Where can I file unemployment in Washington state - need help finding the right place
I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant and I need to file for unemployment benefits but I'm completely lost on where to start. I've never had to do this before and I'm not sure if I go somewhere in person or do it online? My coworker mentioned something about Washington ESD but I don't even know what that stands for. Can someone please tell me where I'm supposed to go to file unemployment? I'm getting really stressed about this whole process.

Washington ESD stands for Employment Security Department - that's the state agency that handles unemployment benefits. You file everything online through their website at esd.wa.gov. There's no in-person filing anymore, it's all done digitally now.

•Thank you! So I don't need to go to any physical office? That's actually a relief because I wasn't sure where I'd even find one.

•Nope, all online now. Just make sure you have your Social Security card and employment history ready before you start.

The official website is secure.esd.wa.gov - you'll need to create an account through SecureAccess Washington (SAW) first if you don't already have one. The application process takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your information ready. You'll need your SSN, employment dates, and employer contact info for the last 18 months.

•18 months?? I've only been at my current job for 8 months. Do I need info from my previous job too?

•Yes, you need all employers from the last 18 months. This helps determine your benefit amount based on your total wages earned during that period.

•I had trouble with the SAW account creation - kept getting error messages. Anyone else have issues with that?

I filed mine last month and honestly the hardest part was getting through to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions. The website is pretty straightforward but if you run into problems, good luck getting them on the phone. I tried calling for weeks and kept getting busy signals or getting disconnected.

•Same experience here! The phone system is terrible. I found this service called Claimyr that actually helped me get through to a real person at Washington ESD. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but anything has to be better than sitting on hold for hours just to get hung up on.

•Is that legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything if I run into problems with my application.

Make sure you file as soon as possible after your last day of work. There's a waiting period anyway so don't delay. Also keep track of your job search activities from day one because you'll need to report those on your weekly claims.

•What kind of job search activities? I haven't started looking yet because I was focusing on getting the unemployment figured out first.

•You need to be actively looking for work and document it. Apply for jobs, attend job fairs, network - whatever counts as legitimate job search activity. You'll report this when you file weekly claims.

the website is pretty easy to use just make sure u have everything ready before u start like the other person said. i made the mistake of starting without my old pay stubs and had to start over

•Good tip! I'll gather everything first. Do I need actual pay stubs or just the employment dates and wages?

Lukas Fitzgerald
•Employment dates and wages are sufficient for the initial application. You might need pay stubs later if there are any discrepancies that need verification.

One thing to know is that your claim will likely go into adjudication after you file, especially if this is your first time. Don't panic if it says 'pending' or 'under review' - that's normal. It just means they're verifying your information with your employer.

•How long does that take? I'm worried about how I'm going to pay rent if this drags on for weeks.

•It varies but usually 2-4 weeks. Unfortunately there's not much you can do to speed it up except make sure all your information was accurate when you filed.

•Mine took 6 weeks last year! The adjudication process can be really slow, especially if they have follow-up questions.

I went through this whole process earlier this year and the most frustrating part was when I needed to talk to someone about my claim status but couldn't get through on the phone. I eventually used Claimyr to get connected and it was a game changer. Worth every penny when you're stressed about your benefits.

•How does that work exactly? Do they call for you or something?

Gabriel Ruiz
•They basically get you through the phone system and connect you directly to an agent. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•I'm skeptical of paying for something like that when it should be free to call the state.

Don't forget that you also need to register with WorkSource WA for job search requirements. It's a separate system but connected to your unemployment claim. You can do that at worksourcewa.com.

•Another website? This is getting complicated. Do I have to do that right away too?

•You have some time but don't wait too long. It's part of the work search requirements and you don't want to risk any issues with your benefits.

I'm dealing with a claim that's been stuck in adjudication for a month now. Every time I call Washington ESD I either get a busy signal or wait on hold for 2+ hours just to get disconnected. It's absolutely ridiculous that they make it this hard to get help.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I mentioned it earlier but seriously, it solved my phone problems with Washington ESD immediately.

•I saw your comment about that. I'm getting desperate enough to try it. The stress of not knowing what's happening with my claim is killing me.

•The phone system has always been bad but it got way worse after COVID. Too many people needing help and not enough staff.

Just a heads up that you'll need to file weekly claims every week to actually receive payments, even while your initial claim is being processed. Don't skip weeks thinking you'll just backdate later because it doesn't always work that way.

•Weekly claims? I thought you just filed once and then got paid automatically.

Sophia Gabriel
•Nope, you have to certify every week that you're still unemployed and looking for work. It's called filing your weekly claim and you do it through the same website.

•Yeah this confused me too when I first filed. The weekly claims are separate from your initial application.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS A JOKE! I've been trying to get through to them for THREE WEEKS about an issue with my claim and it's impossible. The phone system hangs up on you, the online messaging system gives you generic responses that don't help, and there's no way to get actual help. How is this legal??

•I feel your frustration. Have you tried calling right when they open at 8am? Sometimes that's the only way to get through.

•I've tried EVERYTHING. Early morning, lunch time, late afternoon. Nothing works. The system is broken.

•This is exactly why services like Claimyr exist. When the state can't provide basic customer service, people find other solutions.

Quick question - do you have to file unemployment in the state where you worked or where you live? I worked in Washington but just moved to Oregon.

Lukas Fitzgerald
•You file in the state where you worked, so you'd still file with Washington ESD even though you now live in Oregon.

•Thanks! That makes sense but I wasn't sure.

For anyone starting this process, my advice is to be patient and persistent. The system isn't perfect but most people do eventually get their benefits. Just make sure you follow all the requirements and keep good records of everything.

•Good luck! The hardest part is just getting started. Once you have your claim filed, it gets easier.

One last tip - make sure you understand the difference between being laid off and being fired. If you were terminated for cause, your claim might be denied initially and you'll have to appeal. But if you were laid off due to lack of work, your claim should be approved as long as you meet the other requirements.

Jungleboo Soletrain
•I was definitely laid off, not fired. The whole plant is shutting down so it's not about my performance or anything like that.

Sunny Wang
•Perfect, that should make your claim pretty straightforward then. Plant closures are usually the easiest type of unemployment claim to get approved.

remember to file ur weekly claims on sunday if possible, the system is usually less busy then and loads faster

•Good point about the timing. I always file mine Sunday evening and rarely have technical issues.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind once I get my claim set up.
