Does Washington ESD contact your new employer when you find work?

I just started a new job after being on unemployment for 8 weeks and I'm worried about what happens next. Do I need to tell Washington ESD immediately? Will they contact my new employer to verify I'm working? I don't want my new boss to think I'm still collecting benefits or anything like that. I filed my last weekly claim on Sunday and reported that I worked 3 days that week. Should I expect Washington ESD to reach out to my employer directly?

You need to report your work immediately when you file your weekly claim. Washington ESD doesn't automatically contact employers unless there's a reason to verify something suspicious. As long as you're honest about your hours and wages, you should be fine.

Thanks! I did report the work on my weekly claim. Just nervous about the whole process.

0 coins

Yeah they only contact employers if something doesn't add up in your claim

0 coins

Washington ESD typically only contacts employers during the initial claim filing process to verify your separation reason, or if there are discrepancies in reported wages. When you return to work, they rely on your weekly claim reporting. Just make sure you accurately report all hours worked and gross wages earned.

0 coins

That makes sense. So as long as I'm reporting everything correctly on my weekly claims, my new employer won't hear from Washington ESD?

0 coins

Correct. They focus their employer contact efforts on claim establishment and fraud prevention, not routine return-to-work situations.

0 coins

I had a similar worry when I started my new job last month. Never heard anything about Washington ESD contacting my employer. The key is just being accurate with your weekly reporting. If you work part-time while collecting, they might eventually do a wage audit, but that's different from contacting your employer about you specifically.

0 coins

Good to know! Did you have any issues with your transition off unemployment?

0 coins

Nope, as long as you report your hours and wages correctly, it's pretty straightforward.

0 coins

Actually had trouble reaching Washington ESD when I had questions about this exact situation. Kept getting busy signals and hung up on. Finally used claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent who explained the whole process. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made it so much easier to get answers about reporting work while on unemployment.

0 coins

Really? I've been trying to call for days with no luck. How does that service work?

0 coins

It basically calls repeatedly for you until they get through to an agent, then connects you. Saved me hours of trying to dial in myself.

0 coins

Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true for dealing with Washington ESD phone lines.

0 coins

Washington ESD is swamped and they're not wasting time calling employers unless they have to. Your new boss won't even know you were on unemployment unless you tell them. Just keep filing your weekly claims accurately until your benefits end.

0 coins

That's reassuring. I was overthinking this whole thing.

0 coins

wait do i need to tell my employer i was on unemployment?? starting a new job next week and didn't even think about this

0 coins

No, you don't have to disclose that to your employer. It's between you and Washington ESD.

0 coins

ok good cause i already accepted the job offer lol

0 coins

The only time I've heard of Washington ESD contacting an employer about someone returning to work is if there's suspected fraud - like if someone reports they're not working but the employer reports they're paying wages to that person. Otherwise they leave employers alone.

0 coins

Makes sense. I'm definitely not trying to commit fraud, just want to make sure I follow the rules correctly.

0 coins

You sound like you're doing everything right. Don't stress about it too much.

0 coins

I've been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and neither time did Washington ESD contact my new employers. They have bigger fish to fry than people who are honestly reporting their return to work.

0 coins

Good to hear from someone with experience. Did you have any issues transitioning off benefits?

0 coins

Nope, just stopped filing weekly claims once I was working full time. Pretty straightforward process.

0 coins

Just make sure you understand the partial unemployment rules if you're working part-time. You can still collect some benefits if you're working reduced hours, but you have to report everything accurately.

0 coins

I'm working full time now, so I think I'm done with unemployment. Just wanted to make sure there weren't any surprises.

0 coins

If you're full time and earning your full wages, then yes, you're probably done collecting benefits.

0 coins

The whole Washington ESD system is set up to catch people who aren't reporting work, not to verify every single person who returns to work honestly. You're overthinking this.

0 coins

You're probably right. I tend to worry about these things too much.

0 coins

THEY DEFINITELY DO CONTACT EMPLOYERS! My friend's boss got a call from Washington ESD asking about her work schedule. Don't listen to these people saying they don't.

0 coins

That was probably related to an initial claim verification or a suspected issue, not routine return-to-work reporting.

0 coins

Maybe but still, they DO contact employers so people should know that

0 coins

There's a difference between contacting employers during claim investigation versus routine benefit transitions.

0 coins

I work in HR and we occasionally get calls from Washington ESD, but it's usually about claim eligibility or separation reasons, not about people returning to work. The state relies on claimants to self-report their work status.

0 coins

That's helpful insight from the employer side. Good to know they're not routinely checking up on people who return to work.

0 coins

Exactly. We're much more likely to hear from them about why someone left their previous job than about someone starting a new one.

0 coins

For what it's worth, when I used that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier, the Washington ESD agent I talked to confirmed that they don't routinely contact new employers. They focus their resources on fraud prevention and initial claim verification.

0 coins

I might need to try that service if I have more questions. The phone lines are impossible.

0 coins

I tried calling Washington ESD for 3 days straight last week. Might have to check out that claimyr thing too.

0 coins

been collecting unemployment for 6 months and just got hired somewhere. worried about the same thing but sounds like as long as i report my work accurately i should be fine

0 coins

That seems to be the consensus. Just be honest about your hours and wages.

0 coins

yeah makes sense. congrats on the new job btw!

0 coins

The Washington ESD website has information about this in their FAQ section. They clearly state that they rely on claimant reporting for work activity. Employer contact is reserved for specific verification needs.

0 coins

I should have checked their website first. Thanks for pointing that out.

0 coins

No problem! Their website actually has a lot of useful information if you can navigate it.

My sister went through this same situation last year. Washington ESD never contacted her new employer. She just stopped filing weekly claims once she was working full time and that was it.

0 coins

Simple as that? I was making this more complicated than it needs to be.

0 coins

Pretty much! The system is designed to rely on your honesty in reporting.

0 coins

I think people get confused because Washington ESD DOES contact employers, but usually it's about the claim establishment process or if there are red flags. Not routine return-to-work situations.

0 coins

That makes the distinction clear. Thanks for explaining it that way.

0 coins

No worries! It's a common source of anxiety for people transitioning off unemployment.

0 coins

Bottom line: report your work accurately on your weekly claims and you'll be fine. Washington ESD has limited resources and they focus them on bigger issues than people honestly returning to work.

0 coins

That sums it up perfectly. I feel much better about this whole situation now.

0 coins

Good luck with the new job! Sounds like you're handling everything the right way.

0 coins

Just remember that if you work part-time, you might still be eligible for partial benefits. Don't assume you have to choose between working and collecting - you can do both legally as long as you report everything.

0 coins

Good point, though I'm working full time now so I think I'm done with benefits entirely.

0 coins

Sounds like it! Congrats on getting back to full-time work.

0 coins

Reading all this makes me feel better. I've been putting off calling Washington ESD because I was worried they'd contact my new employer and make things weird. Sounds like that's not really a concern as long as I'm honest.

0 coins

Same here! This thread has been really helpful for understanding the process.

0 coins

Yeah, definitely reduced my anxiety about the whole thing.

0 coins

If you do need to call Washington ESD, seriously consider that Claimyr service. Saved me so much frustration with their phone system.

0 coins

I went through this exact same worry when I started my new job last fall. Washington ESD never contacted my employer - they really do rely on your weekly claim reporting. The only time I heard from them after starting work was a routine letter confirming my benefit year had ended. As long as you're accurately reporting your hours and wages (which it sounds like you are), your new boss won't hear from them. Focus on your new job and don't stress about this!
