What's the max weekly unemployment benefit amount in Washington ESD right now?
I'm getting ready to file for unemployment and trying to figure out what I can expect financially. Does anyone know what the maximum weekly benefit amount is for Washington ESD in 2025? I was making around $75k annually and want to know if I'll qualify for the max amount or something less. Also wondering if there are any other factors that affect how much you get besides your previous wages.

The maximum weekly benefit amount for Washington unemployment is $999 per week as of 2025. This is based on your highest earning quarter from your base period, so if you were making $75k you should qualify for close to the maximum depending on how your earnings were distributed throughout the year.

•Thanks! That's higher than I expected. Do you know how they calculate it exactly?

•They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then that's your weekly benefit rate up to the $999 max.

•I had the same problem last month! Couldn't get through on the phone at all. What worked for me was using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they actually got me connected to a Washington ESD agent within like 20 minutes. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•Try calling right when they open at 8am, that's when I finally got through

The $999 maximum is correct for 2025. However, your actual benefit amount depends on your base period wages. Washington ESD looks at the first four of the last five completed quarters before you file your claim. Your weekly benefit amount is calculated as your highest quarter wages divided by 26, but it cannot exceed the state maximum of $999.

•So if my highest quarter was around $20k, I'd get about $769 per week?

Jessica Suarez
•Exactly right! $20,000 divided by 26 equals approximately $769 per week.

I'm confused about the base period thing. When I filed in January 2025, which quarters do they look at? And what if I just started working in 2024?

•For a claim filed in January 2025, your base period would be October 2023 through September 2024. If you don't have enough wages in that period, they might use an alternate base period.

•Oh no, I only started working in March 2024. Does that mean I won't qualify?

•You might still qualify under the alternate base period, which would be January 2024 through December 2024. Contact Washington ESD to check your eligibility.

Anyone know if the $999 includes the extra federal money or is that just the state portion?

Jessica Suarez
•The $999 is just the regular state unemployment benefit. There's no federal supplement right now like there was during COVID.

•Okay good to know, thanks for clarifying that

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! I've been waiting 6 weeks for my claim to get approved and they keep asking for more documentation. Meanwhile I'm behind on rent and bills. The $999 max doesn't matter if you can't actually GET the money!

•I feel you on this. The adjudication process is a nightmare right now.

•Have you tried reaching out through Claimyr? I used them when my claim was stuck in adjudication and finally got answers about what documents they needed.

•Never heard of that, what is it exactly?

For what it's worth, I qualified for the full $999 per week when I was laid off last year. The process wasn't too bad once I got through the initial filing. Just make sure you have all your employment history ready.

•How long did it take to get your first payment?

Hunter Brighton
•About 3 weeks from when I filed, but that was because I had a small issue they needed to verify

i think the max used to be lower like $800 something? when did it go up to $999

•Washington adjusts the maximum benefit amount annually based on average wages. It's been increasing over the past few years.

•Yeah it was $929 in 2024 I think, so $999 is the new amount for 2025

Does anyone know if part-time workers can get the full amount? I was working 30 hours a week at a pretty good hourly rate.

•Your benefit amount is based on total wages earned, not whether you worked full-time or part-time. So if your quarterly wages were high enough, you could potentially get the maximum.

•That makes sense, thanks!

Quick question - is the $999 before taxes or after? Do they take out taxes automatically?

Sophia Carson
•The $999 is before taxes. You can choose to have federal and state taxes withheld from your benefits, or you can pay them when you file your tax return.

•I'd recommend having them withhold taxes. Otherwise you might owe a big chunk at tax time.

This might be a dumb question but do you get the same amount every week or does it change?

Jessica Suarez
•Your weekly benefit amount stays the same throughout your benefit year, unless you have earnings from part-time work that reduce your benefits for that week.

•Got it, that's helpful to know for budgeting purposes

I was making $85k and only got $847 per week. The calculation isn't always straightforward especially if your income varied a lot between quarters.

•Interesting, that's less than the maximum even with a higher salary than mine

Nina Fitzgerald
•Yeah my income was really uneven because of commission, so my highest quarter wasn't as high as you'd expect

For anyone still having trouble getting through to Washington ESD - I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked. Got connected to an agent who explained exactly how my benefit amount was calculated. Worth checking out if you're stuck.
