times) 3. Request a call back rather than holding if that option is offered 4. Contact your local WorkSource office - sometimes they can help expedite or provide insights 5. If you received a determination letter (even if it doesn't explain why), look for appeal instructions and file one immediately to protect your rights The disqualification issue is often fixable, but the challenge is connecting with someone who can help. Don't give up!

•Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try calling right at 8am tomorrow. I did send a message through eServices yesterday but no response yet. I didn't know WorkSource might be able to help - I'll check with them too!

I had this exact situation happen to me in January. Turned out there was an issue with my identification verification even though I completed the ID.me process. I eventually got through after 3 days of calling. The agent told me that sometimes their system flags accounts for review when there are similar names in the system (someone with the same name had apparently committed fraud before). Once I got through, they fixed it in about 10 minutes and my status changed from disqualified to pending within 24 hours. Hang in there!

UPDATE: I finally got through! Called 38 times this morning starting exactly at 8:00am. It was an issue with my separation reason - my employer listed me as 'voluntary quit' even though I was laid off. The agent was able to start an investigation and said they'd contact my employer to clarify. My status is now changed to 'pending' rather than 'disqualified.' Thanks everyone for the advice!

•Glad you got through! This is actually a very common issue. Make sure you have any documentation showing it was a layoff (termination notice, emails, texts from your supervisor, etc.). The fact that they changed it from 'disqualified' to 'pending' is a good sign. The employer has a limited time to respond to ESD's inquiry, after which they'll make a determination.
