What's the most you can get from Washington ESD unemployment benefits weekly?

I'm trying to figure out if it's even worth filing for unemployment since I was making decent money at my last job. Does anyone know what the maximum weekly benefit amount is in Washington? I've been looking at the Washington ESD website but can't find a clear answer about the highest amount they'll pay out. My gross income was around $85k last year so I'm wondering if I'd qualify for the max or if there's a cap that would make it not worth the hassle.

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington is $999 per week as of 2025. But you have to have earned enough in your base period to qualify for that max amount. It's based on your highest earning quarter during your base period.

So with my $85k salary I should qualify for close to that max? That would actually be worth filing for then.

0 coins

Probably, but Washington ESD calculates it based on quarterly earnings, not annual. You'd need to have earned at least $24,975 in your highest quarter to get the full $999.

i think the max is like $900 something but dont quote me on that, my cousin got laid off from boeing and hes getting around $800 a week

0 coins

It's actually $999 now, they increased it this year. Your cousin might not be getting the max because his base period earnings weren't high enough.

0 coins

You should definitely file if you made $85k. The calculation is 3.85% of your total base period wages divided by 52, but capped at $999. You'll also get the additional $25 per week if you have dependents. Just be prepared for the application process - Washington ESD is swamped and it can take weeks to get approved.

0 coins

Weeks to get approved? That's concerning. I need income coming in soon or I'll be in trouble with bills.

Same boat here. I filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything back from Washington ESD. Can't get through on the phone either.

Try using Claimyr if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. It's a service that helps you get through their phone system - saved me hours of calling. Check out claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

The max is $999 but good luck actually getting it processed quickly. I've been waiting 6 weeks for my claim to get out of adjudication. Washington ESD is a complete joke.

0 coins

6 weeks in adjudication?? That's insane. What's holding it up?

0 coins

They say they need to verify my employment history but won't tell me what specifically they need. I've submitted everything they asked for twice.

0 coins

Just filed last week and wondering the same thing. My W2 shows $78k for last year. Should I expect close to the max benefit amount?

0 coins

It depends on how your earnings were distributed across quarters. If you made most of that in one quarter, you'd get more than if it was spread evenly.

0 coins

I had steady employment all year, so it was pretty evenly distributed. Probably around $19-20k per quarter.

0 coins

Wait, is the $999 before or after taxes? Because if they're taking out taxes that changes everything.

0 coins

That's the gross amount before taxes. You can choose to have federal and state taxes withheld or pay them later when you file your return.

0 coins

Ok good to know. I'd rather have them take it out now than get hit with a big tax bill later.

0 coins

I got the max last year when I was laid off from Amazon. But the catch is you only get it for 26 weeks max unless they extend benefits. And you have to do job searches every week which is annoying.

0 coins

How many job searches do you have to do per week? I heard it was 3 but someone told me it might be more now.

0 coins

It's 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking events, job fairs, etc. Just keep good records because they do audit.

0 coins

Does anyone know if the maximum changes each year? I swear it was lower when my brother filed a couple years ago.

0 coins

Yes, it gets adjusted annually based on average wages in the state. It was $929 in 2024 and $999 now in 2025.

0 coins

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for MONTHS and they just hang up on me. How is anyone supposed to actually get their benefits?

0 coins

I feel your pain. The phone system is terrible. Have you tried calling right at 8am when they open?

0 coins

YES! I call at exactly 8am and still can't get through. It's like they have 2 people answering phones for the entire state.

0 coins

Try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier. I just signed up and it actually got me connected to a real person at Washington ESD. Worth checking out if you're desperate like I was.

Quick question - if I made $90k but it was from two different jobs during the year, does that affect the maximum benefit calculation?

0 coins

No, it doesn't matter how many employers you had. They look at your total wages from all employers during your base period quarters.

0 coins

honestly the max benefit isnt even that much when you think about it. $999 a week is only like $52k a year if you got it for the full year which you dont

0 coins

True but it's better than nothing when you're unemployed. And it gives you time to find something decent instead of taking the first minimum wage job you can find.

0 coins

I'm confused about the base period thing. Is that the last 4 quarters before I filed or the last calendar year?

0 coins

It's the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. So if you file in January 2025, your base period would be January 2024 through September 2024.

0 coins

That's confusing but thanks for explaining. So recent earnings might not even count?

0 coins

My claim got approved for $847 a week. Not the max but pretty good. Took about 4 weeks total from application to first payment.

0 coins

4 weeks isn't too bad I guess. Did you have to do anything special to speed it up?

0 coins

Not really, just made sure I had all my employment info ready and responded quickly when they asked for documents.

0 coins

Does the max benefit amount include the federal add-on or is that separate? I remember during COVID there was extra money.

0 coins

The $999 is just the state maximum. There's no federal add-on anymore - that ended in 2021. You might get an extra $25 for dependents though.

0 coins

Just wanted to update - I used Claimyr after seeing it mentioned here and finally got through to Washington ESD. Turns out my claim was stuck because they needed me to verify my identity. Got it sorted out in one phone call. Sometimes you just need to actually talk to a human.

0 coins

Good to hear! I'm definitely going to try that if I run into issues with my application.

0 coins

How much does Claimyr cost? Is it worth it?

0 coins

For me it was worth it just to save the time and frustration. Check their website for current pricing - claimyr.com

0 coins

One thing to remember is you have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits. A lot of people forget that and get surprised come tax time.

0 coins

Yeah I learned that the hard way. Owed like $3000 in taxes because I didn't have anything withheld.

0 coins

So if the max is $999 and I was making $2000 a week at my job, unemployment is going to be a huge pay cut. Might not even be worth filing.

0 coins

It's still free money while you look for work. Even if it's less than you made, it helps cover basic expenses and you're paying into the system anyway through taxes.

0 coins

Good point. I guess something is better than nothing while I job hunt.

0 coins

The application process seems really complicated. Do I need to gather a bunch of documents before I start?

0 coins

You'll need your Social Security card, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including dates and wages. Having your W2s or pay stubs helps too.

0 coins

Bottom line - if you made good money, you'll probably get close to the max. Just be patient with the process and make sure you keep doing your weekly claims even if your initial claim is still processing.

Thanks everyone! This thread has been super helpful. I'm going to file this week.
