ESD claim showing 'disqualified' with no explanation - can't reach anyone for help

I filed for unemployment about 2 weeks ago and spent ages making sure I answered everything correctly on the application. But when I check my claim status, it just says 'disqualified' with absolutely no explanation why! I've tried calling ESD at least 15 times over the past week but either get disconnected immediately or sit on hold forever before getting hung up on. I've also sent 3 messages through eServices but haven't heard anything back. My rent is due in 10 days and I'm seriously freaking out. Has anyone else dealt with a random disqualification? Is there any secret way to actually talk to a human being at ESD? This is so frustrating!

There could be several reasons why ur disqualified. Did u check ur correspondence in eServices? Sometimes they send letters explaining why but dont notify u. Also check if u need to verify ur identity thru ID.me - that trips up a lot of ppl. The system is seriously broken.

I checked all my correspondence and there's nothing there explaining it! And I already did the ID.me verification when I first applied and it shows as completed. It's like they just randomly decided NO and won't tell me why.

Check your 'Decisions' tab in eServices - that's usually where disqualification reasons appear. Common reasons include: 1) Not enough work hours in your base year, 2) Voluntarily quitting without good cause, 3) Being fired for misconduct, 4) Not being able and available for work, or 5) Not actively seeking work. If none of those apply to you, it could be a technical error. Unfortunately, reaching ESD is incredibly difficult right now due to high call volumes.

Thank you for this! I checked the Decisions tab and there is a letter there from a week ago that says I was disqualified because I 'voluntarily quit without good cause' - but that's completely wrong! I was laid off when my company downsized. This is insane. Now I need to appeal but I bet that will take forever.

Ugh that's exactly what's happening to me! Did they backpay you once they fixed it? I'm worried about bills piling up while this gets sorted out.

yeah they did backpay eventually but it was super stressful waiting. make sure u keep filing ur weekly claims even while disqualified so u dont miss out when they fix it

I recommend filing an appeal immediately. You have 30 days from the date of the disqualification letter to appeal. Make sure you have documentation from your employer stating it was a layoff (separation letter, emails, etc). The good news is that if you win your appeal, you'll receive all back payments for the weeks you claimed. In the meantime, continue filing your weekly claims even though they'll show as disqualified. This ensures you'll get paid for those weeks once your appeal is successful.

Thank you! I just submitted my appeal through eServices and uploaded my layoff letter. Do you know how long appeals typically take to resolve? I'm getting really worried about finances.

Appeals are currently taking 4-6 weeks to be scheduled. After your hearing, the judge typically issues a decision within 1-2 weeks. It's not quick, unfortunately, but keep filing those weekly claims so you'll get all back payments if you win.

This happened to me too! Except my disqualification was because they said I didn't respond to a questionnaire that I NEVER RECEIVED. The whole system is designed to make you give up. I had to borrow money from family while waiting for my appeal. The worst part was not being able to talk to anyone to explain the situation.

I'm starting to think that's their strategy - make it so impossible to reach them that people just give up. Did you eventually get it resolved?

Yes, finally got it fixed after 7 weeks and multiple appeals. They admitted their error and paid me everything, but those were the most stressful weeks of my life. Keep fighting!

After struggling to reach ESD for weeks about my disqualification, I finally tried a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an ESD agent in under 25 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent was able to see that my employer had incorrectly reported my separation reason and fixed it right there on the phone. My status changed from disqualified to paid the next day. Saved me from having to go through the whole appeal process.

Thank you so much for this suggestion! I'm going to try it right now. If I can get this fixed by talking to someone directly instead of waiting for an appeal, that would be amazing.

The EXACT same thing happened to me last month!!!! My employer coded my layoff as a voluntary quit by mistake. I filed an appeal but also managed to get my former HR department to contact ESD directly to correct their error. That actually worked faster than waiting for the appeal process. Might be worth trying both approaches simultaneously.

That's a great idea! I'm going to reach out to HR tomorrow and see if they can help correct this. Hopefully they'll be cooperative. Thanks for the suggestion!

One more important tip: While waiting for your appeal or correction, make sure you're meeting the job search requirements each week (3 job search activities). Document everything carefully in your job search log. Even though your claims show as disqualified now, if the disqualification is overturned, they'll check that you were meeting all other requirements during that time.

Thank you for the reminder! I've been applying to jobs but wasn't keeping detailed records. I'll start documenting everything properly now.

Will do! I'm going to try multiple approaches - the Claimyr service, contacting HR, and continuing with my appeal. I'll post back when I get some resolution. This community has been so helpful!
