How to get unemployment money in Washington - complete beginner here
I just lost my job last week and I'm completely lost on how to get unemployment money. I've never filed for unemployment before and I have no idea where to start. Do I need to go somewhere in person? Is there paperwork? How long does it take to get approved? I'm really stressed about paying my rent next month and could use some guidance on the whole process.

You need to file your claim online through Washington ESD's website at secure.esd.wa.gov. Don't wait - you should apply as soon as possible after losing your job. The process is all online now, no need to go anywhere in person.

•Thanks! Do I need any specific documents or information before I start the application?

•Yes, have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months ready. You'll also need your employer's contact information and the reason you were separated from your job.

The online application takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. Make sure you have accurate dates and wages for all your jobs in the past year and a half. Any mistakes can delay your claim.

•This is so important! I made a typo in my start date and it held up my claim for weeks.

•Good to know - I'll double check everything before submitting.

After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. You can't skip weeks even if you haven't heard back about your initial claim approval yet.

•How do I file the weekly claims? Is that online too?

•Yes, also through the Washington ESD website. You'll report any work you did that week and any wages you earned. Even if you worked zero hours, you still need to file.

Just a heads up - if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim, the phone lines are absolutely brutal. I spent weeks trying to get through. Recently found out about this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me. I was able to get through and resolve an issue with my job search requirements that I'd been trying to fix for weeks.

The waiting period can be nerve-wracking. For regular unemployment benefits, you might get paid within 2-3 weeks if everything goes smoothly, but it can take longer if your claim goes into adjudication.

•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

•It's when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim - like the reason you left your job or if there are questions about your eligibility. It's not necessarily bad, just means they need more information.

•My claim went into adjudication and took 6 weeks to resolve. Just be patient and respond quickly to any requests for information.

Don't forget about the job search requirements! You need to make at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log of everything you do.

•What counts as job search activities?

•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, creating or updating your resume, taking online courses related to your field. You track it all in WorkSourceWA.

Make sure you're actually eligible first. You need to have worked enough hours and earned enough wages in your base period. Washington ESD will calculate this based on your employment history.

•How do I know if I've worked enough? I was at my last job for about 8 months.

Evan Kalinowski
•Generally you need to have earned at least $1,000 in your base period and worked in at least two quarters. 8 months should be fine if you were working regular hours.

•I know right? The navigation is terrible. Look for 'Apply for Benefits' on the main page.

One thing to remember - unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them when you file your tax return next year.

Mason Kaczka
•I didn't even think about taxes! Should I have them withheld?

Oscar Murphy
•It's usually easier to have them withheld so you don't get hit with a big tax bill later. You can change this setting anytime in your account.

The system is SO much better now than it was during COVID. Back then the website would crash constantly and nobody could get through on the phone for months.

•Oh god yes, those were dark times. At least now the website actually works most of the time.

•That's reassuring to hear it's improved!

Pro tip: Set up direct deposit right away. Paper checks take forever to arrive and can get lost in the mail.

•Can I set that up during the initial application?

•Yes, there's a section for banking information. Have your routing and account numbers ready.

If you get denied for any reason, don't panic. You can appeal the decision. I got initially denied because of a clerical error and the appeal process fixed it.

•How long does the appeal process take?

Daniel Washington
•Mine took about 4 weeks. You have 30 days from the denial notice to file an appeal, so don't wait if you think the decision was wrong.

Another vote for that Claimyr service mentioned earlier. I was having issues with my weekly claims getting stuck and couldn't reach anyone at Washington ESD for weeks. Used their service and got connected to an agent the same day who fixed my problem in 10 minutes.

•That's amazing. I've been trying to call for 2 weeks about my adjudication status with no luck.

•Definitely try it. The phone system at Washington ESD is just overwhelmed but this service somehow gets you through.

Just remember to keep checking your SecureAccess Washington account regularly. They'll send you messages there about your claim status, requests for additional information, and important updates.

•Is that the same login I use for filing claims?

Charlotte White
•Yes, same account. Check it at least weekly, even after you start receiving benefits.

The whole process seems overwhelming at first but it's really not that bad once you get started. Just take it step by step and don't stress too much about making it perfect.

One last thing - keep records of everything! Save copies of your application, print out confirmation pages, and keep track of all your job search activities. You never know when you might need to reference something.
