Washington ESD maximum unemployment benefit 2024 - how much can I expect?

I'm planning to file for unemployment soon and trying to figure out my finances. Does anyone know what the maximum weekly benefit amount is for Washington ESD in 2024? I've been making around $75k annually and want to know if there's a cap on how much I can receive. Also wondering how they calculate the benefit amount - is it based on your highest earning quarter or something else?

The maximum weekly benefit amount for Washington ESD in 2024 is $999 per week. Your benefit amount is calculated based on your earnings in your base year, which is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim. They look at your two highest earning quarters and use a formula to determine your weekly benefit amount.

Thanks! So with my salary I should qualify for close to the maximum then. Do you know if that $999 includes the additional federal funding or is that just the state portion?

0 coins

That's just the state portion. There's no additional federal funding right now like there was during the pandemic. The $999 is what you'd get from Washington ESD directly.

0 coins

Just to add to what was said above - you need to have earned at least $8,100 during your base year to qualify for any benefits at all. The minimum weekly benefit amount is $295. Your benefit amount is roughly 3.85% of your total base year wages, but it can't exceed that $999 maximum.

0 coins

Wait, so if I made $100k last year I'd still only get $999 max? That seems like such a small percentage of what I was making.

0 coins

Unfortunately yes, that's correct. Unemployment benefits are designed to be temporary income replacement, not full salary replacement. The $999 max hasn't changed in a few years either.

I've been struggling to get through to Washington ESD to ask about my benefit calculation. Been calling for weeks but either get disconnected or can't get past the automated system. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

0 coins

I had the same problem for months! Finally found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It actually got me connected to someone who explained my benefit calculation in detail.

0 coins

Interesting, I'll have to check that out. I'm so tired of waiting on hold for nothing.

0 coins

The whole system is such a joke. I made $80k and I'm getting like $650 a week. Meanwhile I know people who barely worked getting almost the same amount. The calculation makes no sense to me.

0 coins

The calculation is actually pretty straightforward once you understand it. It's based on your base year earnings, not your most recent salary. If you had a lower earning period during your base year, that could affect your benefit amount.

0 coins

I guess that makes sense. I did have a job change in the middle of last year where I was unemployed for a couple months.

0 coins

Just remember you'll owe taxes on unemployment benefits. That $999 isn't what you'll actually take home. Make sure to either have taxes withheld or set money aside for tax season.

0 coins

Good point! I forgot unemployment is taxable income. Do you know what percentage they typically withhold?

0 coins

I think it's 10% federal if you choose to have it withheld. Washington doesn't have state income tax so you don't need to worry about that part.

0 coins

Does anyone know if the maximum benefit amount ever gets adjusted for inflation? $999 doesn't go as far as it used to with everything being so expensive now.

0 coins

The legislature has to approve any changes to the maximum benefit amount. It's not automatically adjusted for inflation like some other programs. There have been discussions about increasing it but nothing concrete yet.

0 coins

That's frustrating. Everything else keeps going up in price but the safety net stays the same.

Update: I tried that Claimyr service and it actually worked! Got connected to a Washington ESD agent within 20 minutes instead of waiting hours on hold. They explained exactly how my benefit amount was calculated and why it was lower than I expected. Turns out I had some quarters with lower earnings that brought down my average.

0 coins

Glad it worked for you! I've recommended Claimyr to several people now and they've all had good experiences getting through to Washington ESD.

0 coins

This sounds too good to be true. How much does this service cost?

0 coins

It's worth it for the time saved alone. I was spending hours every day trying to call Washington ESD and getting nowhere.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for the info! I think I have a better understanding now. Sounds like I should qualify for close to the maximum since I've had steady high earnings. Just need to actually file the claim now.

0 coins

Make sure you have all your employment information ready when you file. You'll need dates of employment, employer names and addresses, and reason for separation for each job in your base year.

0 coins

Good to know. I'll gather all that info before I start the application process.

0 coins

I filed last month and my benefit amount was way less than expected even though I made good money. Turns out there was an issue with how my employer reported my wages. Had to contact them to get it corrected.

0 coins

That's a common issue. Washington ESD can only work with the wage information they receive from employers. If there are discrepancies, you have to get them resolved through your former employer first.

0 coins

Yeah, it was a pain but worth fixing. My benefit amount went up by about $200 per week once they corrected the wage information.

0 coins

For anyone wondering about the exact calculation, it's: (Sum of wages in your two highest earning quarters) ÷ 2 ÷ 13 = weekly benefit amount. But like others said, it can't exceed $999 or be less than $295.

0 coins

That's really helpful! I can actually calculate my expected benefit amount now before I file.

0 coins

Thanks for the formula! I was wondering how they came up with my specific amount.

0 coins

Just a heads up - if you're getting the maximum benefit amount, you'll probably hit your maximum benefit year total pretty quickly. Washington ESD typically gives you 26 weeks of benefits, so $999 x 26 = about $26,000 total for the year.

0 coins

That's not very much when you think about it. Definitely need to find a new job as quickly as possible.

0 coins

Exactly. Unemployment is meant to be temporary assistance, not long-term income replacement. The sooner you can find work, the better.

0 coins

I remember when I filed during COVID the maximum was lower than $999. When did they increase it to the current amount?

0 coins

The maximum benefit amount has been adjusted several times over the years. The current $999 maximum has been in place for a while now, but I'd have to look up the exact date it was implemented.

0 coins

No worries, I was just curious. It's definitely higher than what I got a few years ago.

0 coins

Don't forget about the work search requirements if you're getting benefits. You need to be actively looking for work and document your job search activities.

0 coins

Good reminder! I'll need to start keeping track of my job applications and interviews.

0 coins

Yeah, Washington ESD requires at least 3 job search activities per week. Make sure you're logging everything in your online account.

0 coins

For anyone still having trouble reaching Washington ESD with questions about their benefit calculation, I'll mention Claimyr again. I used it twice now and both times got connected to knowledgeable agents who could access my account and explain everything clearly. Really saved me a lot of frustration.

0 coins

I might have to try that. I've been trying to get clarification on my benefit amount for weeks.

0 coins

Definitely worth it. Check out their demo video to see how it works - the link is https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

0 coins

The $999 maximum sounds good until you realize how expensive everything is in Washington. My rent alone is $2,400 a month so unemployment barely covers half of that.

0 coins

I feel you. I'm in Seattle and unemployment doesn't come close to covering my living expenses. Really puts pressure on finding a job quickly.

0 coins

Exactly. I might have to look at getting a temporary job while I search for something in my field.

0 coins

Just want to confirm - the $999 is the gross amount before taxes, right? So the actual amount you receive will be less?

0 coins

Correct. If you choose to have federal taxes withheld, they'll take out 10%. So you'd actually receive about $899 per week.

0 coins

Thanks for clarifying. I was wondering why my friend's deposit was less than what she expected.

0 coins

Has anyone had success appealing their benefit amount calculation? I think Washington ESD might have made an error with my wages but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle to appeal.

0 coins

You can definitely appeal if you think there's an error. First step is to contact Washington ESD and ask them to review your wage information. If that doesn't resolve it, you can file a formal appeal.

0 coins

Good to know. I'll try contacting them first to see if they can explain the calculation.

0 coins

If you can't get through to them by phone, you might want to try Claimyr to connect with an agent who can review your account.

This thread has been super helpful! I was dreading trying to figure out how much I'd get on unemployment but now I feel like I understand the system better.

0 coins

Same here! Really appreciate everyone sharing their knowledge and experiences.

0 coins

Happy to help! The Washington ESD system can be confusing but once you understand the basics it makes more sense.
