How can I file unemployment with Washington ESD - need help with the process

I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant and I've never filed for unemployment before. I'm really confused about how to start the process with Washington ESD. Do I need to go somewhere in person or can I do it online? What documents do I need to have ready? I heard there's a waiting period but I'm not sure what that means. Any help would be appreciated, I'm pretty stressed about this whole situation.

You can file your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov - don't need to go anywhere in person. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment info from your last job (dates, employer name, reason for separation). The waiting period is just the first week where you don't get paid, but you still need to file that week.

Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or anything like that? I'm worried I don't have all the right paperwork.

Pay stubs help but aren't required for the initial filing. Washington ESD will verify your wages with your employer directly. Just have your employer's info ready.

The online system is pretty straightforward but can be slow during busy times. Make sure you file your initial claim as soon as possible - there's no benefit to waiting. You'll create an account on SecureAccess Washington (SAW) first, then access the unemployment services.

How long does it usually take to get approved? I'm worried about paying my bills.

If there are no issues, you should see your first payment within 2-3 weeks. But if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason, it can take longer.

I tried calling Washington ESD last week to ask questions before filing and could never get through. The phone system is absolutely terrible. After getting hung up on multiple times, I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually got me connected to a real person at Washington ESD. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of frustration.

Is that service legit? I'm always suspicious of third-party stuff when it comes to government benefits.

Yeah it's real. They just help you get through the phone queue - you still talk directly to Washington ESD staff. Worth it when you can't get through otherwise.

I might try that if I run into problems. The phone situation sounds horrible.

Don't forget you'll need to do weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still processing. Log in every Sunday to certify for the previous week. Miss a week and you lose that week's benefits.

What exactly do I need to report on the weekly claims? I'm not working right now so I don't have any income.

0 coins

You'll report any work you did that week, any income you received, and your job search activities. Even if it's all zeros, you still need to file.

The job search requirement is 3 jobs per week that you have to log in WorkSourceWA. Start doing that right away even before your claim is approved. They can audit your job search activities.

Do I really need to apply to 3 jobs every single week? That seems like a lot.

0 coins

Yes, it's the law in Washington. You can get disqualified if you don't meet the job search requirements. Better to start early.

The 3 job contacts can include more than just applications - networking, job fairs, skills training all count if you document them properly.

ugh the whole system is such a pain. i filed 2 months ago and still waiting for my first payment because of some adjudication issue they wont explain clearly

That's exactly what I'm afraid of! What kind of adjudication issue?

0 coins

something about needing to verify my separation reason with my employer. been pending forever and i cant get anyone on the phone to explain it

0 coins

For adjudication issues, you really need to talk to someone at Washington ESD directly. The online system doesn't give you enough detail about what's holding up your claim. That's another situation where something like Claimyr might help - getting through to an actual person who can look at your specific case.

maybe i should try that claimyr thing. this is ridiculous

Worth a shot if you've been stuck for 2 months. At least you'd know exactly what documents they need.

One thing to watch out for - make sure you answer all the questions honestly on your initial application. If you quit your job, you need to have a good reason or you might get disqualified. If you were laid off, that's usually fine.

I was definitely laid off due to lack of work, so I should be okay there. Thanks for the heads up though.

Even with layoffs, sometimes employers contest the claim. Had a friend whose boss said she was fired for cause when she was really laid off. Took months to sort out.

The Washington ESD website has a pretty good checklist of what you need before you start filing. Look for the 'Apply for Benefits' section - it walks you through everything step by step.

I'll check that out. I wish I had known about this stuff before I actually needed it.

Nobody really thinks about unemployment until they need it. The system is confusing but you'll figure it out.

Just wanted to add - if you worked in multiple states in the past 18 months, you might need to file in a different state or combine wages. Washington ESD can help figure that out, but it's something to mention when you file.

I've only worked in Washington, so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

Good, that makes it simpler. Multi-state claims can get really complicated.

File as soon as you can but don't stress too much about having every single document perfect. You can always provide additional information later if Washington ESD needs it. The important thing is to get your claim started.

That's reassuring. I've been putting it off because I was worried about making mistakes.

0 coins

Better to file and fix any issues than to wait and miss out on benefits you're entitled to.

0 coins

Also remember that your benefit amount is based on your wages from the past year, not your most recent job. So if you had higher paying work earlier in the year, that could actually help your weekly benefit amount.

I worked at a better paying job earlier this year before the layoff, so maybe that will help.

0 coins

Exactly! Washington ESD uses your highest quarter of earnings to calculate your weekly benefit, so that previous job might boost your payment.

I went through this whole process last year and the biggest thing I learned is to keep records of everything. Screenshot your weekly claims, save confirmation numbers, print important documents. The system can be glitchy and you'll want proof of what you submitted.

Good advice! I'll start keeping track of everything from the beginning.

0 coins

Yes! I had to prove I filed a weekly claim once when their system glitched. Having that screenshot saved me weeks of delays.

The whole process seems overwhelming at first but once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims and doing your job search, it becomes pretty automatic. Just take it one step at a time.

Thanks everyone for all the help. I feel much better about starting this process now.

Good luck! Don't hesitate to ask more questions if you run into issues. We've all been there.

One last tip - if you do need to call Washington ESD for anything, try calling right when they open at 8 AM or during lunch time around noon. Those seem to be the least busy times, though honestly the phone system is always pretty backed up.

I tried calling at 8 AM sharp and still waited 2 hours before getting disconnected. The phone situation is really bad right now.

That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Sometimes you just need to talk to someone and the regular phone system doesn't work.
