Where can I file for unemployment in Washington - lost my job yesterday
Got laid off yesterday and I'm completely lost. Where exactly do I go to file for unemployment benefits? I've never done this before and don't even know where to start. Is there a physical office I need to visit or can I do this online? Really need to get this process started ASAP since I have bills coming due.

Everything is done online now through the Washington ESD website. Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'File a Claim' button. You'll need to create an account through SecureAccess Washington (SAW) first if you don't already have one.

•Thank you! Do I need any specific documents ready before I start the application?

•Yes, have your Social Security card, driver's license, and employment info for the last 18 months ready. Also your bank account info for direct deposit.

filed mine last week, the website is esd.wa.gov/unemployment/file-a-claim - pretty straightforward but takes about 30-45 minutes to complete everything

•How long before you heard back from them about approval?

•Still waiting actually, they said it could take up to 10 business days but some people are waiting longer

The Washington ESD moved everything online during COVID and never went back to in-person filing. The process is actually pretty efficient once you get started. Make sure you file your claim as soon as possible since benefits can only be backdated to the week you file, not when you lost your job.

•Oh wow, I didn't know about the backdating thing. Good thing I'm starting this today!

Just a heads up - if you have trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone to ask questions, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real person. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Was a lifesaver when I had questions about my claim status.

•Interesting, I'll keep that in mind if I run into issues. Hopefully the online filing goes smoothly though.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to them.

•I get the frustration, but honestly after spending hours trying to call myself, it was worth it just to get answers quickly.

Quick tip - when you're filling out the application, be super accurate with your employment dates and wage information. Any discrepancies can trigger an adjudication process that delays your claim for weeks.

•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

•It's just when they need to verify information manually. Usually happens if there's conflicting data between what you report and what your employer reported.

•been in adjudication for 3 weeks now, it's awful 😞

also make sure you understand the weekly claim filing requirement - you have to certify for benefits every week even if you haven't been approved yet

•Wait, I have to do something every week? I thought it was just a one-time application.

•nope, every week you have to log in and answer questions about whether you worked, looked for work, etc. Usually takes like 5 minutes

Don't forget about the job search requirements either. Washington requires you to make 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of them.

•Three contacts per week seems like a lot. What counts as a contact?

•Applying for jobs, networking events, contacting employers directly, even some online activities through WorkSourceWA. They're pretty flexible about what counts.

•just applying to jobs online counts, I usually just apply to 3 jobs on Indeed every week and log those

THE SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN! I've been trying to get through to them for WEEKS and can't reach a human being. How are we supposed to get help when we need it???

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - their whole thing is getting you connected to actual Washington ESD agents when you need to talk to someone.

•I might have to check that out because this is ridiculous

OP, one more thing - make sure you have a reliable internet connection when you're filing. The session can time out if it takes too long and you might lose your progress.

•Good point, I'll make sure I'm on wifi and not my phone data.

•That's reassuring to hear! I'm always worried about messing up government forms.

•Same here, but the Washington ESD site is actually pretty user-friendly compared to other government websites I've used.

If you worked in multiple states recently, make sure you're filing in the right state. Generally it's where you worked most recently, but there are exceptions.

•I've only worked in Washington so I should be good there.

Another vote for getting started ASAP. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits. Even if there are delays in processing, at least you'll be in the system.

Quick question for everyone - do you get an email confirmation right away after filing? Want to make sure I did it right.
0 coins
Leo Simmons
•Yeah you should get a confirmation email within a few minutes with your claim number

•Good to know what to expect, thanks!

Pro tip: save your confirmation number somewhere safe. You'll need it for basically everything related to your claim.

•Will do! I'll screenshot it and also write it down.

I had a friend who tried to file using his phone and kept having issues with the website. Desktop or laptop computer works much better if you have access to one.

One last thing - after you file your initial claim, you'll need to complete an eligibility interview either online or by phone. Don't ignore those notifications or your claim could be delayed.

Ryder Everingham
•Thanks for mentioning that! I'll make sure to stay on top of any follow-up requirements.

•The eligibility interview is usually pretty quick, just basic questions about why you lost your job and your availability to work.

Hope everything works out for you OP! The first claim filing can be stressful but you've got this. The Washington ESD system isn't perfect but it does work.
