Washington ESD - what to do when you get a job on unemployment benefits
Got hired yesterday and start Monday! Super excited but also worried about messing up my unemployment claim. I've been on Washington ESD benefits for about 6 weeks and finally landed something. Do I need to call them right away or can I just report it on my next weekly claim? Don't want to get in trouble for not reporting work income properly. Also wondering if I should file one more weekly claim for this week since I haven't started working yet?

Congratulations on the job! You'll report your new employment when you file your weekly claim. Make sure to report your gross earnings for any week you work, even if it's just a few days. Washington ESD needs to know about all work activity and income.

•Thanks! So I should still file this week's claim since I haven't started working yet, right?

•Exactly. File for this week since you were still unemployed and looking for work. Then next week report your work hours and earnings.

•Perfect, that's what I was thinking but wanted to make sure!

Make sure you understand how Washington ESD calculates partial benefits. If you work part-time, you might still be eligible for some unemployment benefits. They have a formula based on your weekly benefit amount and earnings. Keep filing weekly claims as long as you're working less than full-time hours.

•It's a full-time position, so I'm guessing my benefits will stop completely once I start working?

StarStrider
•Yes, if you're working full-time you won't be eligible for benefits. But keep filing weekly claims until your benefits officially end - Washington ESD will determine when to close your claim.

•Wait, I thought you had to call Washington ESD when you get a job? I've been trying to reach them for weeks about my claim issues.

I was in the same boat last month when I got hired. Couldn't get through to Washington ESD on the phone to ask questions. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an actual agent to clarify the reporting process. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Really saved me the headache of calling repeatedly.

•Is that legit? I've been calling Washington ESD for three weeks straight with no luck.

•Yeah, it's real. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Worth it when you actually need to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

ALWAYS report work immediately! The worst thing you can do is not report income. Washington ESD will find out eventually through quarterly wage reports from employers and then you'll have an overpayment to deal with.

Mateo Martinez
•Good point, I definitely don't want to deal with overpayment issues down the road.

•happened to my brother - he forgot to report some part time work and ended up owing like $800 back to Washington ESD

•Thanks! It's in marketing. Don't give up, it took me almost 2 months but something finally came through.

One important thing - make sure you keep records of your job search activities up until you start working. Washington ESD requires you to maintain your job search log right up until you begin employment. Don't slack off on that requirement just because you got hired.

Mateo Martinez
•Oh good point, I hadn't thought about that. I'll make sure to log my activities through this week.

•Wait, do you have to keep doing job search activities even after you accept a job offer but before you start?

Aisha Hussain
•Yes, you're still considered unemployed until you actually start working, so all requirements apply including job search activities.

Question about this - if you work just one day in a week, do you report the full week as working or just that one day? I'm confused about how Washington ESD wants part-time work reported.

StarStrider
•You report the specific days you worked and your gross earnings for that week. So if you only worked Monday, you'd report 1 day worked and whatever you earned that day.

•Thanks, that makes sense. I was overthinking it.

Still trying to get through to Washington ESD about my claim that's been in adjudication for a month. Anyone else having issues reaching them by phone lately?

•I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier - worked for me when I needed to check on my claim status. Saved me hours of calling.

•Might have to try that, I'm getting desperate here.

Make sure when you report your work income that you use your GROSS pay, not net. A lot of people make that mistake and it can cause issues with their claim calculations.

Mateo Martinez
•Good reminder, I'll make sure to use the gross amount before taxes and deductions.

does washington esd automatically close your claim when you start working full time or do you have to do something?
0 coins
StarStrider
•They'll close it automatically once you report full-time work for a few consecutive weeks. You don't need to do anything special to close it.

Congrats OP! I remember when I got my first job after being on unemployment - such a relief. Just be honest about everything when you file your weekly claims and you'll be fine.

Mateo Martinez
•Thank you! Yeah, it's definitely a huge relief. Looking forward to having a steady paycheck again.

One thing to watch out for - if your new job doesn't work out and you need to file for unemployment again, there might be a waiting period. Just something to keep in mind, hopefully you won't need it!

Mateo Martinez
•Hopefully not, but good to know just in case. Thanks for the heads up.

•Yeah, if you quit or get fired for misconduct you might not be eligible right away. But if you get laid off you should be fine.

I'm so jealous! Been on Washington ESD benefits for 4 months now and still nothing. What industry is hiring?

•Don't give up! I applied to probably 50+ places before getting this one. Marketing seems to be picking up, also saw a lot of customer service and healthcare jobs posted.

•Thanks for the encouragement, I needed that today.

Quick question - when you report work income, does it have to be reported the week you earned it or the week you got paid? I always get confused about this timing.
0 coins
Aisha Hussain
•Report it for the week you performed the work, not when you received payment. So if you worked Monday-Friday, report it for that week even if you don't get paid until the following week.

•Perfect, that's what I thought but wanted to double check.

Washington ESD's website has a pretty clear explanation of how to report work and earnings. Check the 'File Weekly Claim' section - it walks you through exactly what to report and when.

Mateo Martinez
•I'll check that out, thanks for the tip!

Used Claimyr myself when I had questions about reporting work income while on standby status. Really helped me get through to someone at Washington ESD who could explain the rules clearly.

•What's standby status? I keep seeing that term but don't understand what it means.

Miguel Diaz
•It's when you're temporarily laid off but expect to return to the same job within a certain timeframe. Different rules apply for job search requirements.

Bottom line - just be honest and report everything accurately. Washington ESD isn't trying to trick you, they just need accurate information to process your claim correctly.

Mateo Martinez
•Absolutely, honesty is definitely the best policy when dealing with unemployment benefits.
