How to claim unemployment benefit in Washington - complete beginner needs help
I just got laid off from my job at a retail store after 2 years and I have no idea how to claim unemployment benefit. Everyone keeps telling me different things and I'm getting overwhelmed. Do I apply online? What documents do I need? How long does it take to get approved? I've never done this before and really need the money to pay rent next month. Any help would be appreciated!

You'll need to file your initial claim through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. Make sure you have your most recent pay stub too.

•Thank you! Do I need to wait a certain amount of time after being laid off or can I apply right away?

Finnegan Gunn
•You can apply the same day you lose your job. Don't wait - there's a one week waiting period before benefits start anyway.

The online application is pretty straightforward but make sure you answer all the questions accurately. You'll also need to register with WorkSource WA for the job search requirements.

•What are the job search requirements? Do I have to apply for jobs right away?

Miguel Harvey
•Yes, you need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. The WorkSource website has more details about what counts as a valid job search activity.

I went through this process last year and it was such a headache trying to get through to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions. The phone lines are always busy and you get disconnected constantly. I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent in like 15 minutes. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that service legit? How much does it cost?

Ashley Simian
•Yeah it's totally legitimate. They don't ask for any personal info, just help you get through the phone queue. Way better than spending hours on hold.

•That sounds really helpful! I'll definitely check it out if I run into issues.

Make sure you file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still processing! This is super important - you have to claim every week to get paid for that week. Don't skip weeks thinking you'll catch up later.

•When do I start filing weekly claims? Right after I submit my initial application?
0 coins
Taylor To
•You'll get instructions after you file your initial claim. Usually you can start filing weekly claims the Sunday after you apply.

Alina Rosenthal
•Six weeks?? I really can't wait that long for money. Was there a problem with your claim?

Ella Cofer
•yeah it went into adjudication because my previous employer contested it. total mess

Don't let that scare you - most claims get approved within 2-3 weeks if there are no issues. Retail layoffs are usually pretty straightforward since it's not misconduct related.

•That's reassuring. My manager told me it was just a reduction in force due to slow sales, so hopefully that helps.

•Make sure you get that in writing! Any documentation from your employer about the layoff will help if there are questions later.

Pro tip: when you're filling out the application, be super specific about your reason for separation. 'Laid off due to lack of work' is much better than just saying 'laid off'.

Alina Rosenthal
•Good to know! Should I mention anything about the store's sales being down?
0 coins
Savannah Glover
•You can mention it briefly but keep it factual. Something like 'laid off due to reduced business/lack of work' covers it.

I'm going through the same thing right now! Filed my claim 2 weeks ago and still waiting for approval. The anxiety is killing me.

Alina Rosenthal
•At least I'm not alone in this! Have you been able to reach anyone at Washington ESD to check on your claim status?
0 coins
Felix Grigori
•Nope, every time I call I either get a busy signal or sit on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - saved me so much frustration when I needed to check my claim status.

Another important thing - make sure your address and contact info is correct in the system. I know someone who had delays because Washington ESD was sending mail to an old address.

Alina Rosenthal
•Can I update my address online if I need to?
0 coins
Miguel Harvey
•Yes, you can update most info through your online account. Just make sure to do it as soon as possible if anything changes.

Don't forget about taxes! Unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes taken out or handle it at tax time.

Alina Rosenthal
•I didn't even think about taxes. Should I have them take taxes out automatically?
0 coins
Felicity Bud
•I'd recommend it - 10% federal withholding. Better than getting hit with a big tax bill later.

The whole system seems so complicated for something that should be simple. Why can't they just make it easier?

Max Reyes
•Because it's government bureaucracy at its finest! But once you get through the initial setup it's not too bad.

Alina Rosenthal
•I'm hoping it gets easier once I figure out the first steps.

Make sure you keep records of everything - screenshots of your weekly claims, copies of job applications, all communication with Washington ESD. You never know when you might need to reference something.

Alina Rosenthal
•That's really good advice. Should I print stuff out or is digital okay?

Mikayla Davison
•Digital is fine as long as you have backups. I keep everything in a dedicated folder on my computer.

One more thing - if you work any part-time hours while collecting unemployment, make sure you report them accurately on your weekly claim. Even a few hours can affect your benefit amount.

Alina Rosenthal
•I wasn't planning on working part-time right away, but good to know for later. How much can you earn before it affects benefits?
0 coins
Taylor To
•It depends on your weekly benefit amount, but generally you can earn up to your weekly benefit amount minus $5 before it starts reducing your UI payment.

been unemployed 3 times in the last 5 years and each time the process gets more confusing somehow

Alina Rosenthal
•That doesn't sound encouraging! What's the biggest thing that trips people up?

Adrian Connor
•usually the job search requirements or missing deadlines for weekly claims. set reminders on your phone!

I helped my sister apply last month and the biggest hurdle was getting through when she had questions about her claim. We tried calling for days before someone mentioned that Claimyr service. Seriously saved us so much time and stress.

•Same here! My cousin used it when his claim went into adjudication and he needed to speak with someone urgently.

Quick question - do you need to be actively looking for work immediately or is there a grace period after you file?
0 coins
Finnegan Gunn
•You need to be able and available for work and actively seeking employment from day one. The job search requirements kick in immediately.
0 coins
Alina Rosenthal
•So I should start applying for jobs right away even while waiting for my claim to be approved?
0 coins
Finnegan Gunn
•Absolutely. Keep detailed records of your job search activities - you'll need them for your weekly claims.

The waiting is the worst part honestly. Try to stay positive and don't panic if it takes a couple weeks to hear back.

Alina Rosenthal
•Thanks for the encouragement. I'm trying not to stress but bills don't wait unfortunately.

•I totally get it. See if you can work out payment plans with utilities/landlord if needed while you wait for benefits to start.

Does anyone know if there are different rules for part-time workers? I was only working 25 hours a week when I got laid off.
0 coins
Finnegan Gunn
•As long as you earned enough in your base period and meet the other eligibility requirements, part-time work history shouldn't disqualify you. Your benefit amount will be based on your earnings though.
0 coins
Alina Rosenthal
•What's the base period? I keep seeing that term but don't understand it.
0 coins
Finnegan Gunn
•It's the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file your claim. That's what they use to calculate your benefits.

This thread has been so helpful! I was putting off applying because it seemed so overwhelming but now I feel like I can actually do this.

•Same here! Thanks everyone for all the advice. I'm going to start my application tonight.

•Good luck! Remember to take your time with the application and double-check everything before submitting.

•And don't hesitate to use Claimyr if you need to reach Washington ESD for any reason. Much better than the phone runaround!
