just remember that even if you lose the appeal you might be able to set up a payment plan instead of paying the whole amount at once. washington esd is usually willing to work with people on repayment terms. but definitely try the appeal first since you might not owe anything at all
I won my overpayment appeal last year and the biggest thing that helped was getting a phone call with Washington ESD first to understand exactly what they thought I did wrong. Once I understood their reasoning, I could address it directly in my appeal letter. That Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier sounds like it could be really helpful for getting through to talk to someone.
Yeah, I think I'm going to try that service this week. Getting actual details about what they think I did wrong would definitely help me write a better appeal.
The whole system would be so much easier if they just had better customer service and clearer information. Most of the confusion comes from not understanding the process.
Thank you everyone for all the helpful info! I feel much more confident about the process now. Going to set up those notifications and make sure I understand the job search requirements too.
Quick update - I actually just got off the phone with Washington ESD (used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it worked great). The rep confirmed that I should file a claim and they'll investigate the work classification. She said to be thorough in describing how my work was structured and provide as much documentation as possible.
One last tip - when you're filling out your claim, there should be a section where you can explain your work situation in detail. Use that space to describe how your client controlled your work, provided equipment, set schedules, etc. Don't just rely on the basic form fields.
If you do end up needing to contact Washington ESD during the process and can't get through on the phone, I had good luck with Claimyr recently. They helped me reach an adjudicator when my quit claim was stuck in review. Way better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected.
Good luck with whatever you decide. Just remember that unemployment benefits are temporary - try to line up your next job as quickly as possible even if you do qualify. The job market is still pretty competitive right now.

The whole system is set up to discourage people from applying. Half the time they deny claims hoping people won't appeal. Don't let them intimidate you - you have rights as someone whose school closed unexpectedly.

•Thanks for the encouragement. I was starting to feel like maybe I didn't deserve benefits since I was technically a student.

•You absolutely deserve benefits if you meet the qualifications. The fact that you were bettering yourself through education shouldn't be held against you.

One last tip - when you do get through to Washington ESD, ask them to put notes in your file about the school closure and your eligibility. That way if other agents review your case later, they'll understand the situation without you having to explain it again.

•That's really smart. I'll make sure to ask for that when I talk to someone.

•Also get the name and ID number of whoever you talk to. Sometimes it helps to reference specific conversations if issues come up later.
