Washington ESD where do i go for unemployment benefits - lost my job last week
I just got laid off from my warehouse job last Friday and I have no idea where to go for unemployment benefits. My manager said something about filing online but I don't even know what website to use. Do I go to a physical office somewhere or is it all online now? I've never been unemployed before and I'm honestly pretty confused about the whole process. Any help would be appreciated.

You need to file your claim through the Washington ESD website at secure.esd.wa.gov. Everything is done online now, no physical offices for filing claims. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates of employment.

•Thank you! Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after getting laid off or should I file right away?

•File as soon as possible! Your benefit year starts the week you file, not when you lost your job, so don't delay.

The Washington ESD online system can be tricky to navigate at first. You'll create an account through SecureAccess Washington (SAW) if you don't already have one. Make sure you have all your employer information ready because the system will ask for detailed work history. After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid.

•What kind of employer information do they need exactly? I worked at a few different places over the past year and a half.

•They'll want company names, full addresses, your supervisor's name, dates you worked there, how much you earned, and reason you left each job. Gather all your pay stubs and W-2s before you start.

Just went through this myself a few months ago. The Washington ESD website is secure.esd.wa.gov but honestly, if you run into problems or need to talk to someone, good luck getting through on the phone. I must have called 200 times before I found out about Claimyr - it's a service that helps you get through to actual Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - they basically call for you and get you connected to an actual person at Washington ESD. Saved me weeks of frustration trying to get through myself.

•Good to know there's a backup option if I can't get help through the regular channels. Hopefully I won't need it but I'll keep that in mind.

ugh the washington esd website is such a pain, took me forever to figure out how to file my weekly claims

•What do you mean by weekly claims? I thought you just filed once for unemployment?

Jamal Anderson
•You file an initial claim to start your benefits, then you have to file a weekly claim every single week to actually get paid. The weekly claim asks about any work you did that week and any job search activities.

MAKE SURE YOU KEEP TRACK OF YOUR JOB SEARCH ACTIVITIES! Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and you have to log them in the system. I learned this the hard way when they asked for my job search log during an eligibility review.

Andre Lefebvre
•Wait, I have to look for jobs while I'm on unemployment? How do they track that?

Amara Eze
•Yes! You're required to actively search for work. You log your job search activities in your Washington ESD account - applications, interviews, networking events, etc. They can audit your log at any time.

•Some people get waivers from the job search requirement if they're on temporary layoff or in training programs, but most people have to do the 3 contacts per week.

I remember being so confused when I first filed. The terminology is overwhelming - adjudication, disqualification, monetary determination, etc. Just take it one step at a time and don't panic if your claim goes into adjudication for a few weeks.

Andre Lefebvre
•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

•It just means they're reviewing your claim to make sure you're eligible. Could be because of how you left your job, wage issues, or just random verification. It's normal but can take a few weeks.

Been on unemployment 3 times in the past 10 years unfortunately. Here's my advice: file online at secure.esd.wa.gov, be completely honest about everything, keep detailed records of all your job search activities, and file your weekly claims on time every week. Missing a weekly claim can cause major headaches.

•When do the weekly claims have to be filed? Is there a deadline?

Dylan Wright
•You can file your weekly claim starting Sunday morning for the previous week, and you have until the following Saturday to file it. Most people file on Sunday or Monday.

Pro tip: gather all your documents before you start the application. You'll need SSN, driver's license or state ID, bank info for direct deposit, and employment history for the past 18 months. Having everything ready makes the process much smoother.

•Do I need to set up direct deposit or can they mail me a check?

Sofia Torres
•You can choose either direct deposit or they'll mail you a debit card. Direct deposit is faster - you get paid on Tuesday instead of waiting for the mail.

One thing that confused me was the difference between filing date and benefit year. Your benefit year is 52 weeks from when you file, not from when you lost your job. So if you wait a month to file, you've essentially lost a month of potential benefits.

Andre Lefebvre
•So I should definitely file this week then, not wait around?

GalacticGuardian
•Absolutely! File as soon as possible. Even if there are issues with your claim, at least you'll have established your filing date.

If you run into any issues with your claim being stuck or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, I highly recommend using Claimyr. I was stuck in adjudication for 6 weeks and couldn't get through to anyone on the phone. Claimyr got me connected to an agent within a day and my claim was resolved that same week. Worth every penny.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already out of work so money's tight.

•I don't want to give wrong pricing info, but check their website claimyr.com - they have options for different situations. For me it was worth it because I was losing benefits every week my claim was delayed.

The Washington ESD system has gotten better over the years but it's still not perfect. Just be patient and persistent. If your claim gets held up for any reason, keep filing your weekly claims even if you're not getting paid yet - you can get back pay once issues are resolved.

Andre Lefebvre
•That's good to know. I was worried that if something went wrong I'd lose out on benefits completely.

Miguel Diaz
•Nope, as long as you keep filing your weekly claims you can get back pay. Just make sure you don't miss any weekly claim deadlines.

also make sure you register with WorkSource if you haven't already - it's required for unemployment benefits and helps with the job search requirement

Andre Lefebvre
•What's WorkSource? Is that separate from the Washington ESD website?

Zainab Ahmed
•worksourcewa.com - it's the state job search website. you have to register there within a certain timeframe after filing for unemployment

I've been helping people navigate unemployment for years and the biggest mistake I see is people not reading all the instructions carefully. The Washington ESD sends you important notices and letters - read everything! Don't just assume everything is automatic.

Andre Lefebvre
•Should I expect to get mail right away after I file online?
0 coins
Connor Gallagher
•Yes, you'll get a monetary determination letter within a week or two that tells you how much your benefits will be. You might also get other notices about job search requirements or eligibility issues.

Quick question - did you quit or get laid off? Because if you quit without good cause you might not be eligible for benefits. Just want to make sure you know what to expect.

Andre Lefebvre
•I got laid off, they said it was due to slow business. Should that be okay for unemployment?
0 coins
AstroAlpha
•Yeah, being laid off for lack of work is typically qualifying. Just make sure you're honest about the reason when you file your claim.

One more thing to keep in mind - your weekly benefit amount is based on your earnings in your base period, which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed. So your recent earnings might not be what they use to calculate your benefits.
0 coins
Andre Lefebvre
•That sounds confusing. Will they tell me how much I'll get when I file?
0 coins
Yara Khoury
•The system will give you an estimate when you file, and then you'll get an official monetary determination letter in the mail with the exact amounts.

Good luck with your claim! The process seems overwhelming at first but once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims it becomes pretty straightforward. Just remember to stay on top of your job search requirements and file every week on time.

Just to circle back on the Claimyr thing - I was skeptical at first too but ended up using them when my identity verification got stuck. Normally takes weeks to get through to Washington ESD but they got me connected same day. Really saved me a lot of stress and lost benefits. The video demo someone mentioned earlier really shows how it works if you're curious.

•I might need to try that if I run into problems. The horror stories about trying to reach Washington ESD by phone are pretty scary.

•Yeah, I spent literally hours on hold getting disconnected over and over. Sometimes it's worth paying for help when you're already not getting income.
