For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD with questions about benefit amounts or eligibility, I really can't recommend Claimyr enough. The video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ shows exactly how it works, and their website claimyr.com has more info. It's been a game-changer for people I know who needed to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD.
Just wanted to add that even in low unemployment periods, people still lose jobs due to company closures, layoffs, seasonal work ending, etc. The individual circumstances matter way more than the overall economic picture.
Thanks everyone for helping me understand this better. I was definitely overthinking the economic angle when the real issue is just getting my layoff verified. I uploaded all my documentation this morning and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
And if you don't hear anything in 2 weeks, definitely follow up. Sometimes things get stuck in the system.
Will do. If I can't get through by phone I'll try that Claimyr service you all mentioned.
One thing to watch out for - if you had any pension or retirement account withdrawals in the past year, that might affect your benefit calculation. Washington ESD counts certain types of retirement income when determining your weekly amount.
Just wanted to add that once you do find out your weekly benefit amount, that's the maximum you can get each week. If you work part-time while on unemployment, they'll reduce your weekly payment based on how much you earn. It's not dollar for dollar though - there's some formula they use.
Quick tip: when you report your severance on your weekly claim, make sure you report it in the week you actually received it, not spread out over multiple weeks (unless that's actually how you received it). The timing of when you report it matters for their records.
Bottom line from someone who's been through this twice - file your unemployment claim as soon as you're laid off, regardless of severance. Report the severance honestly but don't let it stop you from filing. Better to ask forgiveness than permission with Washington ESD timing rules.

Just wanted to add that if your child support order changes while you're on unemployment, it can take a few weeks for Washington ESD to update their records. I had to call multiple times to get the new amount processed correctly.

•How did you finally get through to someone who could help with that?

•Honestly, I ended up using one of those callback services after weeks of trying. Sometimes you just need to get creative when the normal phone system isn't working.

This whole thread is making me realize I need to double-check my own situation. I thought my support was being handled correctly but now I'm not so sure.

•Always good to verify. Check your DCS account online and compare it to what's actually being deducted from your UI benefits.
