My advice is to apply for disability as soon as possible if your doctor thinks you should. The process takes so long that the sooner you start, the better. You can figure out the unemployment stuff as you go.
Make sure you get copies of all your medical records before you apply. Social Security will want everything and it's easier if you have it organized ahead of time.
The key thing is to file consistently and on time. I set a reminder on my phone for every Sunday at 5pm to file my weekly claim.
Bottom line: Washington ESD processes payments Tuesday/Wednesday for claims filed by Sunday. Your bank might add another day or two. Plan accordingly and don't panic if it's a day late.
Good luck with your application! The Washington ESD system has improved a lot over the years. Most people get through the process without major issues as long as they follow the instructions and stay on top of their weekly claims.
One last tip - if you do need to call Washington ESD and are having trouble getting through, try calling right when they open or during lunch hours. Those tend to be less busy times. But honestly, that Claimyr service others mentioned sounds like a much better option than trying to get through yourself.
Thanks for the timing tip! I'll keep that in mind if I need to call. And yes, several people have mentioned Claimyr - definitely seems like a useful resource to know about.
IMPORTANT: Make sure you file your claim as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. You can't get benefits for weeks before you actually file, even if you were eligible during those weeks.
Just remember that unemployment benefits are temporary. In Washington you can typically get up to 26 weeks of benefits, though this can vary based on the unemployment rate and other factors.

One more thing to remember - if you do find work before your benefits run out, you might be able to use the remaining balance later if you become unemployed again within the same benefit year.

•Really? I didn't know that. So the weeks don't just disappear if you find a job?

•Correct, as long as you're still within your benefit year period. But you'd need to meet all the eligibility requirements again.

Thanks everyone for all this info. Feeling a bit more informed about how the system works now. Still stressful knowing there's a deadline but at least I understand the rules better.
