Make sure you understand the partial unemployment rules too. If you're working part-time while claiming benefits, they reduce your weekly amount but you might still get something even if you work a little.
Last thing I'll add - make sure you file your initial claim as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. You can't get retroactive benefits for weeks before you file, even if you were eligible.
For what it's worth, I think the average is probably around 3-4 weeks for most people. The horror stories get more attention but plenty of claims get processed smoothly. Just keep filing weekly and stay responsive to any requests from Washington ESD.
Just want to add that if you get denied for any reason, don't panic. You can appeal the decision and many appeals are successful. I got initially denied but won my appeal after providing additional documentation.
Final reminder - file your claim as soon as possible, be completely honest and accurate with all information, keep detailed records of everything, and stay on top of your weekly filings and job search requirements. You'll be fine.
And remember services like Claimyr exist if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. Don't spend weeks banging your head against the wall like I did.
I used Claimyr when I had questions about partial unemployment while dealing with a medical condition. The agent was really knowledgeable about the rules around work restrictions and helped me understand my options. Worth the cost to get accurate information instead of guessing.
Whatever you decide, make sure you understand the appeal processes for both programs. Disability has multiple levels of appeals, unemployment appeals are more limited. Plan for the possibility of initial denial with either one.

Don't forget that if you acquire a business, you might inherit their FUTA experience rating. Same thing can happen with Washington ESD unemployment tax rates. Due diligence should include checking their tax compliance history.

•Good point, though I'm starting from scratch so that shouldn't apply to me.

•Right, just something to keep in mind if your business grows through acquisitions later.

Bottom line: FUTA is federal, Washington ESD taxes are state, you need both, and the rules are different for each. Get professional help if you're unsure - the penalties for getting it wrong are not worth the savings on accounting fees.

•Especially as your business grows, the complexity increases. Better to have expert help from the start than try to fix problems later.

•Agreed. The time you spend trying to figure this out yourself is usually worth more than professional help costs.
