Where do you go to file for unemployment in Washington - need help finding the right place
I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant and need to file for unemployment benefits but I'm totally lost on where to go. Is there a physical office I need to visit or can I do this online? I've never filed for unemployment before and don't want to mess this up. My last day of work was Friday and I heard you're supposed to file right away. Can someone point me in the right direction?

You don't need to go anywhere in person - everything is done online through the Washington ESD website. Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section. You'll need to create an account first if you don't have one already.

•Thanks! Do I need to bring any documents or paperwork when I apply online?

•Have your Social Security card, driver's license, and employment history ready. You'll need dates of employment and reason for separation for your last 18 months of work.

The Washington ESD offices are mostly closed for walk-ins now. Everything moved online during COVID and never really went back. The website can be confusing at first but it walks you through step by step.

•Yeah I tried going to the office in Tacoma last year and they just told me to go home and file online lol

•Good to know! I was planning to drive downtown tomorrow morning.

File your claim as soon as possible but know that your waiting week starts the Sunday of the week you become unemployed. So if you were laid off Friday, your benefit year technically starts this past Sunday. Don't wait too long though - there are deadlines.

•What happens if you miss the deadline? Asking for a friend who got fired three weeks ago but hasn't filed yet...

•You can still file but you might lose some weeks of benefits. Tell your friend to file ASAP and explain the delay when prompted.

I struggled with this too when I got laid off. Spent hours trying to get through on the phone to ask basic questions. Finally found out about Claimyr which actually got me connected to a real person at Washington ESD who walked me through the whole process. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo that shows exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•Is that some kind of paid service? Seems sketchy to pay someone to help you file for free benefits.

•It's not for filing - it's for getting through to Washington ESD agents when you have questions. Way better than sitting on hold for 3 hours.

•Might need this if I run into problems. The website does look pretty complicated.

make sure you have your bank info ready for direct deposit, they ask for that right away. also prepare for the site to be slow, especially on mondays

•Good tip about Mondays - I was planning to file tomorrow morning.

•Tuesday through Thursday mornings are usually better for the website speed.

The whole system is a nightmare. Took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because of some stupid verification issue. Make sure you answer every question exactly right the first time or you'll be stuck in adjudication hell.

Giovanni Mancini
•What kind of verification issue? Now I'm worried I'll mess something up.

•They wanted additional proof of my identity even though I uploaded everything they asked for. Had to mail in documents and wait forever.

•That's not typical. Most claims get approved within a few days if you provide complete information upfront.

Here's the step by step: 1) Go to esd.wa.gov 2) Click 'Apply for Unemployment Benefits' 3) Create your SecureAccess Washington account if needed 4) Complete the application - takes about 30-45 minutes 5) Submit and wait for your monetary determination letter

•This is super helpful, thank you! About how long does the application take to complete?

Dylan Cooper
•Depends on how many jobs you've had. If you've worked multiple places in the last 18 months it takes longer to enter all the employment info.

Don't forget you have to do job search activities starting right away. Washington requires 3 job search activities per week and you have to log them in the system.

Giovanni Mancini
•What counts as a job search activity?

•Applying for jobs, networking, going to job fairs, informational interviews. Has to be stuff that could reasonably lead to a job.

I had to call Washington ESD three times during my claim because I kept getting confusing notices. Each time I waited 2+ hours on hold. That Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier actually sounds useful for avoiding that nightmare.

•Yeah that's exactly why I used it. Saved me so much time and frustration with the phone system.

•I'll definitely keep it in mind if I run into issues. Hopefully the online application goes smoothly.

Pro tip: Print or screenshot your confirmation page after you submit your application. You'll get a confirmation number that's useful to have if you need to call later. Also check your email for next steps within 24-48 hours.

•Great advice! Should I expect to get my first payment right away or does it take a while?

•There's a one week waiting period, then if everything's approved you should get paid within a week of filing your first weekly claim.

Most important thing is to be completely honest about why you were separated from your job. If they find out later you weren't truthful it can cause major problems with your claim.

•I was laid off due to downsizing, so that should be straightforward. Just need to explain it clearly.

•yeah layoffs are usually pretty cut and dry. fired for cause is where it gets complicated

One more thing - after you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every Sunday to keep getting benefits. Don't miss a week or you could lose eligibility for that period.

Giovanni Mancini
•So I file once now for the initial claim, then weekly after that? Got it.
0 coins
Fatima Al-Suwaidi
•Exactly. The weekly claims are much shorter - just a few questions about your job search and any work you did that week.

Washington ESD's website crashes all the time and their phone system is garbage. Budget extra time for technical difficulties. The whole system is held together with duct tape and prayers.

•It's definitely not the most user-friendly system but it works if you're patient with it.

•I'll plan to file early in the day when hopefully fewer people are online.

if the website gives you trouble try using a different browser or clearing your cache. sometimes that fixes the glitches

Since you're new to this whole process, I'd really recommend having that Claimyr service handy just in case. When I was filing my claim I had so many questions that weren't clearly answered on the website. Being able to actually talk to a Washington ESD person made all the difference.

•I'll bookmark their site. Hopefully I won't need it but better to be prepared.

•Wish I had known about that when I was dealing with my claim issues. Would have saved me days of stress.

Bottom line: esd.wa.gov is your starting point. Have your employment history ready, be honest and complete in your answers, and don't wait to file. The system has its quirks but thousands of people successfully file claims every week.

Just remember the job search requirement starts immediately even during your waiting week. Don't let that catch you off guard when you file your first weekly claim.

Giovanni Mancini
•I'll start applying for jobs right away then. Better to be ahead of the requirement.

Final checklist for you: Social Security card, ID, employment dates and addresses for last 18 months, bank info for direct deposit, reason for separation from your last job. Having all that ready will make the application much smoother.

One last thing - if you worked in another state in the past 18 months, that might complicate things. Washington ESD will need to coordinate with that state's unemployment office for your wage information.

Giovanni Mancini
•I've only worked in Washington, so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

•Good, that makes the process much more straightforward.

The Washington ESD website has a pretty good tutorial section if you want to walk through the process before actually filing. Might help you feel more prepared.
