Where do I file unemployment benefits in Washington State?
I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant and need to file for unemployment benefits. I'm completely lost on where to start the process. Do I go to a physical office somewhere or is everything online now? I've never had to do this before and honestly have no idea what I'm doing. Can someone point me in the right direction for filing in Washington State?

Everything is done online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. You'll need to create an account and file your initial application there. Make sure you have your social security number, driver's license, and employment information for the last 18 months before you start.

•Thank you! Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after being laid off to file?

•No, file as soon as possible. Your claim starts the week you file, not when you were laid off, so don't delay.

I tried filing online last month and the website kept crashing on me. Took me three tries to get through the whole application process.

•The ESD website has been having issues lately. Best times to use it are early morning or late evening when traffic is lower.

•Yeah I finally got it done around 6am on a Sunday. Ridiculous that we have to work around their technical problems.

You file at secure.esd.wa.gov - that's the main portal. But honestly, if you run into problems getting through to ESD for questions about your claim, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually connected me to an ESD agent when I couldn't get through on my own.

•How much does something like that cost?

•I don't remember the exact amount but it was worth it for me since I needed to talk to someone about my claim status.

Make sure you have all your employer information ready - company names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. The application asks for a lot of details.

•What if I worked for a temp agency? Do I list the temp agency or the actual companies I worked at?

Emily Thompson
•List the temp agency as your employer since they're who paid you and will be charged for the benefits.

•You have to create a SecureAccess Washington account first, then link it to your ESD account. It's confusing but once it's set up it's easier.

Key things to remember: File your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov, then you'll need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. You also have to do job search activities and report them. Don't skip the weekly filing or you won't get paid for that week.

•How many job search activities do I need to do per week?

Liam O'Reilly
•You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of them. This includes applications, interviews, networking events, etc.

•Wait, I thought it was 2 per week?

•It's 3 job search activities per week as of 2024. The requirements changed from the pandemic era.

I've been unemployed for 2 months and still waiting for my claim to be approved. Something about adjudication? Anyone know how long that takes?

Rajiv Kumar
•Adjudication can take several weeks depending on the complexity of your case. It happens when there are questions about your eligibility or the reason you left your job.

•This is so frustrating. I need the money now, not in several more weeks.

•That's exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr helped me. I was able to talk to an ESD agent about my adjudication status and get some clarity on what was happening.

Pro tip: Have your bank account information ready for direct deposit setup. Getting checks in the mail takes forever.

•Good point! How long does direct deposit usually take to set up?

Zoe Walker
•Usually takes effect within a few business days of setting it up in your account.

Does anyone know if you can file if you're working part-time? I got my hours cut but I'm still employed.

•Yes, you can file for partial unemployment if your hours were reduced. You'll need to report your earnings each week when you file your weekly claim.

•Thanks! I wasn't sure if that was allowed.

The Washington ESD website has a lot of good information but it can be overwhelming. Start with the 'How to Apply' section and go step by step.

•I agree, there's almost too much information on there. Sometimes you just need someone to walk you through it.

Whatever you do, don't wait! I made the mistake of waiting a week to file thinking I might get called back to work. Lost a whole week of benefits because of that.

•That's exactly what I was worried about. Filing today for sure.

•Smart move. Even if you go back to work quickly, at least you'll have the claim started.

I had to call ESD with questions about my application and it was impossible to get through. Literally spent days trying.

•Yeah the phone system is brutal. That's why I ended up using Claimyr - it actually got me connected to a real person at ESD when I couldn't get through myself.

Make sure you answer all the questions honestly on your application. They will verify everything with your employers.

•What happens if there's a mistake on the application?

•You can usually correct minor mistakes through your online account, but major issues might require talking to an ESD representative.

The whole process seems really complicated. I'm dreading having to deal with all this bureaucracy.

•It's not as bad as it seems once you get started. The online system walks you through each step pretty clearly.

•I hope you're right. I just don't want to mess something up and delay my benefits.

Good luck with your claim! Most people get approved without major issues if they qualify. Just be patient with the system.
