What to do with Washington ESD unemployment when you get a job - need help stopping benefits

I just got hired at a new position starting Monday and I'm not sure what I need to do about my unemployment benefits. I've been collecting UI for about 6 weeks through Washington ESD and filing my weekly claims regularly. Do I need to call them to stop my benefits or just stop filing? I'm worried about getting an overpayment if I mess this up. Also do I need to report this job on my next weekly claim even though I haven't started working yet? Really don't want to accidentally commit fraud or anything.

Congratulations on the job! You need to report this on your next weekly claim filing. There's a specific question about job offers and start dates. Don't just stop filing without reporting the job first or Washington ESD might think you're avoiding reporting work. Once you start working, you'll stop being eligible for benefits.

0 coins

Thanks! So I should still file this week but report the job offer and start date?

0 coins

Exactly. Report it on the weekly claim and they'll adjust your benefits accordingly. Better to over-communicate than under-communicate with Washington ESD.

0 coins

definitely report it on your weekly claim, there's usually a section asking about job offers and when you start work. once you start the job you won't be able to certify as available for work anymore so your benefits will stop automatically

0 coins

Good to know it stops automatically. I was worried I'd have to call Washington ESD to cancel it manually

0 coins

Yeah Washington ESD is pretty good about stopping benefits once you report employment. Just make sure you're honest about your start date.

I had this same situation last year and couldn't get through to Washington ESD on the phone to ask questions. Spent hours trying to call but kept getting the busy signal or got disconnected. Eventually found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get through to an actual person at Washington ESD. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really saved me from stressing about whether I was doing everything right.

0 coins

How does that work? Do they just help you get through on the phone?

0 coins

Yeah they handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Was worth it to get my questions answered properly instead of guessing.

0 coins

never heard of that but sounds helpful. washington esd phone lines are always jammed

0 coins

Make sure you understand the difference between a job offer and actually starting work. If you just got an offer but haven't started yet, you might still be eligible for this week's benefits depending on your start date. Washington ESD looks at when you actually become unavailable for other work.

0 coins

That's a good point. I start Monday so I guess I'm still available for work this week technically?

0 coins

Right, but report the job offer anyway. Washington ESD will make the determination about your eligibility. Better to be transparent.

0 coins

ugh i hate this part of the unemployment system. like why make it so confusing? just got a part time job and had to figure out all this reporting stuff too. seems like they make it complicated on purpose

0 coins

Part-time work is different though - you can sometimes still get partial benefits if you're working under a certain number of hours. Full-time employment usually ends your claim completely.

0 coins

yeah i know just saying the whole system is needlessly complicated for people trying to get back to work

0 coins

The key thing is to file your weekly claim this week and answer all the questions honestly about your job situation. When you start working full-time Monday, you won't be able to certify that you're able and available for work anymore, so your benefits will end naturally. Don't overthink it - just be truthful on your weekly certification.

0 coins

That makes sense. I was overthinking it and worried about doing something wrong.

0 coins

the weekly claims ask pretty specific questions so if you just answer them honestly you should be fine

0 coins

had this happen to me twice. first time i panicked and called washington esd but couldnt get through. second time i just reported it on my weekly claim and everything worked out fine. they stop your benefits automatically once you report full time work

0 coins

Good to hear from someone who's been through it. Did you have any issues with overpayments or anything?

0 coins

nope no issues at all. as long as you report when you start working youre good

0 coins

One more thing to keep in mind - if for some reason the job doesn't work out in the first few weeks, you can potentially reopen your unemployment claim. Don't delete any of your Washington ESD account information or paperwork just yet. Give it at least a month to make sure the job is stable.

0 coins

That's good advice. I hadn't thought about what happens if the job doesn't work out.

0 coins

Yeah keep your Washington ESD login info and don't throw away any unemployment paperwork for a while. Better safe than sorry.

0 coins

also make sure you keep track of your last day of unemployment benefits for tax purposes. youll get a 1099-G form from washington esd next year showing how much you received in unemployment compensation

0 coins

Oh right, taxes. I forgot unemployment is taxable income. Thanks for reminding me.

0 coins

Wait, I'm confused. Do you report job offers or just when you actually start working? I have an interview next week and don't want to mess up my benefits if I get an offer.

0 coins

You report job offers when you get them, especially if you've accepted the offer and have a start date. Just having interviews doesn't affect your benefits.

0 coins

Ok that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying!

0 coins

Actually if anyone else is having trouble reaching Washington ESD about employment questions, I mentioned Claimyr earlier but wanted to add that they were really helpful when I needed to talk to someone about partial work reporting. Sometimes you just need to speak with an actual person to make sure you're doing everything correctly.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost? Worth it if you really need to talk to someone I guess.

0 coins

It was worth it for my peace of mind. Better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected repeatedly.

0 coins

this is why i always screenshot my weekly claim submissions. that way if there are any questions later about when i reported what, i have proof of what i submitted and when

0 coins

Smart idea. I should start doing that too.

0 coins

Documentation is always good when dealing with Washington ESD. Keep records of everything.

0 coins

Congrats on the job! Just to add to what others said - make sure your employer knows you were receiving unemployment benefits if it comes up during onboarding. Some employers ask about it and it's better to be upfront. Nothing wrong with having been on unemployment.

0 coins

Good point. I hadn't thought about whether to mention it to my new employer.

0 coins

I made the mistake of not reporting a job offer once because I thought it might fall through. Got a nasty letter from Washington ESD about it later. Even if you're not sure the job will work out, report it anyway. Better to over-report than under-report.

0 coins

Yikes, what kind of letter? Did you get in trouble?

0 coins

Just a warning letter asking why I didn't report it, but it was stressful. Had to explain the situation and provide documentation. Not worth the hassle.

0 coins

honestly the washington esd weekly claim questions are pretty straightforward. they ask about work, job offers, availability, etc. just answer them truthfully and youll be fine. the system is designed to catch these transitions

0 coins

Yeah I think I was overthinking it. The questions do seem pretty clear when I think about it.

0 coins

One thing that helped me was reading through the Washington ESD handbook on their website. Has a whole section about returning to work and what you need to report. Might be worth checking out if you want all the details in writing.

0 coins

I'll look that up. Always good to have the official information.

0 coins

The handbook is actually pretty helpful. Much clearer than trying to interpret the weekly claim questions.

0 coins

just wanted to say good luck with the new job! its always nerve wracking starting somewhere new but youll do great. and dont stress too much about the unemployment stuff - sounds like you have good advice here

0 coins

Thanks! Yeah everyone here has been really helpful. Feeling much better about the whole process now.

0 coins

To summarize for the OP: file your weekly claim this week, report your job offer and start date, then once you start working full-time you won't be eligible for benefits anymore. Washington ESD will handle stopping your claim automatically. Keep your records and don't stress about it - you're doing the right thing by asking questions.

0 coins

Perfect summary. Thanks to everyone who helped me figure this out. Really appreciate all the advice!

0 coins

No problem! Always happy to help someone navigate the Washington ESD system. It can be confusing but you've got it handled.

0 coins

Actually one more thing - if you're starting a job that might have a probationary period, you might want to ask Washington ESD about that too. Some people keep their claim open during probation just in case, but I'm not sure what the rules are on that.

0 coins

Generally once you start full-time work, your claim ends regardless of probationary periods. If you get let go during probation, you'd need to reopen your claim or file a new one.

0 coins

Makes sense. Better to deal with that if it happens rather than try to keep benefits active while working.

0 coins

For anyone else reading this thread who needs to talk to Washington ESD about work-related questions, I'll mention Claimyr one more time. Really helped me when I was confused about partial work reporting. Their service connects you with Washington ESD agents without the usual phone hassles. Check out claimyr.com if you're having trouble getting through.

0 coins

That actually sounds really useful. I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about a different issue.

0 coins

Yeah it saved me a lot of frustration. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get things sorted out properly.
