What do I do if I get a job while on unemployment - Washington ESD reporting requirements?

I've been collecting unemployment for about 6 weeks now and just got offered a full-time position that starts Monday. I know I need to report this to Washington ESD but I'm not sure exactly how or when. Do I stop filing my weekly claims immediately? Do I need to call them or can I just update it online when I file my next weekly claim? Also worried about whether I need to pay anything back if there's overlap between my last payment and when I start working. Anyone been through this before?

Ava Kim

Congratulations on the job! You need to report your return to work immediately, don't wait for your next weekly claim. You can do this through your SecureAccess Washington account online or call the claims center. The key is to report the first day you're scheduled to work, not your first day of actual work.

Thanks! So I should report it right now even though I don't start until Monday?

Ava Kim

Yes, report it now. Washington ESD needs to know about your return to work date as soon as you accept the position.

Make sure you file your weekly claim for this week if you haven't already, but mark that you're returning to work. You'll probably get paid for this week since you were still unemployed, but next week's claim should show you're working full-time.

0 coins

That makes sense. I haven't filed for this week yet so I'll make sure to include the return to work info.

i had trouble getting through to washington esd when i got my job back, kept getting busy signals for days. ended up using claimyr.com to get connected - they have this system that calls for you and gets you through to an actual person. there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. made reporting my return to work so much easier than trying to call myself.

0 coins

How much does that cost? Seems like it might be worth it if the phone lines are that bad.

0 coins

It's not expensive and way less frustrating than calling Washington ESD over and over. Plus you get to talk to an actual agent who can make sure everything is reported correctly.

0 coins

The most important thing is accuracy with your dates. If you report your return to work date incorrectly, it can cause overpayment issues later. Washington ESD considers you 'returned to work' on the first day you're scheduled to work, even if that's a future date from when you report it.

0 coins

Good to know. My start date is definitely Monday so I'll make sure to put that exact date.

0 coins

what happens if you mess up the date? asking for a friend...

0 coins

If you put the wrong date, you might get an overpayment notice later. Best to call Washington ESD and correct it as soon as possible if you realize you made an error.

0 coins

Don't forget to keep track of your earnings if this is temporary work or if there's any chance you might become unemployed again. Washington ESD has rules about how much you can earn and still collect partial unemployment benefits if your hours get cut later.

0 coins

It's supposed to be permanent but good point about keeping records just in case.

0 coins

MAKE SURE YOU REPORT THIS IMMEDIATELY! I waited a few days to report my new job and ended up with an overpayment of $800 that I had to pay back. Washington ESD doesn't mess around with this stuff.

0 coins

Yikes! Yeah I'm definitely reporting it today. Don't want to deal with paying anything back.

0 coins

Same thing happened to my cousin, ended up owing like $1200 because she didn't report right away

You can report return to work online through the 'Report Return to Work' option in your eServices account. It's pretty straightforward - just need your employer info and start date. Way easier than calling if you can avoid it.

0 coins

Perfect, I'll look for that option when I log in. Thanks!

0 coins

i couldn't find that option last time i looked, maybe it's under a different menu?

0 coins

It should be on your main unemployment services page. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to show up after you log in.

Just went through this last month. Reported my return to work on a Friday, got one more unemployment payment for that week, then everything stopped automatically. No issues or overpayments. The system works pretty well once you report it correctly.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear it went smoothly for you. Hopefully mine will be the same.

Drake

wait do you have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits? just realized i might owe money come tax time...

0 coins

Yes, unemployment benefits are taxable income. You should have received a 1099-G form from Washington ESD showing how much you received. You could have chosen to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments.

0 coins

Drake

oh no i never chose to withhold taxes... this is gonna be expensive

0 coins

Pro tip: screenshot or save confirmation of when you reported your return to work. If there are any questions later, you'll have proof of when you notified Washington ESD.

0 coins

Great idea! I'll definitely do that when I submit the report.

The washington esd phone system is absolutely terrible. I've been trying to call them for 2 weeks about a different issue and can never get through. Saw someone mention claimyr earlier - might have to try that myself.

0 coins

i used claimyr too when i had adjudication issues, worked great. got through in like 20 minutes instead of calling all day

0 coins

Good to know it actually works. I'm so tired of hanging up and redialing Washington ESD all day.

Make sure your new employer knows you were collecting unemployment. Some employers want documentation of when you stopped receiving benefits for their records.

0 coins

I hadn't thought of that but it makes sense they might want to know.

0 coins

If you're starting a new job, don't forget to update your job search activities too. You won't need to keep doing work searches once you're employed full-time, but make sure your final weekly claim reflects that.

0 coins

Right, I won't need to log job searches anymore once I'm working. Thanks for the reminder.

0 coins

Been collecting unemployment for 8 months now and still no luck finding work. Congrats on getting a job so quickly! Must be nice...

0 coins

Thanks, and I hope you find something soon too. I know how stressful the job search can be.

0 coins

hang in there, took me 10 months but i finally found something. don't give up!

0 coins

One thing to watch out for - if your new job doesn't work out and you need to file for unemployment again, there might be a waiting period depending on why you left. Just something to keep in mind.

0 coins

Hopefully it won't come to that but good to know just in case.

0 coins

The key is just being honest and reporting everything correctly. Washington ESD has access to wage records from employers anyway, so they'll find out if you're working. Better to report it yourself than have them discover it later.

0 coins

Absolutely, I'd rather be upfront about it than risk getting in trouble later.

0 coins

does anyone know if part time jobs have to be reported differently? asking because i might get some side work soon

0 coins

Yes, part-time work is reported differently. You report your gross earnings for the week and Washington ESD calculates if you can still receive partial benefits. There's a formula based on how much you earn versus your weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

ok good to know, i'll make sure to report any earnings accurately

I'm glad I found this thread because I start a new job next week too and wasn't sure about the reporting process. Sounds like I need to report it right away when I accept the offer, not wait until I actually start working.

0 coins

Yeah that seems to be the consensus from everyone here. Better to report early than late.

0 coins

Final tip: keep all your documentation from Washington ESD even after you stop collecting. You never know when you might need to reference your claim history or benefit amounts for tax purposes or future applications.

0 coins

Good advice, I'll make sure to save everything. Thanks everyone for all the helpful information!

This thread has been super helpful. I had no idea about some of these requirements when I got my last job. Luckily nothing went wrong but now I know what to do if it happens again.

0 coins

same here, learned a lot from reading everyone's experiences

Just wanted to add that if you're nervous about reporting online, you can also visit a WorkSource office in person. The staff there can help you report your return to work and make sure everything is filed correctly. Sometimes having someone walk you through it face-to-face can be less stressful than trying to navigate the website or phone system on your own. Plus they can answer any specific questions about your situation right on the spot.

0 coins

That's a great option I hadn't thought of! I'm pretty comfortable with online stuff but it's nice to know there's in-person help available if I run into any issues. Do you know if WorkSource offices have walk-in hours or do you need to make an appointment?

Just to echo what others have said - definitely report it immediately! I made the mistake of waiting until my next weekly claim filing when I got my job back in March, and it created a whole mess with overpayments that took months to sort out. Washington ESD is pretty strict about the timing. The online reporting through SecureAccess Washington is really the easiest way if you can get logged in. And congratulations on the new job - it's such a relief to finally land something after weeks of searching and claiming!

0 coins

Thanks for sharing your experience! It really drives home how important the timing is. I'm definitely going to report it today rather than risk any overpayment issues. It's so helpful to hear from people who have actually been through this process - makes me feel more confident about handling it correctly. And thanks for the congratulations! You're right, it is such a relief after all those weeks of job searching and filing claims.

Just went through this exact same situation last month! You definitely want to report it as soon as possible - I logged into my SecureAccess Washington account the same day I accepted my job offer and used the "Report Return to Work" feature. It was pretty straightforward - just needed my new employer's information and my official start date. The system automatically stopped my weekly claims after that, and I received my final payment for the week I was still unemployed. The key thing is don't wait - Washington ESD considers you "returned to work" from the date you're scheduled to start, not when you actually begin working. Better to report it early than deal with overpayment headaches later. Good luck with the new job!

0 coins

This is exactly the kind of step-by-step guidance I was looking for! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who just went through the same process recently. I was worried about the timing and whether I'd mess something up, but it sounds like the online system makes it pretty clear what to do. I'm going to log in right after I finish reading through all these responses and get it reported today. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience - it definitely helps calm my nerves about the whole process!

This is such valuable information! I'm in a similar situation - been on unemployment for about 3 months and have an interview next week that looks promising. Reading through everyone's experiences here has really helped me understand what I need to do if I get an offer. The main takeaway seems to be report immediately through SecureAccess Washington, don't wait for the next weekly claim, and make sure to use the exact start date. I'm bookmarking this thread so I have all these tips handy if I need them. Thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge - it's going to save me from making costly mistakes!

0 coins

Good luck with your interview next week! It sounds like you've got a solid plan based on everyone's advice here. One thing I'd add is to maybe practice logging into your SecureAccess Washington account now while you're not under pressure, just to make sure you remember your login info and can navigate to the right section quickly if you do get an offer. That way you won't be fumbling around trying to remember passwords or figure out the website when you're excited about a new job. Hope the interview goes well!

Just wanted to share my recent experience with this exact situation! I got a job offer on a Thursday and was panicking about what to do since I'd never had to report returning to work before. I followed the advice to report immediately through SecureAccess Washington rather than waiting for my weekly claim. The "Report Return to Work" option was right there on the main page once I logged in. I entered my employer info and start date (which was the following Monday), and within a few hours I got a confirmation message that my claim was being closed. The whole process took maybe 10 minutes and saved me from any potential overpayment issues. One tip I'd add is to double-check all your employer information before submitting - I almost put the wrong address and caught it at the last second. Also keep that confirmation screen/email as proof you reported on time. Really glad I found similar advice online because the Washington ESD website isn't super clear about the urgency of immediate reporting.

0 coins

This is incredibly helpful - thank you for the detailed walkthrough! I really appreciate you mentioning the confirmation message and keeping it as proof. That's something I definitely wouldn't have thought of but makes total sense for documentation purposes. Your tip about double-checking the employer information is spot on too - I can see how easy it would be to make a typo when you're excited about getting a job offer. It's reassuring to hear the whole process only took 10 minutes once you knew what to do. I'm feeling much more confident about handling this correctly now thanks to everyone's shared experiences in this thread!
