How do I file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD?
I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant after 3 years and I've never had to file for unemployment before. I'm completely lost on where to start with Washington ESD. Do I need to go somewhere in person or can I do this online? What information do I need to have ready? I heard there's some kind of waiting period - is that true? Any help would be appreciated because I'm starting to panic about paying my bills next month.

You can file online at esd.wa.gov - it's actually pretty straightforward once you get started. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including dates worked, wages earned, and reason for separation. There is a one-week waiting period before benefits start, but you still need to file your weekly claims during that time.

•Thanks! Do I need to wait until my last day of work or can I file right away?

Jayden Reed
•You can file the Sunday after your last day of work. Don't wait too long though - there are deadlines you need to meet.

Make sure you have your employer's information ready too - full company name, address, phone number, and your supervisor's name. Washington ESD will contact them to verify your claim. Also gather any separation paperwork you got when you were laid off.

•I have my final paycheck stub and a layoff notice. Is that enough?

Nora Brooks
•That should be good. The layoff notice especially helps since it shows you weren't fired for misconduct.

Just went through this whole process myself last month. The online application took me about 45 minutes to complete. After you submit it, you'll get a determination letter in about a week telling you if you're approved and how much your weekly benefit will be. Then you have to file weekly claims every Sunday to actually get paid.

•How long did it take for your first payment to come through?

Eli Wang
•About 2 weeks after I filed my first weekly claim. Remember there's that waiting week where you don't get paid even though you file.

You can file online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. The process takes about 30-45 minutes if you have everything ready.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or will they verify my wages some other way?
0 coins
Ali Anderson
•Washington ESD gets your wage info directly from your employers, so you don't need pay stubs for the initial application. Just make sure your employment dates and employer info are accurate.

File as soon as possible! There's a waiting week in Washington so the sooner you apply, the sooner you can start getting benefits. You'll also need to register with WorkSource Washington for job search requirements.

Sean Matthews
•What's WorkSource Washington? Is that separate from the unemployment application?
0 coins
Zadie Patel
•Yes, it's a separate registration but they'll direct you there after you file your UI claim. It's required for job search tracking.

I was in your same situation last month and honestly the hardest part was just getting through to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions. I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an agent without waiting on hold forever. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does that cost? I'm already broke from being laid off.

A Man D Mortal
•It's way cheaper than missing weeks of benefits because you can't get answers to your questions. Totally worth it when you're dealing with adjudication issues or claim problems.

If you run into any issues with Washington ESD's phone system while trying to get help, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

Grace Johnson
•Is that legitimate? I've never heard of using a service to help with unemployment calls.
0 coins
Cassandra Moon
•Yeah it's real. They just help you get through the phone queue faster. I was skeptical too but it actually worked when I couldn't reach anyone for weeks.

Zane Hernandez
•I might need to try that. I've been calling Washington ESD for 2 weeks straight with no luck.

Make sure you have your reason for separation ready - they'll ask if you were fired, laid off, quit, etc. If you were laid off due to lack of work that's the easiest to process.
0 coins
Sean Matthews
•I was definitely laid off - they said it was due to budget cuts and let go of 5 people.
0 coins
Emma Morales
•Perfect, that should be straightforward then. Just be honest and detailed when they ask about your separation reason.

MAKE SURE you start looking for work right away! Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. This requirement starts immediately even during your waiting week. Don't mess around with this - they can disqualify you if you don't meet the job search requirements.
0 coins
Grace Johnson
•What counts as a job search contact? Just applying online?
0 coins
Genevieve Cavalier
•Applying for jobs, networking contacts, job fairs, interviews - there's a list on the Washington ESD website. Keep detailed records of everything.

Don't stress too much about the application process. The hardest part is gathering all your employment info. Washington ESD's system walks you through everything step by step. Just make sure you answer all the questions honestly, especially about why you lost your job.

•What happens if I make a mistake on the application?

•You can usually call to correct minor errors, but it's better to double-check everything before submitting.

ugh the whole system is such a mess... took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because they kept asking for more documentation

Sean Matthews
•Six weeks?! What kind of documentation did they want?

Katherine Hunter
•they wanted proof of my identity even though i had already provided my license info... then they wanted verification of my last employer which took forever

Here's the step-by-step process: 1) Go to esd.wa.gov and click 'Apply for Benefits' 2) Create your SecureAccess Washington account if you don't have one 3) Complete the initial application with all your employer info 4) Wait for your monetary determination letter 5) Start filing weekly claims after your waiting week 6) Register with WorkSource for job search requirements

Sean Matthews
•This is super helpful! How long after I apply will I know if I'm approved?
0 coins
Ali Anderson
•You should get your monetary determination within a week if there are no issues. That tells you your weekly benefit amount and how long you can collect.

Lucas Parker
•Unless it goes to adjudication like mine did... then you're looking at weeks or months

One important thing - if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, you might need to file in a different state depending on where you earned the most wages. Washington ESD can help you figure that out during the application process.

Grace Johnson
•I've only worked in Washington so I should be good there.

•Perfect, that makes it much simpler.

Don't forget you have to be able and available for work and actively looking for jobs. They'll check up on your job search activities.
0 coins
Sean Matthews
•How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?
0 coins
Donna Cline
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week but check the current requirements on the Washington ESD website since they change sometimes.

I'm going through this right now too and it's been 3 weeks since I applied with no word back. Starting to panic about my mortgage payment.

•Have you tried calling them? I know it's hard to get through but sometimes they can tell you what's holding up your claim.

•I've called probably 50 times and either get busy signal or they hang up on me after being on hold for 2 hours

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if your initial claim is still pending! I made the mistake of not filing because I thought I had to wait for approval first.
0 coins
Sean Matthews
•Good to know! When do you start filing weekly claims?
0 coins
Kelsey Hawkins
•You can start filing weekly claims the week after you apply, but remember there's a waiting week so your first payable week is actually the second week.

Also sign up for WorkSource Washington while you're at it. It's their job search portal and using it helps satisfy some of your job search requirements. Plus they have career counseling and training programs if you're interested.

•Is that required or just recommended?

•It's not technically required but it makes meeting your job search requirements much easier.

The whole process gave me so much anxiety. I kept thinking I was doing something wrong because it seemed too simple at first, then too complicated when they started asking for more info.

Sean Matthews
•That's exactly how I'm feeling right now! Like there must be some catch I'm missing.

•It really is straightforward if you have all your info ready. The anxiety is normal but most claims go through without major issues.

Whatever you do, DON'T miss your weekly claim filing deadline. I missed one week and it was a nightmare trying to get it backdated.
0 coins
Sean Matthews
•What day of the week do you have to file by?

Edwards Hugo
•You file for the previous week and I think the deadline is Saturday night, but double check that on your account once you get set up.

Just be prepared for the possibility that your claim might go to adjudication if there's anything unclear about your separation. Mine did because my employer initially contested it.
0 coins
Sean Matthews
•What happens during adjudication? How long does that take?
0 coins
Gianna Scott
•They investigate your separation reason and interview both you and your employer. Can take anywhere from 2-8 weeks depending on their workload.

One thing they don't tell you upfront is that you might need to verify your identity through ID.me. That process can add extra time if you don't have all the right documents.
0 coins
Sean Matthews
•What kind of documents do they want for ID verification?
0 coins
Kaitlyn Jenkins
•Usually driver's license and Social Security card, but sometimes they want additional proof like utility bills or bank statements.

I helped my brother file last month and we ran into issues because he had worked in multiple states. Made the application more complicated.

•I've only worked in Washington so hopefully that won't be an issue for me.

Just want to follow up on my earlier comment about Claimyr - if you do run into issues getting through to Washington ESD by phone, that service really does work. I was skeptical at first but it saved me weeks of frustration trying to get answers about my claim status.

Quick tip - file your weekly claims early on Sunday mornings. The system can get overloaded later in the day and you might have trouble getting through. I learned that the hard way when I almost missed a filing deadline.

Been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about my own claim issues. The phone system is absolutely terrible - either busy signal or they hang up on you after an hour on hold. Might have to try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier.

The whole process seems overwhelming at first but it's really not that bad. Just take it one step at a time and don't put it off. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start getting benefits.

One more thing - if your claim gets stuck in adjudication (which happens sometimes), don't panic. It just means they need to verify some information with your employer. Can take a few weeks but you'll get back pay once it's resolved.
0 coins
Grace Johnson
•What's adjudication exactly?
0 coins
Genevieve Cavalier
•It's when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim before approving it. Usually just routine verification.

Ethan Scott
Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if your initial application is still being processed. You can't go back and file for weeks you missed, so don't skip any.

Last piece of advice - screenshot or print confirmation pages after you submit anything. Having that proof can be helpful if there are any issues later with Washington ESD saying they didn't receive something.
