What do you do with Washington ESD unemployment when you get a job - stop filing?
I just got hired for a new position that starts Monday and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with my unemployment claim. Do I just stop filing my weekly claims or do I need to notify Washington ESD somehow? I've been collecting UI benefits for about 6 weeks and don't want to mess anything up or accidentally commit fraud. The job is full-time so I definitely won't be eligible for any more benefits. What's the proper process here?

Congratulations on the new job! You need to file one final weekly claim for the week you started work and report your first day of work on that claim. Don't just stop filing without reporting the job - Washington ESD needs to know when your unemployment ended.

•Thanks! So I file this week's claim and mention that I started work on Monday?

•Exactly. Report the start date and any wages earned that week. After that claim is processed, you're done filing unless you become unemployed again.

Make sure you report it correctly or they'll flag your account for potential overpayment. I've seen people get in trouble for not reporting work properly.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about! I don't want to accidentally do something wrong.

•The system is pretty straightforward - just answer honestly about when you started work and how much you earned. Washington ESD would rather have accurate information than none at all.

I had this same situation last year. You file your final weekly claim reporting your start date, then you're done. Don't overthink it - the system handles the rest automatically once you report employment.

•Did you have any issues with your final claim or did it process normally?

•Processed fine. Took about a week to show up in my account as usual, then my claim status changed to inactive.

Actually had trouble reaching Washington ESD when I needed to clarify this exact situation. The phone lines were constantly busy and I was getting stressed about filing correctly. Found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Turns out I was overthinking it but was glad to talk to someone directly.

•How much does something like that cost? I might need to talk to someone too.

•It's worth checking out their site for details. For me the peace of mind was worth it since I was worried about messing up my claim status.

•Never heard of that service but interesting. Did they actually get you through to Washington ESD or just help with the process?

•They got me connected to an actual Washington ESD agent who confirmed exactly what I needed to do. Saved me hours of trying to call on my own.

wait do you have to report it if you only worked one day that week? I got a job on Friday but wasn't sure if I should report it on my weekly claim

•Yes, you report any work regardless of how many days. Even one day of work needs to be reported on your weekly claim.

•ok good to know, I'll make sure to report it when I file tomorrow

The whole system is confusing but basically you just answer the questions honestly when you file your weekly claim. There's usually a question about starting work and you put in the date and wages.

•Yeah that makes sense. I'm probably overthinking this whole thing.

•Most people do overthink it. The weekly claim questions are designed to catch all the important changes in your situation.

Don't forget to keep your job search log updated until your claim is officially closed. I made that mistake and had to scramble to reconstruct my job search activities when they asked for it later.

Mia Alvarez
•Good point! I'll keep tracking my activities until I'm sure the claim is closed.

•Actually once you report starting full-time work, you usually don't need to continue job search activities. But keeping records doesn't hurt.

Congrats on the job! Make sure you keep documentation of your start date and first paycheck just in case Washington ESD needs verification later. Better to have it and not need it.

•Great advice, I'll definitely keep my hiring paperwork and first paystub.

I remember being so nervous about this same thing. The key is just being honest and reporting everything accurately. Washington ESD isn't trying to trick you - they just need to know when your unemployment ended.

•That's reassuring. I think I'm just nervous because I've never been on unemployment before.

•Totally understand! It's a new process for everyone the first time. You're doing the right thing by asking questions.

The Washington ESD website has a section about returning to work that explains this process. Might be worth checking out if you want official guidance.

Had a similar situation and used Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD to confirm the process. Really helped ease my anxiety about doing it wrong. The agent walked me through exactly what to report and when.

•You're probably right, I'm just being overly cautious since it's my first time dealing with this.

One thing to keep in mind is that if your new job doesn't work out, you can usually reopen your claim without having to go through the whole application process again. Just something to be aware of.

Mia Alvarez
•That's good to know! Hopefully I won't need that information but it's reassuring.

•Exactly right. As long as you properly closed your claim by reporting work, you can reopen it if needed within a certain time period.

I was in your exact situation a few months ago. Filed my final weekly claim on Sunday, reported my Monday start date, and that was it. No issues at all.

Make sure you file that final claim even if you forget at first. I missed filing for two weeks after starting work and had to call Washington ESD to straighten it out. They were understanding but it was an unnecessary hassle.

•Good reminder! I'll make sure to file this Sunday like I normally would.

•This is where Claimyr really helped me too - when I had questions about missed filings. Much easier than trying to get through on the regular phone lines.

The most important thing is just being honest about your employment status. Washington ESD deals with people starting new jobs all the time - it's a normal part of the process.

Mia Alvarez
•That makes sense. I guess I'm just nervous because I've never been through this before.

•Completely understandable! But you're asking the right questions and being proactive about doing it correctly.

Just wanted to add that you should receive some kind of confirmation or notice from Washington ESD after your claim is closed. Don't panic if it takes a few days to show up in your account.

•Thanks for the heads up! I'll keep an eye out for that confirmation.

Honestly the whole process is pretty straightforward once you do it. Just answer the weekly claim questions truthfully and you'll be fine. Congrats on the new job!

Congratulations on landing the new job! I went through this exact same process a few months ago and was just as nervous about doing it right. The key thing is to file your weekly claim for the week you start work and honestly report your start date and any wages earned. Washington ESD actually makes it pretty straightforward - there will be specific questions about returning to work that you just answer truthfully. Don't stress too much about it, you're clearly being responsible by asking these questions upfront. The system is designed to handle people transitioning back to work all the time. Just make sure you keep records of your start date and first paycheck in case they ever need verification later. Good luck with the new position!
