PSA for anyone reading this thread: if you're going to be traveling over Memorial Day weekend, make sure you're still in Washington state when you file your weekly claim. Being out of state can complicate your unemployment eligibility.
The rules about travel and unemployment are so confusing. I've been afraid to leave the state at all since I started claiming.
Bottom line from all these responses: Memorial Day won't stop you from filing your weekly claim, but it might delay your payment by a day and you won't be able to reach customer service if you have issues. Plan accordingly and file early if you're worried about any complications.
The hardest part for me was understanding the difference between gross and net benefits. They calculate based on gross wages but your weekly benefit is what you actually receive (before taxes if you choose to withhold).
One more tip - if you have any issues with your payments or account, document everything. Date, time, who you talked to, what they said. It'll save you headaches later if something goes wrong.
Good luck with your claim! It's definitely possible to get both benefits, just takes patience with the system.
One last tip - if you do get approved for unemployment, make sure you're meeting all the weekly claim requirements. Missing a week can mess up your whole claim.
And if you ever have issues with your weekly claims or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, remember that Claimyr service I mentioned. Really saves time and frustration.
It's actually pretty cool to think about how the unemployment system evolved from basically nothing in 1933 to what we have now with Washington ESD's online weekly claims and job search tracking.
Right? It's amazing how far the system has come. Though from reading this forum, it sounds like there are still plenty of challenges with the current system.
good luck with your project! hope you find what you need and also get your unemployment claim sorted out if that's still an issue

Just to add my experience - I worked part-time for about 6 months while collecting partial unemployment. As long as you're honest about reporting and keep looking for full-time work, it's actually a pretty good system. Helps bridge the gap financially.

•That's encouraging to hear! I'm hoping this part-time job leads to something full-time eventually.

•Same here, been doing part-time work for 4 months now and it's definitely helped with the bills while I keep job hunting.

Bottom line: report all your earnings honestly, understand that you'll get dollar-for-dollar deductions after the first $5, and you can earn up to 1.5x your weekly benefit amount before losing benefits entirely. The system actually works pretty well once you understand it.
