Where do I go to file for unemployment in Washington state?
I just got laid off yesterday and have no idea where to start with filing for unemployment benefits. Is there a specific office I need to visit or can I do this online? I'm completely lost and need to get this process started ASAP since I have bills due next week. Any help would be appreciated!

You file online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. Click on 'File a Claim' and it will walk you through the whole process. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names and addresses.

•Thank you! Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after losing my job or should I file right away?

Lena Schultz
•File as soon as possible! Your claim starts the week you file, not the week you lost your job. Don't wait.

You can file online at esd.wa.gov - it's actually way easier than going to an office. The whole application is digital now and you can do it from home. Just make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history ready.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or anything like that when I apply?

Mohamed Anderson
•Nope, you don't need pay stubs for the initial application. Washington ESD will verify your wages with your employer directly.

You need to go to the official Washington Employment Security Department website at esd.wa.gov. That's the only legitimate place to file your unemployment claim in Washington state. Don't use any third-party sites that might charge you fees.

•Thank you! I was getting confused because I saw so many different sites when I googled it.

•yeah there's lots of fake sites out there trying to charge people, stick with the official .gov site

The website is secure.esd.wa.gov/home/ - make sure you're on the official site. There are some fake sites out there that try to steal your info.

The online system is pretty straightforward but make sure you have all your employer info ready before you start. You'll also need to register with WorkSource Washington as part of the process. It's all connected through the same system.

Caesar Grant
•What's WorkSource Washington? Is that separate from the unemployment filing?

Gemma Andrews
•It's the job search requirement system. You have to register there and do job searches every week to keep getting benefits. It's required unless you're on standby with your employer.

Just went through this myself last month. The hardest part was actually getting through to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions. Their phone lines are constantly busy and you get disconnected all the time. I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to an actual agent - check out claimyr.com if you need to talk to someone. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service. Is it legit or just another scam?

Pedro Sawyer
•It's legit - they basically handle the waiting on hold for you and call you back when they get an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration.

•Good to know there are options if I can't get through! Hopefully I won't need to call them but this is helpful.

•Washington ESD will verify your wages through their system, but it's good to have your pay stubs handy in case there are any discrepancies.

File online for sure. I went to a WorkSource office thinking I had to do it in person and they just told me to use the website anyway. Save yourself the trip.

•WorkSource is different from Washington ESD anyway. WorkSource helps with job searching, Washington ESD handles the unemployment claims.

Make sure you file as soon as possible! There's a waiting period before you can start receiving benefits, and it doesn't start until you actually submit your claim. I made the mistake of waiting a week and lost out on that week of benefits.
0 coins
Luca Greco
•Good to know, I'll file today then. How long does the whole process usually take?

Carmen Ruiz
•If everything goes smoothly, you should get your first payment within 2-3 weeks. But if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason, it can take much longer.
0 coins
Andre Lefebvre
What's adjudication? That sounds scary.
0 coins
Nia Thompson
•Adjudication is when Washington ESD needs to review your claim for some reason - could be a question about why you left your job, conflicting information, or just a random review. Most claims go through without any issues.
0 coins
Andre Lefebvre
•Oh okay, that makes sense. Thanks for explaining!

Make sure you understand the difference between filing your initial claim and filing your weekly claims. You file the initial claim once, then you have to file weekly claims every week to actually get paid. Don't miss a week or you lose benefits for that week.
0 coins
Caesar Grant
•How do I file the weekly claims? Same website?
0 coins
Beatrice Marshall
•Yes, same site. You log into your account and file your weekly claim every Sunday. It asks about work you did that week and if you were available for work.
0 coins
Mohamed Anderson
Pro tip: file your claim as soon as possible. Your benefit year starts the week you file, not when you lost your job. So don't wait around.
0 coins
Selena Bautista
•Wait really? I thought it would backdate to when I got laid off.
0 coins
Mohamed Anderson
•Nope, that's a common misconception. Washington ESD benefits start from your filing date, so time is money here.
0 coins
Zane Gray
•This is wrong actually. You can get benefits backdated up to one week before you file if you meet certain conditions.

I filed online last month and it was actually pretty easy. Just take your time filling it out and double-check everything before you submit. The website walks you through each step.

Don't forget you'll need to file weekly claims too once your initial claim is approved. You have to certify every week that you're still unemployed and looking for work.
0 coins
Luca Greco
•How do I do the weekly claims? Is that on the same website?
0 coins
Jamal Anderson
•Yes, same website. You'll get instructions after your claim is processed. You have to do it every week to keep getting benefits.

ugh the whole system is so confusing when you're already stressed about losing your job. took me forever to figure out what they wanted from me
0 coins
Caesar Grant
•That's exactly how I'm feeling right now. Did you eventually get it figured out?
0 coins
Melina Haruko
•yeah eventually but it took like 3 weeks to get my first payment because i messed up some of the initial info

Lena Schultz
One thing to be aware of - your claim might go into adjudication if there are any questions about your separation from work. This means they need to investigate before approving your claim. It can add several weeks to the process.
0 coins
Caesar Grant
•What would cause it to go into adjudication? I was laid off due to company downsizing.
0 coins
Lena Schultz
•Layoffs are usually straightforward, but they might still need to verify with your employer. Just be completely honest about everything and you should be fine.

•My claim was in adjudication for 6 weeks! They said they were verifying my work history but never told me what the holdup was.

Don't forget you might be able to get your claim backdated if you file within a certain timeframe. I think it's like 28 days but double check that.
0 coins
Caesar Grant
•What does backdating mean exactly?
0 coins
Reina Salazar
•It means they can start your claim from when you actually became unemployed instead of when you filed, so you don't lose those weeks of benefits.

PRO TIP: Screenshot everything! Save confirmation numbers, print out your claim summary, keep records of everything. The system glitches sometimes and you'll want proof of what you submitted.

Make sure you have a SAW account set up first - that's SecureAccess Washington. You need it to access the unemployment system.
0 coins
Selena Bautista
•What's SAW? Is that different from the Washington ESD website?

Maggie Martinez
•SAW is the login system Washington state uses for all their online services. You create one account and use it for unemployment, licensing, taxes, everything.

The job search requirements are pretty strict too. You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of your activities. Don't slack on this because they do check.
0 coins
Liam McGuire
•What counts as a job search contact? Just applying for jobs?

•Applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, even some online training courses can count. There's a list on the Washington ESD website of approved activities.

ugh the whole process is such a pain. took me forever to figure out all the acronyms and stuff. UI this, SAW that, adjudication whatever. just file online and hope for the best lol

Just to add - if you were fired or quit your job, make sure you understand how that affects your eligibility. Washington ESD will investigate the circumstances and you might need to provide documentation.

•Yes, layoffs are usually the most straightforward. Just make sure you have any paperwork from your employer about the layoff.

Make sure you understand the waiting week requirement. You might not get paid for your first week even if you're eligible.
0 coins

•Most states have a waiting week but I think Washington eliminated theirs. You should still check though.

One more thing - if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, you might need to file an interstate claim. The system will tell you if that applies to you.
0 coins
Caesar Grant
•I've only worked in Washington so that shouldn't apply to me.

One more tip - create your account on the website before you actually need to file. The system can be slow during busy times and you don't want to deal with technical issues when you're already stressed about losing your job.

Also be prepared for the ID verification process. Washington ESD has gotten really strict about identity verification lately. You might need to upload documents or even do a video call to prove who you are.
0 coins

•Usually driver's license, Social Security card, and sometimes additional documents like utility bills or bank statements.

0 coins
Romeo Barrett
•How much does that cost? Seems sketchy to pay someone to make phone calls for you.

Been through this process twice now and online filing is definitely the way to go. Just make sure you have all your employer information handy - names, addresses, dates of employment, reason for separation.
0 coins
