Where do I go to collect unemployment benefits in Washington - confused about the process

I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant last week and I have no idea where to start with unemployment. My coworker mentioned something about filing online but I'm not sure what website to use or if I need to go somewhere in person. Do I need to go to a physical office to collect unemployment or is everything done online now? I've never had to do this before and feeling pretty overwhelmed with all the information out there.

Everything is done online through Washington ESD now. You don't go anywhere to 'collect' - you file your initial application at esd.wa.gov and then file weekly claims online to get paid. Haven't been physical offices for regular claims in years.

Oh okay that makes sense. So I just go to that website and start there?

0 coins

Yep, click on 'File for benefits' and it will walk you through the application process step by step.

You'll need to create an account on SecureAccess Washington first before you can access the Washington ESD unemployment system. Make sure you have all your employment info ready - last employer details, wages, dates worked, etc.

0 coins

What if I don't remember exact dates? I worked there for like 3 years.

0 coins

Get as close as you can. Washington ESD will verify with your employer anyway. Just don't leave it blank.

Had the same confusion when I got laid off. The whole process is online but calling Washington ESD to check on things is nearly impossible. I spent hours trying to get through to someone when my claim got stuck in adjudication.

Same here! I've been trying to call for two weeks about my pending claim. The phone just rings and rings or I get a busy signal.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an Washington ESD agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

Is that legit? How does it work exactly?

0 coins

Just file online ASAP. There's a waiting week in Washington so the sooner you file the better. Don't wait around thinking about it.

0 coins

What's a waiting week mean?

0 coins

First week after you file you don't get paid even if approved. It's just how the system works here.

0 coins

ugh the washington unemployment system is so confusing compared to other states. everything online but then when you need help good luck getting anyone on the phone!!!

0 coins

It's actually pretty straightforward once you get started. The online portal walks you through everything step by step.

0 coins

yeah until something goes wrong and you need to talk to a human

Don't forget you'll need to do job search activities too. Washington requires you to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log of them.

0 coins

Job search activities? Like what counts as that?

0 coins

Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, even some online training courses count. You track it all in WorkSourceWA.

Another website? This is getting complicated.

Been collecting UI for 2 months now. The weekly claims are easy once you get the hang of it. Just answer the same questions every week about whether you worked, looked for work, etc.

0 coins

How long does it take to get approved after you file?

0 coins

Mine took about 10 days but I know some people wait weeks if there are issues with their claim.

0 coins

Make sure you have direct deposit set up or you'll be waiting forever for paper checks. The online system lets you add your bank info during the application.

Good tip, thanks!

Update on the Claimyr thing - it actually worked for me. Got connected to an Washington ESD rep within like 20 minutes instead of calling for hours. Worth it when you're stuck and need answers.

0 coins

Okay I'm convinced. Going to try it tomorrow since I still can't get through normally.

0 coins

Never heard of that service but if it works it works. Washington ESD phone system is definitely broken.

0 coins

One thing nobody mentioned - if you worked in other states in the past 18 months you might need to file an interstate claim. That adds extra steps to the process.

0 coins

I only worked in Washington so I should be good there.

The Washington ESD website has a bunch of tutorials and FAQs that actually help. Don't just jump into filing without reading through some of that stuff first.

0 coins

Where are those located on the site?

0 coins

Look for the 'Help' section or 'Unemployment Insurance Handbook' - has everything explained in detail.

0 coins

Pro tip: file early in the morning or late evening to avoid peak times when the system gets slow. Sunday mornings work great for weekly claims.

0 coins

Good to know, I'll keep that in mind when I file.

0 coins

whatever you do dont mess up your weekly claims. if you miss filing one week it can mess up your whole claim and then youll be calling washington esd for weeks trying to fix it

0 coins

How often do you have to file these weekly claims?

0 coins

Every week to get paid for that week. Usually available to file on Sundays for the previous week.

0 coins

I was so scared to file at first but honestly the online system is pretty user-friendly. Just take your time reading each question and don't rush through it.

0 coins

That makes me feel better. I was worried it would be really complicated.

0 coins

If your claim gets flagged for adjudication don't panic. It just means they need to verify something about your employment or separation. Usually gets resolved within a few weeks.

0 coins

What kind of things get flagged?

0 coins

Stuff like if you quit vs got laid off, if you got severance pay, any gaps in employment. Pretty routine verification stuff.

0 coins

Just to follow up on Claimyr again since someone asked - you basically tell them what you need help with and they call Washington ESD for you and get you connected to the right person. Saved me so much time and frustration.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost?

0 coins

I don't want to get into pricing details here but check their site. For me it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of calling for hours.

0 coins

Bottom line - start at esd.wa.gov, create your SecureAccess Washington account, file your initial claim, then file weekly claims every week. That's the basic process.

0 coins

Perfect summary, thank you! I'm going to start the process tonight.

0 coins

Also remember to keep records of everything - screenshots of your claims, confirmation numbers, any correspondence. You never know when you'll need to reference something later.

0 coins

Great advice. I'll start keeping a folder with all that stuff.

0 coins

Been through this process twice now and it gets easier each time. First time was overwhelming but now I know exactly what to expect.

0 coins

Hopefully I only have to do this once! But good to know it gets easier.

0 coins

One last thing - make sure your contact info is always up to date in the system. Washington ESD will send important notices to whatever address and phone number you have on file.

0 coins

Will do. Thanks everyone for all the help and advice!
