Where do you go to file unemployment in Washington state?
I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant and I have no idea where to start with filing for unemployment benefits. Is there a physical office I need to visit or can I do this online? I've never had to deal with this before and I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed. Any guidance on where to actually go to file would be really helpful.

You can file online through the Washington ESD website at secure.esd.wa.gov - no need to visit an office in person. The whole process is digital now which actually makes it easier once you get started.

•Thanks! Do I need to create an account first or can I just jump right into filing?

•You'll need to create a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't already have one, then you can access the unemployment application through that.

The Washington ESD online system is your best bet. You'll want to file as soon as possible since there's a waiting week and benefits are calculated from when you file, not when you lost your job. Make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months ready.

•Good to know about filing quickly. What kind of employment history details do they need exactly?

•Employer names, addresses, dates of employment, reason for separation, and your wages. Having your last few pay stubs handy helps too.

I tried calling Washington ESD when I first filed but their phone lines are absolutely swamped. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. The online filing is definitely the way to go, but if you run into issues and need to actually talk to someone, good luck getting through.

•The phone situation is brutal. I found this service called Claimyr that actually helps you get through to ESD agents when you need to talk to someone. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, I hadn't heard of that. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - they basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

Just to add - there are no physical WorkSource offices you need to visit for filing unemployment anymore. Everything is done through the Washington ESD online portal. However, you will need to register with WorkSourceWA.com for the job search requirements once your claim is approved.

•Wait, there are job search requirements? What does that involve?

Sunny Wang
•Yes, you'll need to complete at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. This includes applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, etc. It's all tracked through WorkSourceWA.

•Yeah, it's not very intuitive. Did you eventually get it sorted out?

•yeah but it took weeks and multiple attempts. wish someone had just told me about the esd website from the beginning

One thing to keep in mind - after you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. This is also done through the same Washington ESD online system. Don't forget to do this or you'll miss out on payments.

•How do the weekly claims work exactly? Is it complicated?
0 coins
Statiia Aarssizan
•Not too bad - just questions about whether you worked, looked for work, were available for work, etc. Takes maybe 10-15 minutes each week.

•Make sure you answer those weekly questions honestly. They do check up on stuff and if you mess up the weekly claims you can get in trouble.

I remember being so confused about this too. The Washington ESD website is secure.esd.wa.gov/home/ - that's the main portal for everything unemployment related. Once you're in there, look for 'Apply for Benefits' to start your initial claim.

•Perfect, thank you for the exact link. That's exactly what I needed.

Just filed mine last month after getting laid off from tech. The process was actually smoother than I expected once I got started. Biggest tip - have all your documents ready before you begin because you can't save your progress halfway through.

•Good to know! About how long did the whole application take you?

Lydia Santiago
•Maybe 45 minutes to an hour? Most of that was just entering employment history details.

Don't forget you'll also need to verify your identity during the process. Washington ESD uses ID.me for identity verification now, so be prepared for that step. Sometimes it can take a few days if they need additional documents.

•What kind of documents do they typically ask for with ID.me?

Romeo Quest
•Usually driver's license, Social Security card, sometimes utility bills or bank statements. Have photos of these ready on your phone or computer.

The waiting period is the worst part honestly. Even after you file, there's a one week waiting period before you can receive benefits, then it can take another week or two for your claim to be processed and approved.

•So basically I'm looking at 2-3 weeks before I see any money?

Val Rossi
•That's about right if everything goes smoothly. Could be longer if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason.

•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

Val Rossi
•It's just when they need to review your claim for some reason - like if there's a question about why you were laid off or if you have wages from multiple states. It's not necessarily bad, just takes longer.

I had to call Washington ESD during my claim process because I had some complicated wage issues. Calling was a nightmare until I used Claimyr - they got me connected to an actual person in like 20 minutes instead of the usual 3+ hour wait times.

•That's the second mention of Claimyr I've seen here. Might be worth looking into if I run into issues.

•Yeah definitely worth it if you need to actually speak with someone. Way less stressful than the regular calling process.

Also worth mentioning - if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, you might need to file an interstate claim. This can complicate things a bit but it's still done through the Washington ESD website.

•I only worked in Washington, so that shouldn't be an issue for me. Good to know though.

Quick tip - when you file, you can choose to have taxes withheld from your unemployment benefits. I'd recommend doing this so you don't get hit with a big tax bill next year.

Ezra Beard
•Oh I didn't realize unemployment was taxable. How much do they typically withhold?
0 coins
McKenzie Shade
•I think it's 10% federal withholding. You can change this later if needed, but it's easier to set it up from the beginning.

The whole process seems overwhelming at first but once you get your claim established it becomes pretty routine. The weekly claims are straightforward and the money usually hits your account within a day or two of filing each week.

•That's reassuring to hear. I'm feeling a bit less overwhelmed about the whole thing now.

I'm dealing with an issue where my claim is stuck in some kind of review process. Been waiting 3 weeks now with no updates. Anyone know if Claimyr can help with these kinds of status check situations?
0 coins
Everett Tutum
•Yes, that's exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr is helpful. You can use them to get through to an ESD agent who can actually look at your claim status and explain what's happening.

Rudy Cenizo
•Thanks, I'll check them out. This waiting with no information is driving me crazy.

One more thing - make sure you keep checking your ESD account regularly for any messages or requests for additional information. They communicate everything through the online portal now and if you miss something it can delay your claim.

Ezra Beard
•Good point. I'll make sure to check it frequently once I get my account set up.

The system has definitely improved over the years but it's still not perfect. Just be patient with the process and don't hesitate to reach out for help if you get stuck. There are people here who have been through it all before.
