Where do you sign up for unemployment benefits in Washington state?
I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant and need to file for unemployment benefits. I'm not sure where to start - do I need to go to a physical office or can I do this online? I've never been on unemployment before so I'm pretty lost. Can someone point me in the right direction for signing up with Washington ESD?

You can file online at eservices.esd.wa.gov - that's the Washington ESD website for unemployment claims. You'll need to create an account and have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history ready. The whole process takes about 30-45 minutes.

•Thanks! Do I need to have my last pay stub or anything like that when I apply?

Isabella Oliveira
•Not required for the initial application, but having your last few pay stubs helps you fill out the wage information more accurately.

The online system is down half the time though. I tried signing up last week and kept getting error messages. Super frustrating when you need benefits ASAP.

•Yeah the Washington ESD website can be glitchy. Try early morning or late evening when fewer people are online.

•Good tip, I'll try that. Thanks!

If you're having trouble with the online system, you can also call the Washington ESD customer service line, but be prepared for long wait times. I spent 3 hours on hold last month just to ask a simple question about my claim.

•Wow 3 hours? That's insane. Is there any way to get through faster?

•Actually, I discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents without waiting on hold. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of frustration.

•Interesting, never heard of that. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - they basically call on your behalf and connect you when an agent is available. Way better than sitting on hold all day.

Make sure you apply as soon as possible after losing your job. There's a waiting week in Washington state, so the sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits. Also, you'll need to register with WorkSource Washington for job search requirements.

•What's WorkSource Washington? Is that separate from the unemployment application?

•It's the state's job search portal. You have to register there and document your job search activities to keep getting unemployment benefits. Part of the requirements.

•The job search requirements are such a pain. You have to apply to 3 jobs per week and keep detailed records.

One important thing - when you file your initial claim, make sure all your employment information is accurate. If Washington ESD needs to verify anything with your previous employers, it can delay your claim for weeks during adjudication.

•What's adjudication? Sounds scary.

•It's just when Washington ESD reviews your claim to make sure you're eligible. Usually happens if there are questions about why you lost your job or your work history.

•My claim went into adjudication for 6 weeks because my employer contested it. Was awful not knowing if I'd get benefits.

Don't forget you also need to file weekly claims to actually receive your benefits. The initial application is just step one - you have to certify every week that you're still unemployed and looking for work.

Malik Jackson
•How do you file the weekly claims? Same website?

NebulaNinja
•Yes, same eservices.esd.wa.gov site. You log in every Sunday and answer questions about your job search and any work you did that week.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for 2 months about my claim and they keep hanging up on me. How are people supposed to survive when the agency that's supposed to help you won't even answer the phone???

•I feel your pain. The phone system is completely broken. Have you tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier? Might be worth a shot if you're desperate.

•Never heard of it but at this point I'll try anything. Thanks for the suggestion.

Quick question - do you have to be a Washington state resident to file for unemployment here? I just moved here from Oregon for a job that fell through.

Isabella Oliveira
•You file in the state where you worked, not where you live. So if your job was in Washington, you file with Washington ESD even if you're new to the state.

Mateo Sanchez
•Perfect, that's what I was hoping. Thanks!

Also heads up - you can't collect unemployment if you quit your job voluntarily in most cases. Has to be a layoff, firing for non-misconduct reasons, or other qualifying separation.

•What if you quit because of unsafe working conditions? Does that count?

Aisha Mahmood
•That might qualify as 'good cause' but you'd need to document the unsafe conditions and show you tried to resolve it with your employer first.

Been on unemployment 3 times over the years. The key is to file immediately after losing your job and keep detailed records of everything. Save all correspondence from Washington ESD and document every phone call or contact attempt.

•That's really good advice. I'll start keeping records from day one.

•Smart approach. I wish I had done that when my claim got messed up. Took forever to sort out without proper documentation.

Whatever you do, don't wait to apply thinking you might find a job quickly. Even if you find work right away, you can always stop filing weekly claims. But if you wait weeks to apply, you lose out on benefits for that whole period.

Malik Jackson
•Good point. I was thinking about waiting a week or two to see what happens with some job applications, but I'll file tomorrow instead.

Carmen Vega
•Definitely file ASAP. You can always cancel if you don't need it, but those missed weeks can't be recovered.

•This is such important advice. I made that mistake and lost out on $2,000 in benefits because I waited too long to file.

One more tip - if you have direct deposit set up, you'll get your benefits faster than waiting for a debit card or check. The payment processing is much quicker.

Malik Jackson
•Can you set up direct deposit during the initial application?
0 coins
Zoe Stavros
•Yes, there's a section for banking information where you can enter your account details for direct deposit.

I'm curious about that Claimyr thing too. Has anyone else actually used it successfully? Seems too good to be true that you can skip the phone queues.

•I used it twice when I needed to check on my claim status. Both times they got me connected within an hour instead of me spending my whole day calling. Worth it when you really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

GalaxyGlider
•How does it work exactly? Do they just call for you?
0 coins
CosmicCrusader
•Yeah, you give them your info and they handle the calling and waiting. When an agent is available, they conference you in. Check out that demo video I mentioned earlier if you want to see how it works.

Just remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay quarterly, but don't forget about it come tax time.
0 coins
Malik Jackson
•Oh wow, I didn't know that. How much do they typically withhold for taxes?
0 coins
Mei Wong
•I think it's 10% federal tax withholding if you elect it. Washington state doesn't have income tax so no state withholding needed.

I went through this same process about 6 months ago when my company downsized. The online application at eservices.esd.wa.gov really is the best way to go - just make sure you have all your employment info handy before you start. One thing I wish someone had told me is to take screenshots of every page as you fill it out, because if the system glitches (which it does sometimes), you don't want to lose all your work and have to start over. Also, don't stress too much about getting every detail perfect - you can always provide additional information later if needed. The most important thing is just getting that initial claim filed as soon as possible. Good luck!
