One last thought - if you do get approved, make sure you understand the weekly claim filing process. You have to file every week to certify that you're still unemployed and looking for work. Miss a week and your benefits get delayed.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful information! I feel much more confident about filing now. Going to start my application this afternoon and see what happens. Really appreciate all the detailed responses and tips about the process.
Hope it goes smoothly for you! The Washington ESD system can be intimidating at first but once you get familiar with it, it's not too bad.
And remember if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD and can't get through, that Claimyr service is always an option. Made a huge difference for me.
UPDATE: Got my deposit this morning! Thanks everyone for the help and timeline info. Definitely filing Sunday mornings from now on to get that Wednesday deposit schedule.
Just want to add that if anyone else runs into payment delays or needs to check on claim issues, Claimyr really does work. I've used it three times now when I couldn't get through the regular way. Much less stressful than spending all day redialing.
One more thing to check - make sure your direct deposit info is still correct in your account. Sometimes banks change routing numbers and Washington ESD doesn't notify you when deposits bounce back.
My friend had this happen and it was because she put 'N/A' instead of leaving a field blank on her job search log. The system flagged it as incomplete even though she had done 3 job searches that week. Such a stupid reason to hold up payments.

So basically unemployment insurance works like any other insurance - employers pay premiums (taxes) and when something happens (layoffs), the insurance (benefits) kicks in. Makes sense when you think about it that way.

•That's actually a great analogy. And like other insurance, higher risk (more claims) means higher premiums (tax rates).

I'm just glad to know it's not coming out of taxpayer money directly. Was worried about that aspect.

•Well, employers are taxpayers too, but you're right that it's not funded through general tax revenue like some other programs.
