From my experience dealing with Washington ESD, they seem more focused on processing claims than actually reducing unemployment. Which I guess makes sense since that's their main job when unemployment is high.
I think the real answer is that keeping unemployment low is everyone's responsibility, but the Federal Reserve probably has the biggest single impact through monetary policy. State agencies like Washington ESD are more about managing the effects of unemployment rather than preventing it.
Has anyone tried the Claimyr service for other Washington ESD issues besides benefit calculations? I'm having problems with my weekly claim certification.
The most important thing is getting your initial claim filed correctly. The percentage calculation happens automatically once Washington ESD processes your wage information from employers.
If you run into any issues or need to speak with Washington ESD directly, I'd recommend using Claimyr. I used it when I had questions about my specific situation and it worked great. Much better than spending hours on hold.
A couple people have mentioned Claimyr now. I think I'll check it out if I run into problems.
The bottom line is this: file your claim now while you're still able to work. Deal with future changes when they happen. You're overthinking it and potentially missing out on benefits you're entitled to.
One last thing - make sure you understand the difference between FUTA taxable wages and regular wages for other payroll taxes. Some things that are subject to federal income tax withholding might not be subject to FUTA.
Thanks everyone for the help! This thread has been really informative. I feel much more confident about handling FUTA deposits now. And I'm definitely going to check out that Claimyr service for when I need to call government agencies - seems like it could save a lot of time and frustration.

I tried using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked! Got through to a Washington ESD rep in 2 days instead of the weeks I'd been trying. They explained my benefit calculation and where the funding comes from. Worth checking out if you need to talk to them.

•Yeah, the regular phone system is just impossible. This at least gives you a real chance of getting through.

Bottom line: unemployment benefits are insurance, not welfare. Your employer paid premiums, you earned eligibility through work, and you're collecting insurance when you lose your job. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about using insurance you earned.
