How do I receive unemployment benefits in Washington state - complete beginner

I've never filed for unemployment before and honestly have no idea where to start with receiving benefits. I got laid off from my retail job last week and my friend said I should apply for unemployment but I'm completely lost. Do I just go to a website? Do I need to bring documents somewhere in person? How long does it take to get approved and start receiving money? I'm really stressed about paying rent next month so any help would be appreciated.

You'll need to file your initial claim online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. You can't do it in person anymore - everything is online now. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment information from your last job including dates worked and reason for separation.

Thank you! Do I need to know my exact start and end dates or can I estimate?

0 coins

Try to be as accurate as possible. Check your paystubs or ask HR for exact dates if you can.

After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. The weekly claim is basically confirming you're still unemployed and actively looking for work. Most people file on Sundays for the previous week.

What happens if I miss filing a weekly claim?

0 coins

You can usually file it late but you might not get paid for that week. Don't make it a habit.

0 coins

I missed one week and had to call Washington ESD to get it sorted out. Took forever to get through on the phone.

The job search requirement is 3 job contacts per week in Washington state. You need to keep a log of where you applied, when, and how you applied. Washington ESD can audit this at any time so keep good records.

0 coins

Do I start the job search immediately or after I get approved?

0 coins

Start immediately. The requirement begins the week you file your claim.

Getting through to Washington ESD by phone is absolutely horrible if you need help. I spent weeks trying to reach someone about my claim status. Finally found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

Is that legit? Seems too good to be true.

0 coins

Yeah it's real. They basically call for you and get you connected to an actual person at ESD. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

0 coins

I used them too when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Worth every penny.

Your weekly benefit amount depends on how much you earned in your base period. Washington ESD looks at the highest quarter of earnings in your base period and calculates from there. Most people get between $300-800 per week but it varies.

0 coins

What's a base period? Is that just my last few months of work?

0 coins

It's the first 4 quarters of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. So if you file in January 2025, your base period would be October 2023 through September 2024.

0 coins

make sure you have all your info ready when you file online because the system times out if you take too long. happened to me twice before i got it submitted

0 coins

How long do you have before it times out?

0 coins

i think like 20 minutes or something. just have everything written down first

0 coins

After you file your initial claim, it can take 2-3 weeks to get your first payment if everything goes smoothly. Sometimes claims get sent to adjudication which can delay things by several more weeks. Adjudication happens when ESD needs to verify information or investigate something about your claim.

0 coins

What would cause my claim to go to adjudication?

0 coins

Common reasons are quit vs. fired disputes, questions about your availability to work, or if you received severance pay.

0 coins

My claim has been in adjudication for 6 weeks now. It's ridiculous.

You'll receive benefits on a debit card called the KeyBank Way2Go card. It usually arrives within 7-10 business days after your first payment is issued. You can also set up direct deposit but the card comes automatically.

0 coins

Can I use the debit card anywhere or are there restrictions?

0 coins

You can use it anywhere Visa is accepted. Just watch out for ATM fees if you need cash.

0 coins

Don't forget you have to report ANY income you earn while collecting unemployment, even if it's just a few hours of work. This includes gig work, freelancing, odd jobs, everything. Report it on your weekly claim.

0 coins

What if I only make like $50 doing DoorDash or something?

0 coins

Report it. Washington ESD will reduce your weekly benefit but you might still get partial unemployment.

0 coins

Make sure you're actually eligible before filing. You need to have worked enough hours and earned enough wages in your base period. There's an eligibility tool on the ESD website that can give you an estimate.

0 coins

I worked full time for about 8 months at my last job. Should that be enough?

0 coins

Probably, but check the tool to be sure. You need at least 680 hours in your base period.

0 coins

if your claim gets denied dont give up!! you can appeal the decision. i got denied first time because they said i quit but i was actually fired. appealed it and won

0 coins

How long does the appeal process take?

0 coins

took about 2 months for me but i heard it can be longer depending on how backed up they are

0 coins

Another thing about Claimyr - I used them when I couldn't figure out why my weekly claims weren't going through. Turns out there was a technical issue with my account that only an ESD agent could fix. Would have taken me forever to get through on my own.

0 coins

How much does that service cost?

0 coins

I'd rather not say the exact amount but it was worth it to get my benefits flowing again. Check their website for current pricing.

0 coins

The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely broken. I've called hundreds of times and either get hung up on or sit on hold for 3+ hours. The system is designed to discourage people from calling.

0 coins

Is there a best time to call?

0 coins

People say early morning right when they open but honestly I never had luck. That's why I ended up using Claimyr.

0 coins

I got through once at 7:58am right before they opened. But it took like 50 tries over two weeks.

0 coins

You might want to sign up for WorkSourceWA too. It's the state's job search website and sometimes ESD requires you to use it. Better to have an account set up early just in case.

0 coins

Is that different from just looking for jobs on Indeed or other sites?

0 coins

It's the official state job board. Your job search contacts through WorkSourceWA count toward your weekly requirement.

0 coins

Whatever you do, don't lie on your application or weekly claims. Washington ESD will catch it eventually and you'll have to pay back everything plus penalties. They cross-reference with employment records.

0 coins

What if I make an honest mistake on my weekly claim?

0 coins

Honest mistakes can usually be corrected. It's intentional fraud they go after hard.

0 coins

the whole system is a nightmare honestly. took me 3 months to get my first payment and by then i was already behind on everything. just be prepared for it to take way longer than they say it will

0 coins

That's terrifying. I really need this to work out quickly.

0 coins

sorry to scare you but just being realistic. maybe you'll get lucky and have no issues

0 coins

To summarize for OP: 1) File initial claim online at esd.wa.gov, 2) File weekly claims every week, 3) Do your job search (3 contacts per week), 4) Keep detailed records, 5) Be patient because it takes time. Most people do eventually get their benefits but the system is slow and frustrating.

This is super helpful, thank you everyone! I'm going to file my claim tonight.

0 coins

Good luck! Come back and update us on how it goes.

0 coins

One more tip - take screenshots of everything when you file your claims. Sometimes the system glitches and you need proof that you submitted something on time.

0 coins

Smart idea. I'll definitely do that.

0 coins

Also save all your confirmation numbers and emails from ESD. You'll need them if there are any issues later on.

0 coins

Will do. Thanks again everyone!

0 coins

good luck op!! the first few weeks are the hardest while you're waiting and figuring everything out. once you get in the routine it gets easier

I really appreciate all the support from everyone here. This forum is amazing.
