How do you file for unemployment with Washington ESD - completely lost here
I just lost my job yesterday and everyone keeps telling me I need to file for unemployment but I have no idea where to even start. Do I go to an office somewhere or is it all online? What information do I need to have ready? I've never done this before and I'm honestly kind of panicking about how I'm going to pay my bills next month. Any help would be really appreciated.

You file online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months (dates, employer names, addresses), and your driver's license or state ID. The process takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready.

•Thank you! Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after losing my job or can I file right away?

Nia Jackson
•You can file immediately - actually you should file as soon as possible because there's a one-week waiting period before benefits start, and the sooner you file the sooner that week starts counting.

Make sure you have your reason for separation ready to explain clearly. If you were laid off, fired, or quit makes a big difference in whether you'll qualify. Also gather any documentation you have like your final paycheck stub or termination letter.

•I was laid off due to budget cuts, so I think that should be okay right?

•Yes, layoffs due to budget cuts typically qualify for unemployment benefits. That's considered separation through no fault of your own.

Just a heads up - the Washington ESD phone system is absolutely terrible if you need to call them. I spent weeks trying to get through when I had issues with my claim. If you run into problems, there's actually a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that can help you get through to an actual person at ESD. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Really? How does that work exactly? I'm already dreading having to call them if something goes wrong.

•They basically handle the calling for you and get you connected to an actual ESD representative. Saved me so much frustration when my claim got stuck in adjudication.

ugh the whole process is such a pain. took me like 2 hours to get through it all because i kept having to look up old employer info. make sure you have addresses and phone numbers for every job you've had

One important thing - after you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. These are usually available on Sunday and you need to file by the following Saturday. Don't forget to do this or you'll miss out on benefits for that week.

Luca Romano
•What do I need to report on the weekly claims?
0 coins
Nia Jackson
•Whether you worked that week, how much you earned if you did work, and your job search activities. You'll need to show you're actively looking for work.

Be prepared for the job search requirements too. In Washington you need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of what you did. They can audit this at any time.

•What counts as a job search contact? Just applying for jobs?
0 coins
Yuki Ito
•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, informational interviews, even attending WorkSourceWA workshops. They have a list on their website of what qualifies.

Don't stress too much about the initial application. The hardest part is just getting started. The Washington ESD website actually walks you through it step by step pretty well.

•That's reassuring, thank you. I'm going to try to file tonight when I get home.

Make sure your claim doesn't get stuck in adjudication like mine did. Three weeks of waiting with no explanation. The system is so broken.

Luca Romano
•What's adjudication? Should I be worried about that?

Andre Dupont
•It's when they need to review your claim for some reason. Sometimes it's random, sometimes there's an issue with your separation or work history. Just pray it doesn't happen to you.

•That's exactly when I used Claimyr - when my claim was stuck in adjudication for weeks. Finally got through to someone who could explain what was happening.

You'll probably get a determination letter in the mail within a week or two after filing. Keep an eye out for that - it'll tell you if you're approved and how much your weekly benefit will be.

Luca Romano
•How do they calculate how much I'll get?
0 coins
QuantumQuasar
•It's based on your earnings in your base period, which is usually the first four of the last five completed quarters before you filed. The maximum weekly benefit in Washington is around $999 right now.

Pro tip: set up your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account before you start the unemployment application. You'll need it to access your claim online later anyway.

Luca Romano
•What's SAW?

Zoe Papanikolaou
•It's Washington state's secure login system. You use it to access your unemployment account, file weekly claims, and check your payment status.

Remember to keep track of all your job search activities from day one. Use a spreadsheet or notebook to log company names, dates, positions applied for, and contact information. Trust me, you don't want to try to recreate this from memory later.

Luca Romano
•Good idea. I'll start a spreadsheet right away.

If you have any issues with your claim, don't wait around hoping it'll fix itself. The sooner you address problems, the better. And yeah, calling ESD is a total nightmare but sometimes you just have to do it.

•That's why services like Claimyr exist - because calling ESD directly is so frustrating. I wish I'd known about it sooner.

Luca Romano
•I'm bookmarking that Claimyr site just in case I need it later.

Also make sure you understand the difference between able and available. You have to be both to qualify for benefits each week. Able means physically and mentally capable of working, available means you're not doing anything that would prevent you from accepting a job.

Luca Romano
•So if I go on vacation I need to report that?
0 coins
Giovanni Mancini
•Yes, if you're out of town and not available for work, you need to report that on your weekly claim. You might not be eligible for benefits that week.

Don't forget to register with WorkSourceWA too. It's required for most unemployment claimants and they have job search resources that can help.

Luca Romano
•Is that a separate website or part of the unemployment system?
0 coins
NebulaNinja
•It's a separate site - worksourcewa.com. You'll need to create a profile there and keep it updated with your resume and job search activities.

The good news is that once you get through the initial setup, the weekly claims are pretty quick - usually just takes a few minutes each week.

Luca Romano
•That's a relief. I was worried it would be complicated every week.

Just remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income, so you might want to have taxes withheld or set aside money for tax time. You can choose to have federal taxes withheld when you file your claim.

Luca Romano
•Oh I didn't think about taxes. Thanks for mentioning that.

You've got this! It seems overwhelming at first but thousands of people go through this process every week. The Washington ESD website has good instructions and there are resources available if you get stuck.

One last thing - make sure you read all the notices and letters you get from ESD carefully. They often contain important information about your claim status or things you need to do.

Luca Romano
•Will do. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to help me out.
